Here I discuss the Lawton era Uriah Heep album Innocent Victim and compare and contrast to David Coverdale's first solo album Whitesnake. Both albums have a snake motif for album art albeit very different. Did Uriah Heep choose this album art to compete with Coverdale? We'll never know but it's fun to consider after all Coverdale did audition for the band once. Both Lawton and Coverdale, though...

WTH! Guitar Solos are Stupid?!

Here is my response to hearing the news that Slipknot originally had guitar solos created by Mick Thomson for the debut album. Common Denominator: David Coverdale; Ranking The Albums of Whitesnake, Deep Purple, & Solo Albums.
Are we sure it is going to be a farewell tour, and they are not oulling a Kiss or Motley Crue? Great video BTW
No; If I had to guess, Heep will not pull a Crue or Kiss bc they have class. I'm American but from my experience British bands and bands from the UK and from the rest of the world are more interested in building a fan base than building a financial empire based on resting on their laurels. Heep have never rested on their past achievements. Thanks for watching. This was a fun video to make. Cheers!
@djacobmadrigal I was being a bit sarcastic with my comment. I don't expect them to do endless farewell tours either; they are a serious band. Don't remember seeing a video of you doing your favorite 20-25 Uriah Heep songs. If you haven't done it, that would be a fun one to do/watch.
@antonnee sorry about that sometimes it’s hard to get sarcasm without tone of voice. I don’t think I’ve done that. Great idea. I haven’t done a video for that playlist in a while; 😀
Great band! Nice show!
Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate it.
The list of bands that I should like but don't is pretty extensive (you've mentioned a few in the video), so won't even go into that 38:30 list. But, for me, what decides of I like a band is the vocals; if I cannit get het into the vocals, I won't get into the band no matter how great the musicianship might be.
One of the reasons I don't like Death Metal. Some great guitar, bass, and drums but terrible vocals. One person once suggested i just tune out the vocals. Impossible for me.
@djacobmadrigal I understand completely. I've made peace with death metal vocals, somewhat, and can listen to it for short periods of time. However, I cannot get into black metal at all, the shrieking vocals and nonstop blast beats just tire me out in seconds; I do like so,e atmospheric black metal, like Agalloch, because the songs are mostly instrumental, tranquil and slow paced. I have the same issue with. and that have a singer with clean vocals; if the voice doesn't convince, I'm out.
Agree. Labels/categories/subcategories are ok but, at the moment, it's gone completely out of hand. Maybe stopping at a couple of subgenres is the way to go like doom death metal, blackened thrash metal, etc. Otherwise, what the heck would a band described as post industrial avantgarde Celtic symphonic metal even sound like? Just ridiculous; might as well just call it fruit cocktail metal, a bit of everything is included.
Agree with you. All the arguing back and forth takes away some of the enjoyment of the music; if nothing else, argue but keep it private. Fat chance of this happening though with the rise of social media; an industry, so to speak, that thrives in highlighting the worst side of human beings. Also, 100% agree with you regarding talking about someone who has died. It should be a time of forgiveness and grace as the person lost the battle that, in the end, we will also lose. Just lay down your weapon, and move on as there is no need to pile on someone who is no longer here.
Funny, Blackout was my first Scorpions album too. Both records highlighted are great but my vote would go to Blackout for sentimental reasons too. Maybe, for the hit factor Sting ahould be ahead by just a tad but hard to argue against either opus. I am all for an unboxing of your gear when you get it, and even in for some playing. Maybe not a whole song but a couple of minutes jsut to get an idea whatnit sounds like and to get a run down of the pedals, amps, etc you are using.
Agree with you that guitar solos are not stupid. Soloing is an art and not as easy as musiciams make it look; I'm learning to play guitar and I'm having trouble with some of the riffing, and cannot imagine the mess I'll make when I get to the solo parts. Also, agree with you that, maybe, not every song needs a guitar solo as it can become a cliche as it's expected. However, it would be interesting if bands did more solos with other instruments be that bass, drums, keyboards, etc. The sax solo in the song Urgent by Foreigner smokes. Also, it would be interesting to see what the songs from all these grunge/alt rock and metal bands would soumd like with a guitar solo. A good example would be Pearl Jam's Alive; the guitar solo on that song is fire.
Agree with your take completely. It's a cash grab and a way to fleece customers. I love music but I have to admit that this nonsense has turned me off, somewhat, to music. One thing you touched upon and I'll expand on a little bit is the anniversary issues/reissues. Do people really need a 20 year anniversary, 25 year anniversary, 30 year anniversary of the same album? Just stick to a format and end the foolishness, make it the 25th anniversary, 50th anniversary, 75th anniversary 😳😳😳, etc. It's ridiculous that you have the 10th anniversary, 16th anniversary, 22.5 year anniversary. Also, for legacy bands mostly, if you have demos of songs that for one reason or another didn't make itnto the album and include them in an anniversary reissue, produce the damn song and bring itnto the level of the released songs. Pretty sure the bigher bqnds have plenty of money and personal recording studios that can invest some money into finishing the song. Moreover, a 20 second bit, unless it is some sort of intro, is not a song; don't list them as a bonus track.
