Mini Notebook Organizers Overview
I just wanted a notebook organizer that was in my pocket that also worked as a wallet. Therefore, I started to create my own series of mini notebook organizers, and I called them Architect Mini. I am showing my one-year's worth of creations and their advantages and flaws.
As it turns out, I could not settle for just one design - each iteration has led me to making the next one better than last one.

Alpha Card Holder version 1.0 Overview
I love seeing your sketches and design iterations! Your stuff is crisp and beautiful!
Thank you. Sketching saves time and material. I can make 10 iterations in one sitting, making decisions in the moment. When I look back at them days, weeks and even months later, they spark some more ideas. I am communicating with my past thinking and recording my present thinking. I put labels and hidden lines to communicate intent as if I would not remember them years later. Just an efficient and effective way of recording thoughts.
do u have a site to sell these??
Currently, these are only personal consumption. However, I can accommodate if you are willing to wait until I perfect the design and start making a batch of finished ones. Unfortunately, I have yet to set an online store. For the meantime, I’m transacting via PayPal for those who are buying my wallet pattern.
How do I buy one my guy??
Currently, these are only personal consumption. However, I can accommodate if you are willing to wait until I get like a batch of these ready made by late next month, late December. Unfortunately, I have yet to set an online store. For the meantime, I’m transacting via PayPal for those who are buying my wallet pattern.
Where can I find these?
Can’t produce this in mass yet. It’s my original design. I’ll be making a video on how to create your own, and probably something more standard like a 3.5”x5.5” Fieldnotes notebook size than the smaller A7 I show here. It just takes some time to do the video.
I have been looking for something like this. Best design i have seen so far.
Wow, thanks! I’m designing something for the common 3.5”x5.5” notebook size. Stay tuned and check out my Instagram and you can see some of my previous iterations.
Where to buy?
I’m offering the PDF pattern for this for $10 of you are a leather crafter. As for the physical product of this, I’m only offering this to friends at the moment. Cost of freight from Southeast Asia to say, US cost like $75 (at least) via DHL. Regular postal should cost less somehow. So, I’m not keen on exporting this as the freight cost is pretty high and would be disadvantageous for any buyers.
@BADDesignLeather love this one better than any original because of the leather and color combination
You use both sides of your mind. You are an artist and and engineer. You are also a craftsman. Nice work!
Thank you. I’m actually an architect. So, creative designing, material, hardware and details are things that I’m very familiar. Except creating leather is a lot faster to do than a building I’m used to do for months at a time.
Very well design n gd craftsmanship love it.👍
This kinda reminds me of JJ Leathermiths Lucas wallet and the Jonny wallet. But this looks like an improved design, and better than both those.
Thank you. I had to look at JJ Leathersmith’s and saw the similarity with its Oldis wallet. What I’ve done with mine was a depart from Temperedtrail’s Johnny wallet, and focused on better functions.
En mi experiencia las piezas metálicas y algunas costuras dañan a las tarjetas.
Ah, yes, the snap metal does graze the front card. I resolved that by another layer of leather for snap buttons on my tool organizers. So, there would be no metal to metal or metal to plastic touching.
Very cool design and I agree, I haven’t seen anything like this on the market. Is this available for purchase and can you customize the different color of leather and thread combinations?
As a hobbyist of the craft, my focus is designing and quality for personal use first. I’m not yet at a stage where I’ll have to give my time to a business that would demand me just replicating stuff - that would ruin my creativity and be focused on simplicity and economy of materials. Close friends are starting to ask me, but I’m asking them for time for me to do their requests as I only do this part-time with a full-blown professorship. Yes, eventually I’ll do some line-up of commercialization of these creations. I sketch every day and seem to be coming up lots of ideas on paper. I have yet to execute these new ones. I have other leather colors and threads. Now I’m also exploring paracord knots and exotic beads as accents.
Please take my vote for a how-to video. I'm contemplating getting into leather working along with the help of my wife. I also wonder how waxed canvas would work?
Oh, this crafting is fun. I record my long processes and have yet to narrate and edit them. As for canvass material, I’m not yet doing that. I haven’t even contemplated on getting a sewing machine and going that route. Stay tuned as I organize my thoughts on the productions of these videos every day. I’m trying to reach the goal of at least getting out a video every two weeks at least.
This is nice. I would even like it if it didn't open all the way, and it was covered on the sides like a coin purse in a way.
That’s a design I’m working on for two friends. One of them needs to carry at most 30 bills and would like the cash thickness not be seen. Stay tuned.
Agree you going to sell these? I love it.
Eventually... It would not be popular if it's just A7 sized.
