A Christmas special - learn to play Jingle bells with two hands.

Listening to what you play is essential. Once you can identify the sound you are making you will hear when it changes. In this video a simple change of hand position using white notes and the same fingers can completely change the sound and emotion of a song. It’s amazing, it’s magical.

In this video we begin by listening to the repeated rhythmic pattern in the song 'Mary had a little lamb' - Little lamb, short short long - repeats on different pitches. We then add the skipping rhythm, known as a dotted rhythm - skipping works to teach this sound effectively. Towards the end we discover different keys to play the same song.

Having found a 'beginner' video to teach the blues, it was too fast for my pupils, so this is an introduction to that video.

How we sit and play the piano is very important, but equally being too rigid with this will cause unwanted tension. Each and every one of our bodies is different, my first and most important piece of advice is relax and play with a natural position aiming at curving fingers, levelling arms and wrists and straightening our postures. Feet must be flat, whether on a stool or on the floor.

Deepa dives into travelling thumb technique

A new song, Baby shark, introduces the use of the thumb as well as both hands playing together. In this song we can use the higher and lower sounds of the keyboard to describe the different sharks in the family, the deep voice of Grandpa and Daddy sharks and the higher voices of Mummy and Baby Shark. We even explore how to make the piano sound a little scary!

The thumb differs from the other digits in having only two tubular bones and it has much freedom of movement being opposable to the tips of the other digits. It needs careful use, both when using it for piano playing, but also when resting it whilst using the other fingers. Here we use the thumb for the first time.

Revise learning to write out your basic rhythms using Old Macdonald had a farm to work out the long and short sounds aurally.

Using the song, Hot Cross Buns, we learn to find two different note names on the piano, G and C. G comes every 8 notes, so we play an octave and learn to move between the different keys quickly. Middle C sits in the middle of the piano.
