Highly modified Cessna 170B visits the Calhan Colorado Airport in search of adventure!

Dave and Mary decided to visit Calhan in search of local attractions. They left their sweet 1954 Cessna 170B with 180hp engine and constant speed prop at the South end of the runway while they took off on foot. The afternoon pop up thunderstorms looked bad enough they decided to depart while the departing was good. From 1987 to 2002 I owned a Cessna 170B, with the same mods as this one, plus a ...

I managed to catch up with the drivers of this sweet 1976 Cessna 182P Skylane while they were stretching their legs and checking out our runway. After chatting for a few minutes, they opted for a few takeoffs and landings on our sweet AvTurf runway. Their takeoff runs were between 900-1150 feet. Impressive at 6450'msl!!
Robinson R-44 visits the Calhan Colorado Airport for some practice on Runway 17, on the turf.

This R-44 has been giving instruction in the area for a minute, but I had been unable to catch any video of it operating at Calhan until today. I was in the hangar working on the airport tractor, when I heard a 5 mile call from the Robby. So I got the camera gear and aviation radio out and hurried over to the West side of the runway to catch the action. The pilot brought it to a hover in front ...

Pilatus PC-12 dirt strip pilot check out at Calhan Colorado Airport on the last day of January 2022
1 second is all it takes. One moment is routine, normal (0:10), and the next, is chaos, and impending death (0:11). Don't take life for granted, guys.
You have to miss two key checklist items for this to happen. First was the failure to visually confirm the gust locks were removed during preflight. The second was the failure to confirm free movement of all control surfaces on run up. They all died for nothing.
what's the aircraft registration number? I going to search information on this accident... the video look FAF
Do a search in Canada, using the aircraft type and date in the video.
Of you look at the rudder closely there is no movement in it at all
Looks like it was a beautiful day for flying! Keep em coming Jay
Takeoff checklists exists for a reason. THIS is it.
The “180” is one my favorite planes.
Saturday 6th at Chaparral
Love the 180. Paint job should be illegal....
Kubota guy, eh?
@@JSBIRD69 Lol. Yeah orange with a little bit of blue. Green and yellow don't even look good on tractors. (Just teasing) Love the plane.
Cools
Good looking bird!!😊
Yes sir, it's a fine looking bird!!
No alarm when taking off for not removing that control lock????
Display day showboating kills many.
The horror in that cockpit 😮
Train and keep training until you make a mistake and then train why you made that mistake
The most legendary F-14 pilot Dale Snodgrass died this exact same way in 2021 at 72 years of age. He was in a hurry and forgot to remove the flight control lock for the yoke in his own private GA-plane resulting in a steep climb immediately after take-off followed by a wing-stall to the left at maybe 100ft of altitude with a fatal outcome as result. The crash is on video and posted to youtube.
balls
This is the same reason that the prototype B17 was destroyed in 1935[?] Arrogant test pilots with a 'don't tell me what to do" attitude did not check that all flight controls had full & free movement just prior to advancing throttles to full power for take off. That B17 followed essentially the same flight profile as this, with the same outcome.
My instructor taught me to fly the basics -C152, 172, etc. He pounded it into my head to always dip my pointer into the fuel to check the level. (Obviously according to weight limits.)
That is one thing i do not want when I die.... To see the end coming, knowing you have literally seconds before you life is snuffed out and there is NOTHING you can do about it. I'll just go in my sleep thanks.
if God wanted man to fly he would have given us feathers
Apparently aircraft were made by Satan then. Or it's simply a sin to build planes. :/
Wow. Most convincing CGI I've seen.
Nice video, thanks for putting it up. Mary and Mr. Mary were glad to meet you!
Thanks! The video description has been edited to reflect our introduction. Nice to meet you both!
This is what killed Dale Snodgrass.. one of the most experienced F-14 pilots in history.. when flying a single engine Cessna. Controls free and correct.. every time.
Dale Snodgrass is a perfect example of when people become complacent, think they know everything, and just because they are a so-called "expert" on one piece of equipment they think they are an expert on all related equipment. This is the exact problem I have found in the shipping industry.
Wow. The deadpan commentary makes it even worse.
I know that dude! You need to come up here and video breakfast!
I'd like to do that Moose. If I can catch a ride up there, I'd be happy to record the breakfast event.
I’ll come get ya, or we can sucker Todd into coming. Either way you’ll be flying in a RANS🤠
Doh
After the checklist items and engine run up, right before EVERY flight, killer items checklist: Fuel, Flaps, Trim, Transponder on standby, cycle the control surfaces, then get your clearance.
This is literally why we have checklists.
Plane crashes. Guy: Hm.
Pilot error leads to presentation of Darwin Award to the next-of-kin.
If Dale Snodgrass can get killed by a forgotten gust lock, so can anybody.
Is that a problem?
What an idiot. That’s called chlorinating the gene pool right there.
This happened to a C-141 before. Crew tried to abort the landing but severely overreacted. It turned out that thinking the end of the runway was in sight was just an optical illusion.
In Taxi or Take Off checks there is always 'Check full and free movement, of the flying controls . . . they obviously didn't.
I guess that’s kinda what happened to the University Of Evansville basketball team in 1977. They didn’t remove the gust locks and the weight wasn’t loaded right.
They won't do that again.
This is absolutely horrible
Bank angle check
The elevator is centered in the video. I think a load broke free and the weight was shifted to the tail. And no flaps used?
My great Uncle was a crew chief on the same exact aircraft during the Vietnam war. One day he was flying with a crew transporting vietnamese civilians over south Vietnam and it sadly was shot down. They were at low altitute and had just taken off. Before they were shot down the report says one of the engines failed, and they attempted to turn around back to the airfield. Aboard were 9 americans and 6 vietnamese. Happened in May of '64. He was 22 and engaged. He was my inspiration to go into the service, and I will always try my best to tell people his story.
Cool story.
Were they shot down, or did they crash due to the engine failure. Could you clarify please ?Thanks.
I used to think this video was fake given just how crazy it actually is
Pretty sure the guy filming, his son was in the plane..
All over for sure bub!
"I cannot believe it !" The guy sounds like John McEnroe.
It almost looked like a suicide! It's hard to imagine a failure that severe.
Was the pilot OK?
I reckon that depends on your definition of 'OK'.
Sad. Some confusion. This lock system requires the control surfaces to pass neutral deflection at some point before the individual lock pins engage. So the system can be locked but still allow partial deflection of the control surface. Tragically, in this case for the elevator, the surface was not actually locked in place until after the departure from the runway. I presume, because the pilot attempted to push the yoke forward as the plane entered a steep climb, which allowed the elevator lock pin to engage. Also, this aircraft was operating as an experimental aircraft. As such it was fitted with turbine engines and a modified throttle control. This modified throttle control invalidated the typical Caribou throttle stop due to an engaged gust lock system. In this case, there was enough throttle authority to achieve flight in spite of the gust lock system being locked.
I feel like I intuitively understood this despite just watching only a few hrs of yotube videos on planes/controls because extra safe is how I would engineer any machine especially a plane. It does seem like a wonky misdesign. What is a caribou throttle? I find it interesting that a large ruminant would be a name on a plane control.
Flight controls check... nope!
