This game isn't for everyone. It feels like a game you'd have on your phone. Too much grinding, battles are repetitive, and too much talking. I want to like it and I'm trying, but it's got a lot of major flaws for me. I want the story to progress through the missions, but the story is told rather than experienced because all the action and battles are nearly identical, just visibly different.

Not just any battle chips, rare ones. And seeing as battle chips are the main weapon people have against ant kind of threat in the MMBN world, and rare battlechips tend to be the strongest or most useful ones (in lore) it would be more like telling American law inforcement that you only joined the terrorist organization because they pronised you a high-end gun and home security.

The difficulty being all over the place and changing without warning was my biggest complaint in the game play. The maps could’ve been really cool, but it was frustrating AF. Also, the “pick up rewards by getting stupid, unimportant dialogue while you search a map needlessly” process was incredibly repetitive and boring. JUST GIVE THEM ALL AT ONCE. Making me go hunt for Flamme for 50 bond fragments is obnoxious.

I agree with the Somniel time sink. It felt like a chore to do all the activities. You tended to want to do them because the resources are so rare. Like the achievement panel for bond fragments is so not enough, especially when you engrave or create bond rings (yes I know about the paralogue trick). The answer? Fishing in the afternoon where you can reliably get 500-1k bond fragments per fish reeled in. But.. it takes like 10 minutes to do all of your fishing, and it resets in between each map you complete. I'm not one that typically complains about game difficulty or anything like that, but this just gives you so many chores to do.

You did a really good job explaining where the game hits and where it misses! I absolutely love the gameplay, but I think the one surprising aspect that I didn't see mentioned were the visuals! I know that, to some, the visuals can look a little plain, and I do agree at times. I think I just personally really enjoyed how Engage actually feels like it was a console game from the ground up, unlike Three Houses where a lot of the visuals still felt stuck in the 3DS design language. I think there's also TONS of potential for the use of those 3D models on various gameplay/story screens, and I honestly hope that we get to see this design language expanded on in a future game. Other than that, I think you hit the nail on the head! Super good step in terms of gameplay, awful step in terms of story. All around good video, keep it up!

I'd like them to experiment and flesh out the "fluffy elements" of Fire Emblem as the series goes on. I think it'd be important to move the series away from being a 1-dimensional series of battles and more into a world worth living in, fighting for, and saving from whatever evil is encroaching on it. Oh and definitely pursue another full-on JRPG in Tokyo Mirage Sessions 2. I want to see more of the Fire Emblem cast show up in the modern world in those stylish forms.

As much a I like to argue about queerness in Fire Emblem. I would argue that this is definitely the wrong take on the games as a whole. Robin’s characterisation is very impressive, but to me, Fire Emblem “Avatars” were never a self insertion, much less a representation of a self. Fire emblem has always show a need to make a protagonist with a story, and I feel that this video is exactly the take that make people think that avatars have no personality. Just because your character isn’t given to you already tied in a pretty box (by that I mean characters that can’t be altered in any way like Marth, Sigurd, Eliwood, etc), doesn’t mean they weren’t meant to play that role. The only choice that FE developers reeaaaaaally give you is to either look female or male. However, that is an illusion of choice. The people you are able to date and the things you are able to wear, should be seen in the eyes of the character, not from the eyes of the player. They have specific (if perhaps subtle to the inattentive eye) personalities and likings, ways of answering and ways of acting; even if you can “choose” what to say. So, as much as I like the idea of a complaining of the queerness in the games. The protagonist is the worst possible thing to argue against for this saga of games. The wrong thing to “attack” if you will. That without calling out any cultural importance of queerness in Japan and other countries. Edit: You are right. Rosado would look cool af in a pegasus, goddamn.

the story sucks so bad, i really dont have a high bar when it comes to stories, for example im already more than happy with something simple like shadow dragon or blazing blade, but this aint it, its so boring. also gameplay wise i dont like the modern hub like area, this aint monster hunter, i just want to go from one stage to the next with zero downtime in between, the older games were so much better in this regard. i also dont like leveling everything up and all the grinding, the game has shifted into something completely different than what it used to be. the older games were all about strategy, now its all about wasting time and level grinding, this has nothing to do with what fire emblem used to be.

as someone who have played every other entry on fire emblem series (you) which one from switch you recommend for someone willing to try but indecisive about which one?