I been watching your content for the passed 2 days and the craftsmanship is insane quality. The way I carry items this wouldn't work for me but it would be the perfect organizational tool for most.
Thanks. I’m curious what would you prefer as an organizer for your tools? I could do something in that direction.
absolutely love this. I want to make it myself or buy one but this is a great concept for notebook carry and still have a few tools
Weird that this thing is not being sold. I encourage that you make one if you have the skills and tools for leathercrafting. Most notebook organizers are either 3.5"x5.5" or passport-sized. I cannot find one that is exactly A7 that has good pen, card and money storage. No provisions for small flat tools. So, I invented one. I think current manufacturers are not keen on making something like this as the labor hours for molding and hand-stitching would increase the price. Would you like to see how this is made? I can probably release a video on how this was done. I did not think this video about a notebook organizer would reach 2500 views and rack 82 hours of view time in 3 days!
@@BADDesignLeather I would love a build video. I do a little bit of leather working. I have made just field notes covers and a few wallets. but what you have done with the elastic straps and the money click insert is just so well done. chefs kiss.
Ah. Really, I'm into the hobby of the craft only like a year. Bought the necessary gear and nice leather to make personal items because the market could not answer what I needed. I am tired of seeing the usual bi-fold and how no one is doing much innovation to pocket organizers - hence, you see me creating the Apex EDC organizer to combat what is the usual and many copies of the Tale of Knives belt-mounted organizers. Those elastic bands are usually for pen loops - bought a bunch and got wild with my design sketches. I am an architect by profession, and applying thinking design process like in architecture with needs first, then function, and then looks. Fortunately, I record my process for some B-rolls when I do overview videos. Yeah, I was thinking of showing my entire process of how these things are conceptualized and handmade.
@@BADDesignLeather same i picked it up as a hobby to make field note covers and some small 5 card wallets for family members as gifts. most of the ones ive seen on youtube or etsy/pintrest are the standard cookie cuter styles then I came across yours and was in awe at the design. loved it. cant wait to see future versions.
Great personal carry wallet with very functional sections. I love the size as it's something I would carry daily. Excellent work and I would love to know if you have any intention on selling these?
The biggest problem is the notebook is different from person to person. The entire premise of the design is based on the actual measurements of the A7 notebook and its 5mm thickness. So, it would not match the measurements if it was a Fieldnotes one, or say the Moleskine or Muji. I’m using the A7 Tomoe River Fountain paper notebook. And the front tool pocket is specifically for the BigiDesign TPT Slider tool. Everything else is standard and cash sizes. I’ll need to source an A7 notebook that is quality enough like the Tomoe River and modified to strongly accommodate the attachment to the vertical thread. Let me see what I can do.
@@BADDesignLeather that would be awesome 👌
Do you have blueprints to your design I would love to make one myself
Tell you what: what if I’ll make a video episode that teaches you the design process, based from the things you want to carry, and how to determine the size of the organizer? From sketch, lay outing the patterns, tools, materials, to final product outcome.
@BADDesignLeather i think a lot.of people would love a video like that
No arch/civil scale, no flashlight for exising structure site observation, no military grade camera for documenting contractor mistakes, notebook too small for as-built sketches and plans, sketch pencil and eraser, I could go on. I'm sticking with my sling messenger bag. It also carries a tri-fold copy of permit drawings.
As an architect myself, I carry those things in the bag. An A4 or 8.5”x11” notebook will always be better than A5 or smaller. Heck, yes let’s carry an A2-sized for documentation sketches. A full laser guided transit would be fantastic for surveying room volumes. Let’s not forget carry the desktop computer and 32” monitor for CAD, Rhino and Revit works. And our precious 3D printer. I can go on. The main point of integrating a small notebook and pen is you have one at all times to catch ideas and record meetings and notes. I have an A4 blank notebook if I do quick triangulation surveys on site.
So much effort for most pointless post Ive seen in weeks. You are basically comparing wallet to messenger bag
How a person compare a pocket organizer to a messenger bag is beyond me 🙄🙄🙄
@@NeoradtzI was that guy who carried a 40-liter backpack and carried 5-kilograms (10 pounds+) worth of laptop gear. Nowadays, I’m carrying an iPad mini with an Apple pencil. As I became older, simplifying and reducing gear to just within my pockets. The biggest bag I carry is a 4-liter sling bag to house iPad mini + Apple Pencil, charging gear and the Sony WH-1000X M5 headphones. Everything else is in my pockets.
@@drawingarchitecture same here, my bag only carries an iPad Pro+Pencil, A small pencil case and a notebook. I only carry my charger when the battery on the iPad is a little low. Everything else is in my pocket :)
Any plans on selling something like this?
