NEIGHBOURS & LOCAL HISTORY - THE NORTH OF ENGLAND - BILLINGHAM, DARLINGTON, MIDDLESBROUGH, NEWCASTLE, STOCKTON, YORK & YARM Most people living in the North of England think they know their neighbours and local history but how would you know your neighbour worked for MI6? Most who knew the Fairclough family didn’t have a clue that from the seventies Bill Fairclough was a secret agent (MI6 codename JJ) working for various intelligence agencies. What’s more they had no idea he was following in his parents’ footsteps. Bill's parents met during the Second World War when his father, ostensibly working for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), worked secretly on creating bombs to wipe out the Nazi's industrial hinterland. They married in Yarm in 1941. After the war in Europe ended in May 1945, Dr Richard Alan Fairclough continued to work for British Intelligence (MI1). Not long after retiring from ICI in the seventies, Richard Fairclough opened and ran an antiquarian book shop business in Yarm until his death in 1987. The book shop was a bit of an enigma as it was also a haunt for spooks. When not gated at St Peter’s School, York Bill Fairclough spent most of his childhood and early teens in the North East of England. As a child in the fifties he was educated at Red House School in Norton. He lived in Billingham and then in a vast white house (once the home of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley) in Norton Green overlooking the duck pond. In Bill’s teens, the Faircloughs lived in Middleton St George and later in Yarm. He also lived in flats he rented near nightclubs he helped run during the late sixties and early seventies in Portrack, Stockton-on-Tees and Jesmond in Newcastle upon Tyne. Conveniently for him they were near the offices of the firm of Chartered Accountants he worked for in Middlesbrough and Newcastle upon Tyne. So if you lived, worked or visited any of these places you may well have unwittingly encountered this “spooky” family, been their neighbours or inhabited the houses they lived in. A quick web-search will even disclose some of the addresses where they lived. Mind you, if you live in any of them now, best sweep them for bugs! Details of where the Faircloughs lived and worked are given in most of Bill Fairclough’s bios on the web such as can be found at everipedia.org/wiki/lang_en/bill-fairclough. If you were as fascinated as we were, you can also read the raw fact based thriller Beyond Enkription, the first stand-alone novel to be released in The Burlington Files series (theburlingtonfiles.org/#/reviews). It’s a memorable and distinctively different noir espionage thriller based on his and his family’s experiences in 1974.
Some commentary to explain what we’re looking at would be nice.
Originally from Teesville - Redcar was a popular childhood day out back in the mid 1960's and throughout the 70's. Back then it was absolutely packed - now it's sadly a case of "where is everybody??!?". Still it's nice to see the old place so thanks for posting this and it,s a "like" from this exile in the deep South
Ho visitato anni fa il luogo della battaglia e' veramente emozionante. Sempre w l'imperatore!!!!!
I hate that damn monument that ruined the battlefield.
Should be a tribute to the dead on both sides sheer slaughter
One big tourist attraction. They have spoilt it....Theme park next.
7 years on and its still half asleep
Ruined by those ugly turbines
I've seen the hoof shaped carving/indent on the underside of the bridge. However I did also hear of a landowner in Saxon times named Aefel who lived in the area. Theory goes that when the Normans took control it was common for them to place a D in front of names and so Aefel's land became D'Aefel's land and the bridge leading to his land became known as D'Aefel's Bridge, and overtime this has changed to Devil's Bridge.
Lovely Church. My Great Great Grandfather was baptized here. I have many ancestors buried here too

Lovely place to visit, spent many hours taking it all in. Thanks for the reminder.

Ever watched Lord of the Rings? Elijah Wood puts on a damn-fine performance.
Go on so....
I want to have an intellectual conversation with you.
Because the video is still there for all to see. And the comments thread for that video are there for all to see too. And to reply to too. It's a function of youtube, that site you went on to, voluntarily, and posted your opinion of someone else and their views. So if you don't like people replying to older comments of yours, you can a) stay off youtube b) not leave comments at all that can be replied to at a later date or c) don't reply at all to those comments added after the "argument".
That was (as I said) over a year ago when I was actually bothered getting into it. Now though, The question is, Why are you replying to a comment nearly 2 years old? Hmm?
You seem to give enough of a shit to keep replying to comments aimed your way...
Because I don't give a shit about an argument that happened near-to 2 years ago?
I'd say you're a bag of laughs around the dinner table....
Yes.
Explain that short answer.....please.
Yes.
Sorry mate, you didn't serve Ireland. You served the then Irish government, Big difference. The Irish government, FF, FG, Labour etc are and were a branch of the European integration government which forced multiculturism on Ireland. You served, however unknowningly, the very master that inflicted on Ireland that which you claim to despise so much.
my home town
