When can you do one w drain to curb.
Working on new content now!
PVC Schedule 40 vs. PVC DWV pipe for underground gutter drain with 4-8" of gravel (flower beds) but no vehicle traffic (only foot)? Thanks for posting!
If you can I always recommend schedule 40 for the PVC side of things. Its just so tough. But for your situation SDR 35 would be a great choice as well. I would get which ever one was cheaper.
Excellent explanation, thanks for sharing
You are welcome!
mate, how many inches wide from wheel ends ? So as i understood the size of the bed is 80 inches?
I believe it is 7ft
Easy installation of a maintenance nightmare 😂
You have no idea what you are talking about. Thanks for the click and watch time!
How come you didn't use any fabric for around the rock and pipe?
Soil separation fabric is only needed with perforated pipes, typically found on french drains where excess subsurface water is an issue. This system is correct - it’s taking surface sheet water and getting it away from the foundation.
^
Nice soft soil
So nice
I’m prepping to do the same thing with sdr 35 pipe. It’s easy material to get for me. Thanks for making videos like this for us white sneaker wearing middle aged dads lol 👊
No problem 👍Thanks and good luck!
Great video and perfect explanation. I’ve been looking everywhere on RUclips for some tips on how to install, dig and where to put stone and I just want to say thank you!!! Time to get started.
Great to hear! You are welcome! good luck!
You can get a dead straight line with a piece of string between two sticks right on the ground, and spray over it with the turf spray paint sold at Home Depot. Did it this week and it works so much better than eyeballing.
100% Setting up a string is the best way to do it. thanks
Very nice job. Will that PVC 6 inch to 4 inch reducer that is exposed to daylight will that last at least 10 years or will that get brittle and break within 5 years??? Would double wall corrugated pipe be better for locations that have 10 inches of frost.
Thank you! I think you will get discoloration with direct sunlight. This seems to be shaded well so it should have a very long lifespan for the customer. I would check out the french drain man on RUclips for drainage in an area that has a freeze and thaw period.
Excellent video! 🙏 Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Is that SDR 35 pipe? Great job and thanks
Yes, it is Thanks!
The French man doesn't recommend French drains starting and then dumping into a catch basin tied together with a surface water system? He likes to keep them separate but together. Do you agree?
absolutely.
I'll be running a drain pipe for backyard water, parallel with my concrete driveway, about 1.5ft distance from the driveway. Occasionally someone in my household will "miss" the driveway and might roll a vehicle over the ground above the pipe. Because of that possibility, maybe I should spend more for stronger schedule 40 pipe, in order to avoid pipe collapse due to vehicle weight?
Oh yeah go schedule 40 for sure.
Thanks!
thanks very helpful
You're welcome!
You ever have any issues with shingle asphalt plugging up?
Not with regular maintenance
Getting ready to redo my yard from a 50 year old system. Can you just backfill with dirt? No gravel required?
not sure what you mean? thanks
I would like to see the type of gutter that is attached to the house 5:31
round 5"
Is the pvc that you run have drilled holes in the bottom or is that not needed for these systems?
No this is a solid enclosed system.
Have you ever had your dovetail hit the ground? It looks like it's low - very close to the ground.
when its hooked up the front of the trailer sits about 4 inches lower bringing the back up. But i have definitely raked it on a few slopes.
Nicely done. Can I install this threaded Tee fitting against the building? Or does it have to be horizontal in the ground?
I recommend installing it as far up stream as possible.
Interested in a video to explain installation of French drain . Do you put double corrugated pipes in yours or just one? Also gravel all along the pipes or just at the end? Last question what piece goes at the end of the corrugated pipe?
I think I have one of those videos that goes really in depth. And I use a end cap.
for your clean outs you can use a wye pipe instead
Thats the better way to go. That way your clean-out method can go in seamlessly. thanks
Nice work. When the clean out is on a 90, can you get a hose around that bend? Or use a sweep instead?
Sweep preffered. Never had a problem with these though.