If the character design and personalities weren't ao wack, I would've given this game a chance. I just worry that I will cringe too hard that the gameplay will feel less appealing

To be honest, I am surprised you are labeling this as a game you would not recommend as your first fire emblem game. Really though, I honestly feel like this game is much more built to be beginner friendly if taking into consideration that the story is far less complex, warranting a much more streamlined experience that doesn't require a 300 hour investment into games like Three Houses. There's also no instant way to gain a copy of awakening with ease without shipping a used copy to your doorstep or hunting for the game at a used game store. Looking at it from the perspective of what's more easily available, three houses has much more of a learning curve, and I was experiencing that game as someone who played a decent amount of older titles. Fire Emblem Engage is more simple on paper with convenient guides introducing you to each emblem little by little; its just really grindy as you say if they care about bond rings, forging weapons, collecting support conversations, upgrading emblem weapons, unlocking wake up events. The story is also perfect for beginners, because if you are a first time player you may actually enjoy the melodrama of it all. So, I have to respectfully disagree with you on that.

I will say the issue for the outfits part is probably because of character models they made which is what I would put down as "Masculine build" and "Feminine build" models. Masculine having more broad shoulders, taller builds, and etc while the feminine ones are more sleak, slim, and not as bulky looking as the masculine models. They probably let Rosado is able to wear the feminine clothes because they gave him one of the feminine models builds to use as we do not see him wearing any of the boys clothes. If they were to let the male MC wear the feminine clothes or vice versa, the modelers would have to probably make entire new molds for the characters to wear them which might have taken more time for them to do and would probably cost the company more money to probably make FOUR sets/ modeled outfits compared to only doing two sets. (I am trying to say this from a model makers perspective, and I apologize if any words used was offensive.) (Which in all honesty for me, for character customization you either dont do it or your add in as much customization as you can to the character for outfit options, height, build, chest, hair, eyes, and etc. Not just to sticking to only customizing the characters name and other minor stuff like dialouge options and that. Phantasy Star Online Two being one of my sort of favorite examples for cutsomization)

honestly this I feel hits the issue right on the head, though I do think it's perhaps even worse than just this. character customization even at it's most intricate has as far as I'm aware never had a skin color option which also limits the ways in which players can express themselves. Also some of the queer women in the games are also just so uncomfortable and awful, like how in Fates Soleil is just so obviously written by straight men, she just flirts with any girl she comes across even if those women do not feel comfortable and is just so completely fetishized that her attraction to women becomes her defining characteristic

tbh i'll take no paired endings over the game just auto-picking them like in 3h, but it wouldn't be hard to just add dialogue-less s supports, like the a+ supports were in fates

I own the game. I want to like it. However, there's a lot of things in the game that turn me off from playing it. Like the character designs, the anime intro, the rock music, uninteresting story etc. It just feels weaker than three houses in almost every way.

I think this is missing a lot of cultural context from Japan and its history/relationship with queerness and imposing western ideals of queerness. Like, obviously Japan still has some growing pains, but it'd make more sense explaining why a Japanese game isn't shining gloriously as a standard of ideal of queer rep in the eyes of your typical queer westerner. Why are there no manly women or boyish girls? Because girls are expected to conform to traditional femininity (even if in practice not all do), and there's been a long history of effeminate boys in East Asia. Why are there no characters with they/them pronouns? In Japanese, pronouns aren't gendered the same way ours are. There's plenty of RUclips videos going over Japanese pronouns so I'd recommend watching those for further insight. The video came out pretty recently, but I'd recommend giving Moon Channel's most recent video about the divisive trans rep in Japanese video games a watch. It further gives insight on the cultural context of trans expression in Japan and why it's not always on the same page as the West. Spoiler Alert: "Wow, a collectivist culture that places emphasis on conformity made a game with different ideals of queerness than the ones I am accustomed to, who would've thunk it?"
