Dr. Polozola demonstrates his preferred method of pruning and shaping blackberries utilizing the TPUPS (Trellised Production Using Primocane Suppression) method. Removal of spent floricanes should be completed within a couple of weeks after harvest concludes. Training the primocanes before the canes turn woody can assist in the overall shaping and trellising process.

    I’d love to know why you train them this way? Surely you’d get less berries with less shoots?

    • @lsuagcentercentralregion3794
      @lsuagcentercentralregion3794 5 дней назад

      @FairleyTrashed Good question! By keeping the primocanes suppressed, the plants focus all of the energy and resources toward fruit production. It also minimizes fruit loss due to disease. And, overall, the plants experience less disease pressure because the lower foliage has been removed. And on thorned varieties, having the plants pruned up makes it easier to harvest and not get into all of the thorns.

    • @FairleyTrashed
      @FairleyTrashed 5 дней назад

      @@lsuagcentercentralregion3794 that makes sense thanks. I’m growing a row of berries (3 different raspberries, thornless blackberry and a Youngberry) in big grow bags. They are coming into their second year (Australia, currently spring) I’ve just let them do whatever and they are very bushy. I don’t have a trellis system (will try and install for next season). Do you recommend that I prune back the primocanes in each bag? If so by how much?

  • @mattj3175
    @mattj3175 Месяц назад

    Is it too late in the season to start training/pruning my blackberries? Is the method the same for primo and floricane bearing blackberries?

    • @lsuagcentercentralregion3794
      @lsuagcentercentralregion3794 Месяц назад

      @matt3175 I spoke with Dr. Polozola and he said it really depends on what your plants look like now. They would only have 6-8 weeks of growing prior to going into dormancy. The other factor would be which variety you are growing and how vigorous they are. As for the method being the same in primo and floricane bearing blackberries, we have only trialed the floricane varieties. We are going to get some primocane varieties to trial next, but we do not have any concrete results as of yet.

    • @mattj3175
      @mattj3175 17 дней назад

      @@lsuagcentercentralregion3794 Thank you for replying! I have both primo and floricane: Ouchita, Natchez, Osage, Ponca, PrimeArk Freedom, Stark Black Gem, Triple Crown, and Arapaho. All very vigorous except for Arapaho. I'll be eagerly awaiting the results of your primocane trials!

    • @mattj3175
      @mattj3175 17 дней назад

      @@lsuagcentercentralregion3794can you tell me at what point in the season do you stop suppressing the primocane growth?

    • @lsuagcentercentralregion3794
      @lsuagcentercentralregion3794 5 дней назад

      @@mattj3175 Once you start noticing the fruit production slow down and the floricanes start to fade, you can begin allowing primocanes to grow. Now, after you have selected your two primocanes to train, continue suppressing the additional primocanes that start to grow. Occasionally, you may need to allow a 3rd primocane to grow up if you find the need to replace one of two already selected.

    pH as a guide for liming? let me see...what contributes to a higher pH if you want one? magnesium raises soil pH 1.6 times more than calcium, potassium 2x more, and sodium, 4x more. how your pH is constructed is the issue. as you can see, you can have a high pH soil but still lack calcium because the soil has high magnesium, K, and/or sodium. in the end, the need for calcium should be dictated by the nutritional requirement of the crop, even as we recognize that, in the practice so-called soil-mineral balancing, the calcium:magnesium ratio is a concern, not for nutrition, but for how tight or loose you want your soil - the higher the magnesium, the tighter the soil. you can trial that in small plots...i suggest you look for the video of "Bryan McLeod soil understanding the construction of pH". this is not to belittle the value of this video (the discussion here may be appropriate for the local conditions they face) but to offer an alternative viewpoint...blessings to all

Fortunately she had no difficulty being allowed to attend Olds College in Canada.