Outstaiding Video. It contained just the "how to" facts on how to install the drain. Did not try to be a comedian or try to be funny with a lot of silly stuff. I really enjoyed watching and I think that I learned enough to complete my project. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge . I saved this video in order to refer back to it when I do the project.
Thank you so much, This makes me happy.
I wonder how much pitch you would have left after installing a riser on the popup. I think that should be your final measurement. The hose test would be a good idea.
I hate pop-ups, but thats a good question. I usually just water test everything and see the action.
Planning my project. I’m draining a yard (not real big) and one gutter from the house, all into a 4 inch pipe. Will that same pop up on the end allow that amount of water to drain? Seems like (of course) you need to provide >= drainage for the water you’re collecting.
Best thing to do is daylight the pipe. forget the pop-up if possible.
Great video. I had a similar system installed but the landscaper didn’t drill a hole at the 90, so we have standing water in the pipe. I have to dig them up and drill a hole to let the water run out. My question, is the stone enough to keep debris out or would you recommend a sock or sleeve over the drilled hole?
Gravel seems to be enough. But a nice drainage fabric wouldn't hurt.
Having geo textile fabric can’t hurt but generally isn’t necessary at the end of the line like this video. At that termination point, the water pressure and velocity will be pushing out any minimal shmutz that gets in that drain hole. It really depends on your soil. If you have clay (like I do), then yes - dig it up and create a dry well and line it then fill with gravel. If your soil drains, don’t bother - just remove the popup or grate at the discharge point and drill a hole easy peazy. If your lawn is normally dry within 48 hours after rain or irrigation, your soil drains.
I like to put my cleanout at the downspout. basically put a Wye and connect it and put a strainer inside and they can stick their hand in to take out leaves
sweet, I like it.
Your video is outstanding!! This customer is extremely lucky to have you doing this installation project!!
Thank you very much!
I’ve watched both your gutter drain videos. It took me to the end of this one to realize that a “pop up” is what lets the water escape the pipe once it’s fool! 🤦♂️
Thanks
Keep pushing sir! I have a small business similar to yours in Charleston!
Awesome man thanks so much.
Great video, thank you! One issue though. Where is your PPE? I guess it's a "live free or die" thing. 😁
I usually where sunglasses. What other PPE do you suggest? haha maybe nitrite gloves if you are messy.
@@BradfordOutdoor remember, safety first. Work gloves must be on for digging, especially by hands, and sawing. Stupidity lessons are usually learned hard way. I love dyi. I do most of my house improvements and maintenance myself. But I'm also a guitar player. You wouldn't believe how many times I injured my fingers before I started wearing my work gloves. I couldn't play my guitar for weeks and even months one time. I hope it helps to get my ppe point. 🙂
Thank you
You're welcome
If I have a 20’ long area of low ground that pools water and I put in catch basin drains, how far apart should I space them? I have to T them off or Y them into a main drain pipe toward a sloping drain line that runs toward the the top of a hill before dumping. How low should the basin sit when the grate cover is in it? Thanks.
Tough question to answer. I would have to see it to give my professional opinion.
For the instance where you just " burrito wrap " the rock , ( no pipe in trench), even though you have 1 % slope, what transports the water out of low end of Trench? Doesn't it just flow through water, then down to ground and soak In? Seems as pipe would be the true conduit. If pipe is not necessary, then you'd waste a lot of money on it. Not being negative, just inquisitive.
Not sure what you mean? The example I gave was just to Show you that even without a pipe the french drain system could function. Although not optimally. I have never installed a system without pipe. But it could be done. You just need to get creative. If I had a french drain without pipe I would still install a solid pipe on the lowest end of the burrito wrap to grab the water up and take it away. I don't recall this video but Maybe the point I was making was you could have a burrito wrap under the ground with no discharge. If it was deep enough it would really just be a big dry-well. Idk interesting comment you got my brain running. Thanks bro!
Great job 👍. I was wondering why where you have the clean out...Using a catch basin to catch shingle gravel...I plan on putting a catch basin pretty much where you have the clean out ...And a leaf debris filter on downspout...