Not at the moment. Plus, the size of A7 notebooks is not so much popular as 3.5"x5.5" Fieldnotes seem to be most common - in which I cannot find ones with Tomoe River fountain pen-friendly paper. I may need to adjust everything, even the tool storage. While the thought of getting a business started for producing these is very much enticing, I am currently exploring new ideas and focused on designing the best, but not necessarily the most practical to produce as a product. Producers do shortcuts like machine stitching and cheaper materials to come up with a viable price for customers to buy. This one took me 12 hours to produce (minus the design time) because of all the manual cutting, hole punching, hand stitching, mold shaping, edge burnishing, glueing and hot-pressing the logos. I am just showing you a fraction of what I am doing and having fun at designing. This for example had several iterations on CAD and keeps evolving. I do this for myself at the moment and have not found the need to start another income source as my time is limited while having a fulltime job. Yes, I may say yes to some family and friends' requests, but they wait some two weeks for my crafting.
@@BADDesignLeather What about using the Travellers journal passport size of 5" x 3.5"? That way, you can use all the inserts produced for that format, and the Midori paper is fantastic to write on; I use a Twsibi 580 and have no issues at all. If you ever do make pieces, let me know, as at the moment, I'm running a Travellers journal passport size with a few inserts to make it just about serviceable as a wallet (cardholder, etc.). Still, there wasn't anywhere to fit my other EDC, so I also take another wallet with cash, a multitool, and a torch.
@@stephenjohnson3520 Yes, I went into looking at the Traveller's. Since I love how Tomoe River paper is with my fountain pens, and its paper can take watercolor well enough without seeping through, it's the best in terms of my needs. It's perfect for my layered see-through diagrams/drawings for designing architecture. I have used their A5 (for my studio notes and drawings), A6 and currently the smallest which is the A7. Only 52gsm meaning one notebook has 160 pages with just 5mm thickness total with back and front cover included. Of course, I can do a passport version, but it's less motivation for me because I would not be using the best paper and the A7 is smaller and more compact than the passport size. A 3/4" shorter and 1/2" less wide than a passport and therefore if I made a passport version, the organizer would be really bigger. I will make one anyway - for my all-in-one traveler's organizer with a passport, cash, sketchbook, pen and cards. I just need to find some time to design that along with new sets of designs I am currently developing.
Absolutely lovely. The model at 11:11 in particular is just amazing. And your notes and sketches are equally beautiful. They have a real Da Vinci feel to them. I'm eager to see how your craftsman journey goes!
Wow, you are packing a lot of tools into a relatively small pouch. You mentioned it a couple of times that it was pretty heavy when fully loaded. I think I would get tired of wearing that for EDC. However, your design and execution was very good.
In reality, most of the time I carry the pocket slip version of the Apex - the first one which can carry an Olight Warrior Nano, Leatherman Rebar and the Trayvax key organizer. Since the XL is belt-mounted, the weight of the tools inside will be on the hip and can't feel the weight. I am actually designing something that carries even more with a notebook - at paper prototype. I use the XL when I am fixing stuff around the house. But I'm glad to hear your thoughts on this.
Very impressive! Love it!
Amazing. When are they going up for sale!
This is awesome hopefully you sell these one day i would definitely like one
You can probably use a cheap plastic folder or cutting mat from the dollar store to make your own dividers
Yup, I can do that. But I want that consistent cutout of the plastic separators. I just made 2 different designs with this mechanism integrated. I am now taking a look of replacing the regular nylon with a ripstop one for strength and longevity.
@@BADDesignLeather great idea on the ripstop. Gonna use a plot cutter to make the dividers and will try the ripstop idea of yours.
Great video Sir, Where can I get the same one ? Do you have online store
No, sorry. I'm am into new design directions. The card mechanism here is only thing I was interested in.
Really like the thoughtfulness of the design, specifically for this Leatherman (and similar size multitools). Your design sketches and insights are cool to see and hear, and they also give ideas on how to use this specific organizer. I look forward to your future ideas! 👍🏼
Thank you. Designing and making my own EDC leather organizers has been enjoyable - I’m not thinking about reducing material or short cutting the stitches. I get how producers are trying to stay viable by doing those things. I’m thinking of having these things morph, rotate or move. Just know what you are willing and need to carry, take a creative and unique approach, and make one that you’re proud of showing.
