Tear down and cleaning the Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP.
all they had to do was make the top screen detachable with a clip ,so annoying that ribbon cable
I will never understand why they changed to a glossy top shell on the DSi XL instead of the classic look of the normal DSi. It looks so much better than the xl
Hello! Thank you for making this video. I recently bought a used DSi XL myself which has a fairly worn shell. Reading through the comments I've seen that you found the new shell on aliexpress, and I was wondering what the quality of the plastic/fitment is like? If you're happy with the quality would you perhaps be able to guide me towards a vendor? I've read that some of the shells are not of a very high quality. Thanks! :)
Hi! I see the offer was down for some time but now it is back again www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002925069431.html?spm=a2g0o.order_detail.order_detail_item.3.613543ceihzOuV&gatewayAdapt=glo2pol . Like I said in the video, I'm very happy with the quality... so unless something changed in the past year, then I think you could go with that one. I've read some comments in other offers on ali and mostly people are not happy about printings that sometimes have some skewing and misalignments, but I would expect plastics to be fine in general. In the end of a day it's always a little bit of a lottery to buy on ali 😃
@@MuchbarHandiworks Thank you for your reply! I'm looking out for a white shell which is unfortunately sold out on aliexpress, so I'll just be patient! When the time comes to do the shell swap I'll definitely come back to this video for some pointers 🙌
Bottom screen is yellowed(
Wow this process looks wild So much more complex than the Ds Lite
Hey man did you force the replacement shell tight or did the process feel smooth to you at the end result?
Hi! I didn't struggle too much with it. Probably... the parts that required the most force to use were the covers for an upper screen... but it wasn't too bad. I don't really remember how hard it was to take apart the top of og shell, but I'd say in both cases it was comparatively the same.
Hi! I have been watching this video while swapping my dsi xl shell and I managed to do something wrong. I have been crying for almost 3 hours now trying to fix it but I don’t know whats wrong and everything was fine before i started. Please, can I send it to you? I can pay whatever price. I don’t want to buy a new one because this ds have a sentimental value to me
Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately I usually don't do repair service. Unless you're from Poland shipping costs, possible duty pay and time itself would make it rather too much of hassle. If I were in your shoes I'd look for some repair shops in your country. Also, check out facebook groups or reddit, maybe you could find there some local modder or repair guy who works with retro consolses.
I wish I could find clear shell for the xl model
Yeah, I'd love one too, but haven't seen any yet
Good video, but What is this black tape for? 7:12
This black tape is made of spongy material. It gives some minor protection from impact and fills gap between shell and screen
Hey nice video, how is the new replacement shell? Did you have any problems after use?
Hi! Thank you! I haven't encountered any issue till now, so I'm still very happy with this shell :D
Hi friend do you have link for screen replacements? Thanks
Hey! I usually buy parts on aliexpress. Here is offer I've taken for this video: www.aliexpress.us/item/1005004443610034.html?gatewayAdapt=4itemAdapt
hello i have a similar dsi condition wise but im having a hard time finding a shell can you let me know where you got your shell from and possibly send a link? thanks in advance
Hi! I bought it on aliexpress, but I see that offer I`ve taken is no longer available. pl.aliexpress.com/item/1005002925069431.html?spm=a2g0o.order_detail.order_detail_item.3.735743ce09dZeN&gatewayAdapt=glo2pol If you type "ndsixl shell complete" in ali search bar, you will find offers of the same shell.
@@MuchbarHandiworks thank you so much the shells as well as the screens particularly the top one are hard to come by for some reason
This is such a helpful video. Few questions... Is the headphone jack working fine still today? 2nd If we add USB C in side as shown (I liked this one because it keeps the original one and adds type c)... so I want to know if we add usb type C will we be able to attach headphones to that as well?
Thank you @BooksTinn 😄 1. Audio jack works fine, never had problem with it. 2. About audio through USB C. I've thought about it while making this video, but I found it not to be an option. The thing is that most (if not all) USB C headphones has embedded digital-analog audio converter inside them, so the input has to be digital signal. GBA obviously delivers only analog signal. Frankly, I've dropped this idea pretty early, so I don't have much of an idea what can be done about it. Only thing that comes to my mind is to install analog-digital audio converter, however I don't know where to get such thing or even if it exists. Maybe you could rip one out from microphone ADC adapter, and maybe that adapter would work. But then, even if you find such adapter, I doubt you could fit it in GBASP shell.
Hey... I added a headphone jack exactly as shown but My screen got way dimmer... Its like all the current (or voltage) is taken by headphone jack... please help.. As soon as I disconnected my headphone jack screen lighted normally. I am using an AGS 101 model.
@@BooksTinn Hi, so you have og ags-101 and the only mod is the headphone jack, right? And headphones are working with this device nonetheless? Well, first thing is to check that if you soldered ground wire from jack to audio ground (see schematics at 6:27). Audio and common ground are separated, so all different signals (audio, video, and all the other on the PCB) won't interfere with each other. Also make sure you haven't shorted any trace by mistake. Other than that... I can imagine 101 screens might not get enough power once you plugged in headphones, but that doesn't makes sense since built-in speaker shall drew more power than headphones. But! there is still chance you got there a voltage division effect. I would do the following: 1. see what happens when you go with max output on built-in speaker. 2. get (if you don't have it) GBA to audio jack adapter and see if the problem appears. in either case if is you see screen is dimmed that means there is some component that is not working properly. I would guess something drastically heats up, or some resistor, coil or IC has much more resistance than it should. There is also a chance that your battery is dying and has voltage drop below of what's expected, so you may also check how long you can run within single power cycle... maybe replacing battery would help. Anyway, without having the device in my hands I cannot tell you much more :/
I jak lepiej chodził po wymianie tej pasty ?
