Motorcycle Heaven (or Hell): Hairpin Curves on the Gavia Pass in Italy - 360 deg Camera, HD, 6/2023
I used a helmet-mounted Insta360 X3 camera for my ascent to the Gavia Pass, coming from the south and going to Bormio across the Gavia. With the 360 camera I could select unique viewing angles to capture the tightness of many of the hairpin curves of that pass.
While the nearby Stelvio pass also has many hairpin curves, some of which are just as tight as those of the Gavia pass, the asphalted road of the Stelvio is generally wider than that of the Gavia pass. For that reason the Gavia pass is widely considered to be technically more challenging for motorcyclists than the Stelvio.

Stelvio Pass in Italy on a Motorcycle. 360 deg Camera, HD, June 2023
Просмотров 680Год назад
This video shows the passage over the Stelvio Pass by motorcycle. Bikers love this pass because of the many challenging hairpin curves and the marvelous views. The 360-deg camera used for this video allowed me to select the most interesting viewing angle at any time. I had mounted my Insta370 X3 camera on my helmet to assure an unencumbered view in all directions. Music by Esther Abrami
Skiing a Black Diamond Trail at Breckenridge - After a 42-year Break from Skiing (4K, GoPro 9)
Просмотров 632 года назад
I had a chance to ski again after not having skied for 42(!) years. The question was, would I remember anything? something? No better way to find out than trying to ski a Black Diamond trail at Breckenridge, Colorado. See how it went in this video.
The Marvelous Magnetic Marble Machine - 3D-printed, Arduino-controlled, Full HD

I had some time at my hands and decided to make a marble machine. It ended up taking four months, but I am pleased with the results. The video is narrated and there isn't much to add, so I'll just offer some technical details below, for my fellow geeks. 3D Printer: Qidi Tech X-Plus Filament: Mostly PLA, some ABS Arduino-compatible microprocessor: Teensy 4.0 Elevator motor: N20 form factor, 6V 3...
Motorcycle Group Ride with Tampa Police under the S.M.A.R.T. Safety Program
Просмотров 2162 года назад
Last weekend Laurie and I took part in an advanced motorcycle safety course conducted by Tampa Police over the course of two days. 10 hours on Saturday (from 7:00 am - 5:00 pm) and five hours on Sunday. The highlight on Sunday was an 81-mile group ride. There were only five "citizen" riders and five Tampa Motor Police officers. With this 1:1 ratio between instructors and students, no mistake, s...
Gavia Pass in the Italian Alps - Not for the Faint of Heart. 4K, Motorcycle, Hairpin Curves, U-turns
Просмотров 15 тыс.2 года назад
My wife Laurie and I traveled through the Alps in Italy in September 2021. I rode a motorcycle, she drove an SUV. A GoPro Hero 9 was mounted to the front of the motorcycle windscreen and recorded 4K video wherever it was legal to do so. The video here documents our easy ascent of the Gavia Pass from its north side and, with more detail, our descent on the south side, which was challenging and, ...

Stelvio Pass Italy - Italian Alps by Motorcycle - 4K, GoPro Hero 9, 3D Terrain Preview, Telemetry

My wife and I traveled through the Alps in September 2021. I rode a motorcycle, she drove an SUV. A GoPro Hero 9 was mounted to the front of the motorcycle windscreen and recorded 4K video wherever it was legal to do so. We recorded tens of hours of high-quality video and also got some good 4K shots with a DJI Mavic Air 2 drone. Back home after the trip, we extracted full telemetry data (e.g., ...
Beginner Kiteboarding about 25 hours after graduating from One-on-One Instruction
Просмотров 733 года назад
I recorded this video about two years ago but didn't post it in hopes of making a better sequel later. That didn't happen, so this is what I got. At the time I had spent one season or about 25 hours of kiteboarding on my own, after my instructor had cleared me to do so.

Persistence of Vision (PoV) Clock
Просмотров 6993 года назад
I recently created this PoV clock. One of its less ubiquitous features is that it employs a strip of individually controllable LEDs. This makes it easier to place the microcontroller (an Arduino-compatible Teensy 4.0) and electronics in the base of the clock, rather than on the rotor. However, this approach necessitates the use of an Arduino/Teensy library which imposes tricky timing constraint...

DJI Mavic Air 2 Used as a Fixed Rearward-facing Dash Cam on Motorcycle
Просмотров 2194 года назад
I wanted to videotape my wife riding her Kawasaki Z650 behind me. The simple rearward-facing dashcam on my bike doesn't serve this purpose well because it leans with my bike (thus tilting the horizon) in curves, and the subject doesn't stay centered in the picture in curves. To overcome these issues I strapped my DJI Mavic Air 2 rigidly to the luggage rack of my bike. The drone's FocusTrack fea...
HoverBot - First Quadcopter Drone - Concept Demonstration in 1992
Просмотров 77110 лет назад
The HoverBot was invented by Dr. Johann Borenstein at the University of Michigan in 1992. It is believed to be the first ever drone based on a quadrotor or quadcopter concept. The project lasted for only three months before the funding agency, the Department of Energy, decided to discontinue the project because they felt it would be too dangerous to have drones performing video surveillance in ...

Did this yesterday. The video does not do it justice. Absolutely terrifying if you don't like heights and exposure. We did Stelvio up and down the same morning like it was a milk run compared to this

I came up from the direction of the Umbrail Pass. When you go there in June make sure that the Stelvio pass is open. Right now the pass is closed. Easiest way to check is to look at Google Maps and tell it that you want to go from Umbrail Pass to Stelvio Pass. Also, I want to recommend to you going over the Gavia Pass, which is near the Stelvio Pass. The Gavia Pass is more exciting. I have two videos on the Gavia Pass, you can look them up in my channel.

Hi, thanks for your kind words. I would gladly send you the code, but there are reasons why I prefer not to do so: 1. The code will run *only* on a Teensy 4.0 and requires some of the Teensy-specific libraries. 2. My code is complex and spread out over six files (which, in the Arduino IDE, are six tabs). These files include many fragments that are carry-overs from previous projects that I thought might be useful in this one. In the end, some fragments were useful while others were not. In yet other words: My code would need a lot of "cleanup" before it would be useful to anybody else. 3. Because of my Point (2) above, anybody who wanted to try my code would necessarily come back at me with questions, many questions. However, I don't want to spend my time on answering those questions. So, in the interest of my sanity and yours, I *prefer* not to make my code available. 4. If, in light of the above, if you still want my code, let me know and I will send it to your email address, as long as you agree to refrain from asking me any follow-up questions.

@@johannborenstein7757 Please send me the Teensy code + libraries that you have utilized for this project. I would try my level best to understand the code even though it is complex as you've mentioned. And, YES, I do agree that I wouldn't bother you further with my questions anymore. Thanks in advance!