The way this particular system is set up There is not catch basin which we know is optimal. I knew that when I installed this. Where people run into problems is when the system is set on flat grade. With this system we installed a clean out cap so that you can access the system with a hose, flush it all to the bottom of the system and clean it out there. I Would recommend a leaf filter from the French Drain Man. I have used them recently. They rock.
How could that clean out possibly protect your system from roof gravel any where close to what a catch basin could do? Once the gravel gets past that clean out you're screwed and your system will get filled up then clogged up, no?
Well is seems you do not understand what the difference is between a clean-out and a catch basin. See a catch basin is both a "catch basin" and a clean-out where a clean-out is just an access point to clean-out the system. This still beats not having any access point what so ever which is what I see every day. This system will be easy to maintain. Open the cap, flush with a hose, take the pop-up off and clean it out. I'm not arguing a catch basin would have been better, but sometimes you need to work with a customers budget and this particular customer did not like the look of a catch basin. So this is what they got and no problems so far! Thanks bruh.
Awesome showing. Much appreciated!!!
Thanks for watching!
so down south you use no. 4 granite. what is the preferred stone for us in the north east? cost wise? GREAT VIDEO!
Check out French drain man. Pretty sure it’s going to be a 1” round rock. Much easier to get up there. Thanks!
You don't have to deal with a frost line, do you?
Absolutely not!
do you have to use 4" pipe or can you go with a smaller diameter if house is 1200sf? Thanks
I have seen 3” used at a minimum! This helps a lot with generating pressure over shorter runs. Wouldn’t do anymore that a single downspout on it!
Popups suk, water can't push dirt & debris up a 90°, it will fill with dirt, should have put a T with a pipe going down into the gravel instead of a 90.
Wrong about that, it’s your installation. Sorry bubba. Only reason they fail is turf growing over them and flat pipe.
The minute he say he shop at Ace I click thumb down and back. I can’t take anyone shop at a store smaller than my garage seriously. That’s like saying u shops at dollar general for your hardware
Goober, nothing wrong with mentioning ace since it’s a video targeted for DIY people. Stop acting like the trash you buy at Home Depot/Lowe’s is any better. LOL
Thanks LowCountry.. I just built my 5th French Drain on my property last week. I find many people call "Trench Drains" French Drains. My French Drain DIY: (there are a couple videos on my channel) I dig a 4 ft deep hole, about 18" round. (In clay per Virginia). I then take a 10 ft long 2" diameter PVC pipe, and start pounding it into the bottom center of my hole. At first I climb on a ladder as the pipe is so high, and swing a sledgehammer. Eventually.. long story short, I am 4 ft deep on my first hole, and the pvc is 7 ft under that hole, a total of 11 ft or so. That is where I hit white gold in my town. Pure sand. Once I hit that, I do a couple last pulls of the hole and cut the pipe so it is 3" - 4" higher than my bottom of the main hole. I cover the PVC with a cap temporarily, and pour in play sand to stabilize the pipe and seal it up. REMOVE YOUR CAP!! Then lay my fabric as Lowcountry said.. a very special fabric.. a non-woven fabric. Criss cross, spike the edges down before you pour your smooth river stone in, so the edges of the fabric don't get pulled into the hole. I pour in 3-4 bags of rocks. Then fold the fabric over the top round robin style, no holes.. I sprinkle a half bag of sand over the fabric for good measure, then pour in a bag or two of rocks to finish it off. *Videos on my channel.
Outstanding! Thanks for watching boss
I used hdpe pipes connected them to these small basins( not really basin) connected using PVC tape and adhesive.all leading to an emitter until I can get a core drill then I'll drill under the sidewalk to the street
Awesome. Love to hear it thanks for commenting
Thanks for the helpful video, and appreciate your easy going personality
My pleasure!
Have a ton of standing water on my patio when it rains, the backyard slopes towards the house. French drain will help, need to direct water to where a Camphor tree stump used to be.
So many different solutions to different problems! Thanks for commenting