Agree, mostly, with you personal inclusions/honorable mentions. And, I would add the following: - Accept - Dream Theater - Peter Gabriel - Eric Clapton - Billy Joel - Ted Nugent - Dio/Ronnie James Dio - Foreigner - Soundgarden Don't remember if you inluded them in your list but I'd also add Boston and Queensryche.
Queensryche is not there but would be 51. I only like Boston’s first two albums. Dio would be 52 I guess. I forgot Whitesnake they are in my top 10. So The Who is out.
@djacobmadrigal Didn't mention Whitesnake because I thought it was on the main list but, yes, the band should get at least an honorable mention.
I just realized I forgot to include one of my favorite bands which is Whitesnake (see my video of my favorite Top Ten Bands) so that means I’m ousting The Who from the list. I can’t believe I forgot them.🤦
For sake of qrgument, I'll group hair and glam metal together. Not a big fan of either but some consideration has to be given to the time when it came out. It sprouted in the warly to mid 80s, and really besides Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and the NWOBHM there was nothing really that heavy around; to consider as well is that this is when labels strated to appear, heavy metal, glam, hair etc. When speed/thrash metal reared it's head, everything, pretty much, started to sound like Pat Boone (exaggerating somewhat) and all subsequent music got faster, heavier, darker to the point where this is the metal standard when people think of heavy metal. Agree with your premise although I think both terms (hair, glam) were a record label creation and haphazardly placed bands in that genre. To me a better term would have been pop metal, somewhat heavy songs with poppy tendencies. Hair/glam metal is now used as a pejorative description lile yacht rock or neo prog.
Pat Boone 🤣🤣🤣 Pop Rock or Pop Metal is better than hair metal.
@djacobmadrigal Yea, it's what the genre/style should've been called. Also, have to say that Pat Boone released an album called In a Metal Mood (or something similar) where he took metal songs and turned them into, sort of, big band/swing compositions; it's a riot. As a fan of swing and big bands as well, I appreciated his interpretations.
I remember him doing some songs on TV; he came out in a gray leather outfit and a motorbike; It was entertaining for sure.
Also, congrats on 400 subscribers.
Thanks
It would be interesting to know the criteria used to come up with this ranking. Did they use album sales, concert ticket sales, Grammy nominations/wins, longevity, etc?
Good question. For me it’s a matter of emotions and good songwriting, good lyrics, sound quality, vibe, dedication to the craft, artistic integrity.
@@djacobmadrigalIt truly is a subjective ranking and you have valid parameters.
I guess "Sharon Osborne" chose the new singer??
The best thing to happen to metal in years.
I misspoke: Still Loving You indeed has the lyrics where the relationship is over and the speaker is asking for a second chance.
Thanks for sharing your love of the music. I’d like to track down the Diament/Sidore versions.
If I said 2018 I meant 2008.
Hey I love the Innocent Victim album
Straight up I don’t like the complete box set because of the small album images on the individual albums. Mainly Marino remasters from 1990 I guess. The individual albums came in 1994 again obviously Marino remasters. I’ve the 2007 Japanese mini LP box. Again based on Marino masters. I’ve 1990 Remasters on 4CD/ 6LP boxes and 1993 Box set 2. All late 80s on vinyl and Mothership, TSTTS, Complete BBC and HTWWW vinyl boxes too. I’m currently collecting the 1986 CD issues mainly Diament and I really like them. Warm and dynamic. I’m going to buy the Jimmy Page 2014 deluxe CDs and single vinyl albums next. Anyway, what I nearly forgot to mention was this, the music is great. Absolutely great except ITTOD which is a turkey in my mind.
The cat meowing isn't an actual cat, it's Steven.
John Lawton is what I always imagined Tom Jones would sound like if he were with a rock band. Powerful, often mesmerizing, vocals particularly on soulful ballads. I had to stop your review and immediately listen to the bootleg Ten Miles High on You Tube. Thanks!
Heep all the way. Innocent Victim is a great album. Perhaps more ballads than most which is why it is a favourite of mine.
My favourite song on this whitesnake album is BLINDMAN. Excellent
Here is the link to the RUclips upload of the album if anyone is interested. Cheers! ruclips.net/video/nXTkGOwm62I/видео.htmlsi=B3TOBXK4RsDYsCjl
Lawton couldn't have done all those songs since Sloman wrote 2 of them.
The voice doesn’t lie. Look it up on RUclips under Uriah Heep Ten Miles High or look at it on Discogs website. I’ve had this downloaded for years. I know what I’m talking about. I can’t explain the songwriting credit but the music is there. Here’s the music on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/nXTkGOwm62I/видео.htmlsi=B3TOBXK4RsDYsCjl
In the liner notes of Conquest it says that Hensley wrote Feelings, Bolder wrote Fools, and Hensley wrote Been Hurt.
Very good comparison, Come Taste The Band truly is a great but very underrated album 💯😃👍
At the time it came out, The Black Album blew me away. I knew a handful of songs from AJFA but wasn't a Metallica fan. The Black Album changed that for me. Musically, I get that it doesn't stand up if you are a fan of the earlier albums but this album takes me back to a specific time and place and will always have a place on my favorite album list.
