A Frosty Morning at the Earthship

January and after 2 weeks of really cold temps and more cloudy days than sunny, the temps inside the earthship dropped to below 15C. We didn't build a fireplace into the living area as this is not the norm here, and fireplaces take up a lot of room. And used to use a back-up gas heater but since getting a proper grown up gas oven we now use cooking as a way to heat. Donkey has hurt her leg and ...

Nice idea. Thx PS. Please don’t use that music.
Thank you :). Not sure what's wrong with the music? It was a copyright free option in the app I used to create the video many years ago.
@@cuevasdesolearthshipspain416It’s just weird sounding like it should be played in a haunted house.

This is a wonderful idea! I did paint on teabags, and used the art on greatings cards. Your art paper looks very nice, and can be used in many ways, say, in a junk journal? Thanks for sharing this idea! ~Janet in Canada
You're very welcome Janet, and making the larger sheets into a journal is a great idea!
This is an interesting concept...I hope it will work for me, too.......................😻
Hi Karin, did you try it? Hope it worked for you....😻
Wish I saw this 8 months ago 😂 glad you are still making videos. Would love an update on the earthship and farm xo
Is this sold? how to contact?
Hiya, still for sale. Email me at laura@abo.co.uk
Thank you for sharing. I love your use of recycling things to make art. You inspire me.
Hi do you own the cotija for sale please?
Hiya Lilian, yes, I just replied to your other comment. Sorry for the delay I only just saw your messages 😊
Is it still for sale? 😊
Hiya, yes it is 😊
Greetings from the LooseNatural farm in Andalusia Spain
Honeybees aren't attracted to Morning Glories. Butterflies and Hummingbirds are main pollinators. Other kinds of (small) bees and some moths will also visit them. They also self-pollinate which means they will send out pollen on their own. That's why you see pollen "crumbs" on them. Pollinators don't leave bits like that.
I have seen humming birds and bumble bees on them
I tried replicating this and my paper turned out brittle. I could bend it a little bit but couldn’t completely crease it without it cracking. Is there any way to avoid this?
Sorry, only just seen your message, I haven't had problems with cracking when folding. Have you tried folding it when it's still a bit damp?
Wow Laura, you're so speedy! ;-)