Change the name of your channel : that so good to see your note book 🙌🏻
I thought it would be interesting to showcase the process sketches. I usually never see designers share drawings and never talk about insights of their designs. Understandable that some are very protective about their IP. However, I believe in sharing mine for me to move forward for innovating. I’m 3 steps ahead already, and you’ll see what I’m inventing now in 3-6 months later after I’ve done a good deal of corrections. As for the name, BAD is for Bold, Adventurous and Dynamic. This is what I’m setting out to do.
Nice edc wallet. Beautiful design and very functional. You gave me a few ideas for something I am planning on making. Thanks!
And I have 2 design iterations already for improving this design. Probably I’ll get to finish one this coming weekend. It’s one of my goals to stir up the leather craft industry to come up with exciting designs. I’m tired with the usuals. Come back and provide us a link to what you’d come up based on this design.
I love the stictches.. nice modification and you still give credit to the original wallet version.. it is better than someone else who try to sell modification stuff but claim them as their original design.. respect for you dude 👍👍
Yes, and I see you are also creating some of your wallets. My point is to analyze and learn the constructions methods. I am doing some original design patterns. Still leaning.
Great video! It’s super cool to see your changes to the design, I think the belt clip is more to my liking. I’d be super interested in a pattern should you decide to put one out! Designing my own stuff is really interesting to me as well, mostly because things that are mass produced don’t have all the things I need most of the time! Thanks for the inspiration!
Glad that you’re inspired. My main goal is to create better design. The objective of current market designs are simplified, easy to assemble, with limited function. Even worse are those with cheap material. Stay tuned for new organizer designs. My designs aren’t exactly practical to assemble or to mass produce. They need to look good other than answer to accommodate tools efficiently.
I’m considering selling the pattern for this now. PM me via my Instagram for details. Since I don’t have the spare time to make an inventory of these to sell off, the best route is for me to sell the patterns. Just let me know. I just need some time formatting and adding text to my vector drawings for clarity of the diagrams.
You should sell these
Another great design and wonderful work you have done there! I'm waiting for you to put the pattern on sale ^_^

What type of cross stitch are you using?
Regular saddle stitch and reinforcement with a line of cross stitch. So, there are two layers of stitching. I used one long continuous thread to do that one line of stitching. x14 of the length of the stitch line.
Brilliant really well done very comprehensive
I'm currently doing the belt-mounted version of this. Stay tuned for it.
I love the improvements you’ve added! 👏
Thanks! 😄
That would pull my pants down. Guess inside an EDC pack could work.
As I said, I don't actually carry that much. But this just demonstrates that it can carry a lot. I designed this because the regular-sized Apex EDC Tool Organizer can't fit my Surge. I'm currently designing a version that is belt-mounted. Watch out for that soon. You can follow me on Instagram for the latest.
@@BADDesignLeather I think you missed my point. It’s a nice looking piece and in a pack is the only place I can visualize it.
All good. The regular sized version of this fit more comfortable in a pocket but can’t accommodate bigger tools. The next version of this XL would have clip(s) to attach to a backpack pocket or as belt carry. But I’m also designing a smaller-sized for 2 main tools instead of 3.
Ну очень симпатично
Heavy wherever you might put it, some items are quite redundant. Neat leatherwork tho'
Yup. I currently use it for just my Olight Nano, LM Rebar and Trayvax Key Organizer. I do not carry the Surge as EDC - but my friend does and I wanted to make one for him. Developing it as a belt organizer/sheath currently. I'm playing with some new approaches to designing EDC organizers. Check out my Instagram for newer posts.
So...how/where can i buy it?
PM me via my Instagram. But wait on the one with a belt clip. Designing it currently.
looks pretty good, but i have a Q: this means needs to hold it in hands? why not make a loop or clip to attach the product to the belt?
Am working on a version with a belt clip. Currently, it’s a pocket organizer.
Love your design and the thought that went in to making it. Hope you make the pattern available at some point. Thank you
The latest and departure from this design is the Delta Wallet. Have a look at my Instagram.

This is pretty darn cool!!
Thanks! After a week, this latest one in Pueblo leather has a nice patina on the gray.
This looks really nice! Are you planning on making them and selling them?

👌well executed
nice job! i like the design. keep up the good work edit* do you think the buttom could be replaced with a rare earth magnate?
Thanks. I thought about using magnetic snaps before. I’m avoiding it because it can mess up credit or bank cards’ magnetic strips. I’ll be featuring more designs moving forward. I’ve ordered hollow snaps in antique brass and would upgrade the overall quality.
@@drawingarchitecture I could see that also but i figured with the mag wallets and most pos systems requiring chips over strips it might be ok.
You sell them?
@@darrinroach3979 Not at the moment. I’m currently doing this as a hobby. Learning.