Solid list and will hqve to check out some of the bands you listed especially ones at rhe bottom of the list. I would heve imcluded the complete discography of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, and called it a day. Iced Earth's Horror Show should be included as well.
Red is hard to top by any progressive band. Song Starless is brilliant.
Couple of good song maybe 3 not heeps strongest album After that album ken left....
Great video, but I would argue that Stained Class and Hell Bent are absolutely metal albums of their time :)
Some of it is metal but much of it to my ears is Hard Rock. I’ll concede Saints In Hell is a metal song
I clearly remember how disappointed I was when I first listened to it back in March 80. As most old Heep fans I really hoped for a return to the classic mighty heavy heep sound of the early 70ies. Especially Sloman never fit into the band. Today I have to say that some songs are good, like immagination, fools, out on the street or carry on. So give it a second chance. greetings from Germany
Joanna means piano I think it's pretty bad I agree it's the 2nd worst after Equator.I nearly bought it when I was 15 and glad I didn't...
Just discovered this band as a randaom recommended video...agree with you 100%. Amazing album
I have to go with Abominog though I love Perfect Strangers! 🤘
I failed to mention that Uriah Heep did briefly adapt with the times on the horrible album Equator: way too keyboard 80’s driven. One of their worst releases.
Perfect strangers is my fave purple song..love it so much❤❤❤
Love heep and purple..some great songs on abominog ..but it's not one of heeps strongest or best album's. So purple wins this one. 👍🎹🎸🥁🎵🎶🎹
Think it Over was a single, not on Conquest. Great song. You should consider doing both bands follow up albums
@@djacobmadrigal Think it Over was a John Sloman song, released as a single
@@Heepster69correction there is an import version of Conquest with bonus/expanded tracks that includes the Sloman led song Think It Over. I did get my wires crossed: the song by Uriah Heep that has a Sloman version and a Lawton version is the song Been Hurt which I have as an MP3. Anyway thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers!
Hair metal isn't Metal !!!!
Personally I like you compare and contrasting competive albums. I appreciate your perspective. I own most releases by both these two bands but on this comparison perfect strangers is light years ahead of abomig imho. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing!
Perfect Strangers for me by a good bit.
I believe that the Generation X labeled Black Sabbath as a metal group, just my opinion. 😎👍
This is a response to Jared L'espe'rence about Black Sabbath being a metal band. Just to let you know that I come from the baby boomer generation and correct me if I am wrong, I assume you are Generation x,with that being said when Black Sabbath came out with their debut in 1970 I was 15 and we labeled it hard rock. We couldn't label it metal because the term did not exist yet, at least not in my neck of the woods. In my generation we only started hearing the word metal when the animated movie Heavy Metal came out in the mid 80's was the first time we ever heard the term, so to me Black Sabbath is a hard rock band. Just my opinion no offense intended to anyone. 😎👍
First time I heard the phrase Heavy Metal is in the song Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf. Thanks for commenting Rayna; I like when people can speak their viewpoint about music. ❤️
I believe it was referring to the motorcycle in the song. 😎
@raynaRobichaud absolutely. Plus there are metals that are heavy metals like osmium, etc. kinda neat.
I consider most of these to be rock. Metal is a bit more heavy and intense. Bands like poison are definitely not metal. The term, hair metal is a generalized term that lumps these bands into the same category as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metallica. They are not cut from the same cloth. For me, two of the best examples of hair metal would be the debut album from W.A.S.P. or the 2nd album from motley crue.
Sure some bands. WASP, Twisted Sister and Dokken are considered metal Because of their riffing. Poison, Bon Jovi, and Def Leopard are more hard rock.
WASP definitely and early TS; I disagree with Dokken. Some of it is metal but not enough to call them a full blown metal band. Just my take. Thanks so much for sharing ur viewpoint
@@djacobmadrigal Dokken could be borderline but Unleashed in the East is for sure metal, live they come across heavier and listen to the songs Kiss of Death and Into the Fire. Aggressive riffing.
Agreed. Used to have that on vinyl until Hurricane Katrina destroyed all my records. It’s funny how live a band can be so different.
Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk Railroad, Uriah Heep, The Who, are HARD ROCK BANDS and not HEAVY METAL BANDS. 😎
@@raynaRobichaud I agree except Sabbath. 100% metal.
Great ranking. I subscribed.
Thanks 😊
No bother at all.@@djacobmadrigal
Great topic. For me the difference between a favourite album and their best album, is the memories that are associated with it. For example Tormato is my favourite Yes album, certainly not one that's remotely considered their best, but every time I listen to it it takes me back to a very happy time in my life. The same goes for pink Floyds Meddle.
That totally makes sense. Memories which tie to our emotions. Great explanation; thanks for commenting!!!
Let me amend my comment about not singing along to heavy metal; I sing along (sometimes) to heavy metal songs but only in private like while driving but pop, melodic rock and “hair metal” people sing to the music in public and even dance to. With heavy metal that’s not “hair metal” I’m pretty sure there’s no dancing just head banging.