Hello and thank you for your videos. We are a few friends living in Orgiva that's very interested in your earthship and was wondering if we could come for a visit? You have some way to get in contact? Best regards /Fredrik
Combining a dome with the earthship concept is very cool, kudos! I would really like to know if it's possible to take it a step further: would it be possible to actually use just a self-contained dome - a monolithic one, say - as the basis for a working earthship? Monolitihic domes have some very cool properties in regard to a passive house design on their own, but would they be compatibel with the earthship, since their shapes are so different? Earthships are long and shallow to allow the sun to reach a large fraction of the interior (in winter), while domes are very deep shapes. Questions to ponder...
Hiya, interesting thought! I’m not sure if a monolithic dome could be called an earthship. I guess it would depend on how and what you construct it with. Ours is a dome sitting on top of tyres on an earth cliff. So there is the mass that an earthship has. The dome is insulated to a degree, maybe more insulation would be better. Then you need to allow as much sun in to heat the place but keep it out in the summer so it stays cool. You could easily catch your water from the dome and maybe install a planter...
@@cuevasdesolearthshipspain416 Oh wow, thank for the reply! Yeah, that's basically what I was thinking, too. It wouldn't technically be an earthship in the original sense, but I'm hoping it's possibel to integrate many of the self-sustainability aspects of an earthship. Mike Reynolds (I think) described an earthship as a machine that carries out a handful of functions simply thanks to its smart design. Heating/cooling, collecting water, growing food, right. A monolithic dome could definitely do a lot of that, too, and it would offer its own huge thermal mass, with good insulation. I'm just not sure if the internal dynamics of a dome structure (for example the constant air circulation) would complement the "greenhouse" aspect of the earthship concept. Things like maintaining livable temperature levels inside, etc. The search continues!;) Many thanks for sharing your own awesome experiment!
ghostbeetle you’re welcome and good luck with your research
Right, that's it, I'm saving all my tea-bags! Quick question: could you place the paper straight onto the plastic sheet, or maybe use cling-wrap, so you don't have to transfer it? Thanks! 🙂
Hi Rachel, yes you could do it straight onto plastic. I’d go for a thicker plastic so it doesn’t move around too much as you’re pasting. I make an A4 version which I do onto a plastic folder sleeve with A4 paper inside as a size guide
😄👍🐳
🙏🏻🌊😘
WOW!!! What a clever idea. I already save my tea bags to use in collaging, and junk journals. I love them. I've NEVER seen anything like this. How in the world did you think to do this??? I don't eat much pasta. But I wonder if I could use starch powder instead??? I've seen people use starch powder for other crafty things. Can't remember WHAT! But I will see if I can buy some. I will cook myself some pasta in meantime. I hate to think of eating pasta NOT cooked in salted water. I wonder how this would work if I DID add a bit of salt to water. I add salt to my organic dyes so they don't get moldy. And it usually doesn't effect color or leave a residue. Its worth trying. I think if I boil the pasta water on very low, it would get thicker & stronger. I don't like to boil my pasta in small amount of water. I will do some experimenting. Thank you for this FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! I'm loving this idea. This is my 1st time to your channel. Austin,TX USA
Hi Barbara, the idea just developed from rice glue which I found too grainy and it was using the whole grain of rice. With the pasta water glue you get to eat the pasta and then use what was going to be thrown out - right up my street! Let me know how you get on with salt in the water. I’ve done watercolour paintings on these papers and they seem to hold the colour true. Btw, if you find the glue a bit too runny after you’ve left it for a few hours you could always boil it again to reduce it. Any left over glue will keep in the fridge for quite some time too
Yes please teach us how to do this. Hello from Australia!
Hello Australia, hope all ok there. The more I get asked how I did this the further up my list of to dos it goes 😁
This is a wonderful idea thank you for sharing. May I please have the recipe for the starch?
You’re welcome Fiona 😊 I make the starch when I’m cooking up some spaghetti. I use a little less water than usual and don’t put in salt or oil. You’ll need to stir the spaghetti a bit more to stop it sticking. Then drain in a sieve but once bulk of water is gone put the sieve over the saucepan and give the spaghetti a shake to get the rest. Leave this water in the saucepan to cool and it should be thick enough to use as the glue.
Beautiful 🤩
Thank you!
I would very much like to know how to make this! I have lots of old socks 😉 Greetings from Finland 🇫🇮 ❤️
Hello to Finland from Spain! I’ll try and put a video together showing how I did this
Vraiment très beau
Merci beaucoup Diane
I’ve never seen anyone do this. Thank you for sharing. What type of pasta do u cook to have that thick starch left over ?
I use a normal spaghetti with enough water to cook it, but not lots. Don’t put in salt or oil and stir it more while cooking as the reduced water might make it more sticky. Drain in a sieve then catch the last drops over the saucepan. Leave for a few hours to let it stiffen. Let me know how you get on 😊
Awesome idea, thank you! 🤩🏆👌
You’re welcome!
Is the resulting paper fountain pen friendly? How much does the ink feather and bleed through?
Hi there, I’ve used a fine liner and watercolour on the finished paper. The watercolour does have a mind of its own but I’ve been really happy with the results. You can see a couple of finished pieces on the homepage of my web site www.lauradaviesart.co.uk

Very nicely done, are these used teabags or new
Thank you Yasmeen! they're used chamomile tea bags ;-)
Will matte medium work?
Elizabeth F. Kaplan I try not to use acrylics because of the plastic content. But yes it would stick them together. You’d get a surface that would be different to paint on than the starch glue version.

Well Done! I alway thought Bucky Fuller's geodesic model will conbine perfectly with an earthship... You demostrated it...!

Wow!! Ahora ya se lo que me faltaba para mi eco house! Un geodome!
How do I make the pasta water paste?
Hi Edge, use as little water as you can to boil the pasta and don't put oil or salt in. You'll probably have to stir it a bit more than usual to stop it sticking. Then pour the pasta into a sieve (draining the excess water into the sink) and quickly put the sieve of pasta over the saucepan to let it drain the last bits of water. When cooled these should become gloopy and will make for a good glue. If it's still a bit runny you could boil it to get out more water. Once you're happy with the consistency pour it into a jar so you can store it in the fridge. Let me know how it goes :-)
What an amazing way to recycle this water from cooking! Thanks for sharing! I was wondering of that pasta glue attracts insects or last well with time?
@@smilingsunlight Thanks so much Stephanie! So far I've seen no signs of insect damage or any other deterioration - and have been using this method for a year or two. You do need to make sure when boiling the pasta that everything is clean and no adding salt or oil.
Are you concerned with off-gassing from all the exposed tires?
Hi James, not at all! We were part of a research study years ago where we sent dust particles collected close to the tyre walls to be analysed. They found no toxic or unusual substances from ours or the other earthships involved in the study. Having said that, we do plan to cover the tyres with some sort of finish eventually - it's just a matter of time ;-)
@@cuevasdesolearthshipspain416 Thanks for that info. I live in an earthship myself in New Mexico. I've heard conflicting information about off-gassing. Do you happen to know if the study you referenced is available to read online somewhere?
@@aloneinanearthship4010 hello fellow earthshipper!! I'll see if I can find the study results to send to you. It was a while ago so bear with me ;-) Do you have an email address I can send the pdf to?