Dużo ciszej, to napewno.
To dobry znak.
Good repair video, thanks.
Just take your dsi and skip it on a sidewalk a couple times to get the same look like you skip a stone in water
That has to be the worst condition shell I’ve seen for the dsi xl
It's a shame it's a green one too and not one of the more common ones.
Nice job!
Hi Much, thank you for showing us these repairs step by step. Was wondering how the 50k pot is holding up today on that first DS you repaired? I have the same issue with my DS, pot came off, I’ve never soldered on a board before, just on guitars. Can you please send me the link for the pot you used? Can you please also tell me what that fluid is that you poured over the vr2 before soldering the pot? Lastly, could you please tell me what you applied to the q-tip to clean up the remaining liquid? Was it just Isopropyl alcohol? If so, would 91% isopropyl alcohol work fine?
Hello Ivan. The ds with replaced trimpot works fine. You know, once I've regulated it I haven't touch that trimmer anymore, so there was not much chance to damage it. If you haven't soldered on PCB, well, you need to know you would need a some fine or edged tip on your soldering iron. Temperature control is also a nice thing. I have all-in-one rework station with iron and hot-air. VR2 trimpot is SMD 2x2 50K (2mm length and width). You can see in the video in one cut there are all pads present and on the other one there is one missing. That's because I tried first to install 3x3 trimmer and I obviously failed. Then I destroyed the remaining pads anyway :D That yellowish goo is flux and the green goo is UV curable solder mask. For cleaning I used isopropyl alcohol for electronics (99,5%). 91% doesn't sound right, it is contaminated with most likely water. On the other hand I really doubt that amount of water would do any damage. Just make sure it's dry before booting your ds up. pl.aliexpress.com/item/1005003338213189.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.208.21ef1c24KGYwLc&gatewayAdapt=glo2pol
@@MuchbarHandiworks Thank you so much for getting back to me and for posting a link to the pots as well. The information you’ve given me is very helpful. Fortunately I was able to find a retro game store here in my city that repairs DS’s. I informed them of my diagnosis and explained to them it was most likely the trim pot, fortunately they have some replacement pots in stock to use for my DS. They should be able to replace it for me for $40. As much fun as this looks to do by myself, I would much rather have the peace of mind and just pay them the $40! I will pass them along your information from this comment section to better aid them. Thank you again Much!!
@@ivanxva Hmm, by $ you mean USD?.. I think you could get fully functional DSL on ebay for something around 50$. There is also and option to get some dsl with broken screens and replace the motherboard. Generally when ds is turned on and it blips the power led and then shuts down, it means some peripheral is failing and it's usually either of displays. If I were you, I'd lurk ebay first. On the other hand if you got bad luck you'd end up with two broken units :/
@@MuchbarHandiworks yes USD. You won’t believe it but I just managed to buy a fully functional mint condition DS Lite with games and case for $50 today from somebody locally on Facebook Marketplace! Crazy!!!
@@ivanxva Great! That's what I was talking about!
It should be noted this can cause a variant of “Berry Glitch”
I didn't know. Thanks :D
Saw another guy opening the case using a knife, but then you even use heat to not break anything and mold it back to its original form: master. Great vid, man. Will be cleaning my cousin's Xbox using it.
why are you going through all this effort to put a usbc port in the side when it's so easy to replace the existing proprietary charging port with a usbc port?
Well, that's a good question. Now I see there are some, but when I was doing this mod there was none dedicated usb c mods on market... I mean shops were out of stock or shipping aboard would cost something like 20 bucks. Here I did mod for both usb c and audio for something... I guess about 2$. In case of replacing proprietary port with some random usb c port... Even if I found fitting one, I would still need to figure out adding resistor and filling the gap, so I do not expect that would require any less effort. But, in the end I'm just not a fan of stripping any functions from devices I work on, I prefer adding them :)
Good job👍
I was trying to learn, but I fell asleep because this is very asmr.

Well done!
Can you send a link to all of the resources you used? I want to make this myself as well.
I've added list of supplies at the bottom of description. Not much links, because I buy a lot of stuff at local electronic and hobby stores. Btw the IPS screen drains more power than original one and it impacts the work of speaker. There is this pop when you turn on the console and speaker is humming a little all the time... It's not much worse in comparison to unmodded device but if you want to get rid off this effect there are things like this: www.zedlabz.com/products/noise-filter-for-game-boy-advance-sp-power-cleaner-flex-ribbon-cable-nintendo-gba-sp-easy-install-capacitor-mod-for-ips-screen-audio-noise-reduction-zedlabz?variant=38030866514091
Don’t you find having the cable on my side uncomfortable to hold the gameboy?
@@fallvec1423 Actually no. USB plug goes between index and middle finger and does not bother me at all, even when playing games that utilizes LR buttons.
great video, glad to see new life breathed into a worn out console :)
Now this is a tutorial I will gladly follow from now on to modify GBCs from now on.
