Hi I was just asking I’m in year 13 and I do Math Economics and Computer Science to do a Conputer Science degree at Warwick or Ucl or kings college. My prediction are A* A A* in that order and was wondering do I still have a chance of getting into a top Russell group even though I know economics isn’t the best fit and physics or fm was better?
Hi, fm would have helped your application and it may not be too late to take AS fm as I did however it's not the end of the world. To make a competitive application, a 3A* prediction will be more beneficial as well as a strong personal statement. Feel free to contact me on @codedbyjade on instagram for personal statement help
Hello thank you so much for making this video it was so much helpful for me.but here is a question...can i use any other thing instread of "len" in this code?
Thanks, I was having a hard time making a countdown timer work, I got my inspiration from the tomate timer.
This is the only video that I found helpful out of the 10 I watched. Thank you so much!
Thank you! Good luck with your applications

For year one student
Please dear help me with some notes
Hi. Similar to the person who wrote a comment 3 days ago, I am thinking of doing further maths AS level by self studying in year 13. I am currently nearing the end of year 12 with the options Maths, Bio and CS. My predicteds will be at worst 2 A stars and an A, but will most likely be 3 A stars. I understand that these grades are good, but from what ive seen online, no further maths = i probably wont get into a good uni such as warwick, kcl or UCL (oxbridge without further is apparently impossible) You mentioned in that other comment that the person should drop one of their A levels and do the full further maths a level in year 13. Do you think i can do that aswell? Im not sure how it would work - would i have to self study it, as my classmates would be doing year 2 content, or would i be joining the then-year 12s? Also, do you think i have a chance at the top unis with my A level choices? Sorry for all the questions. Ive been stressing alot due to me seriously regretting not picking FM
If you are already about to start Year 13, I would focus on spending this summer doing a maths course etc instead to boost your application rather than pciking up Further Maths. I know that kcl don't mind not having FM. Even if you pick up FM, you may not have a predicted grade for the subject for unis to see anyway and in my case, none of my offers included my potential AS FM grade.
Hey im currently thinking of taking Further Maths As in Year 13 whilst im currently in Year 12 alongside A levels Maths, Computer Science and Chemistry do you think that it would disadvantage me in not taking the full a level since i've already got Computer Science and am planning to apply to Oxford for Computer Science and Philosophy 😅😅
If you're planning to apply for Oxford with this course, I recommend swapping compsci or chemistry out with the full Further Maths A Level. I would also recommend either Philosophy AS if that's available, an EPQ or equivalent.
Hi you mentioned that admission officers will take into account your grades to your schools average. Do you know which universities do this as i cant find anything abt this online.
I know for sure Oxbridge does, I assume other unis do as well but it's probably less important there as the courses are less competitive. I got this information during events I attended back in Year 12 and don't have online sources per se.
@@codedbyjade Ok thank you! hopefully warwick does something similar...
When I first went into year 12 I had no idea what I wanted to do,I retook year 12 and changed 2 of my alevels yet again non of them were maths, now I’m half way through and realised I want to do computer science rather than a university degree I want to do a degree apprenticeship(or even a level 4/5) but seems like they also require maths and a stem subject,I’m currently doing economics, geography and psychology which very clearly does not link to cs
you're in year 12 so I would say it's not too late to pick up A Level maths if you can, it will take a bit of effort to do it in one year though
Could you make a video on how to create a good LinkedIn profile?
I could one day, but my main advice is to attend any company/network events you come across in school. For example, a lot of my network was built during Young Professionals and CS networking events which boosted my LinkedIn profile.
This was extremely helpful! Subscribed:)
what type of careers can you go into with coding?
The main career with coding is Software Engineering or anything similar
How can you take maths in a gap year? I might do this
You can do it privately or ask your old college/sixth form if they will let you take the exam. It's up to you whether you choose to self learn or get a tutor
Thanks so much for this
so I've bought these 3 books to start learning from the video. (I'm in my gap year) Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications Introduction to Linear Algebra Introduction to Algorithms Foundations of mathematics and computer science (john vince) 1) I have 3 days a week to learn this coupled with online programming courses. should I prioritise maths over programming? since it seems more difficult. 2) I have considered AS furthermaths, but I don't know if that is even worth it. I would rather just do these textbooks 3) should I just follow the order above?
Just to clarify, do you have 3 days a week for both programming and the textbooks or just for the textbooks?
Hi, I'm considering going to Cambridge for a computer science degree, I've already done some preparation on tmua but I havent had the opportunity to learn coding, I've learnt some supercurriculars liike PVSNP, the halting problem and the diffie helman key exchange/ RSA and have attended lectures/ taught myself Markov chains and also wish to talk about machine learning, but I'm not sure if this is too passive to speak about? Since I haven't done some active learning and I feel like it's too basic.
Hiyaa I checked and the gcse requirements for BSc Computer science at Nottingham and it seems to say you need at least a grade 5 in maths now
You're right, that has changed in the last 12 days
Is there a lot of physics involved in a CS degree?
Not really, there was one lecture relating to Physics (which could be understood if you have up to GCSE Physics) in my Computer Architecture class but that was it.
@@codedbyjade thanks, I wasn’t sure whether or not to chose physics or chemistry for alevel
What are all of your options?
@@codedbyjade maths, drama and I want a science
If you want to keep your options open, I recommend picking further maths as well as another science or drop drama as it's adds nothing to your application. If your sure you want to do CS I would pick further maths as your 3rd subject
Thank you for this video, definitely gonna try to apply these to get an internship for the summer coming up
is this relevant to a sixth former
Yes! I recommend you spend your free time: 1. Learning data structures and algorithms 2. Set up your github page to upload coding projects 3. Create a linkedin account That way, you will be well prepared to apply for spring weeks and summer internships in your first year of university.
@@codedbyjade when is the best time to apply for internships
September - Early December so right now!!
I changed from medicine to comp sci but I’m studying Chem bio and maths entering yr 13 is it possible to still get accepted into comp sci by good uni’s
Hi, maths A Level is the obly requirement for Computer Science at uni usually so you'll be fine. It'll be your predicted grades that matter
Hi im in the same position as you but in year 12. How did everything work out ?
my prayers have been answered
Hey Jade, have you found your area of passion you want to focus on?
It's not 100% certain as I've just finished first year but I'm currently interested in machine learning and backend development.
@@codedbyjade those two skills would be highly in demand in the future, great choice imo. did you do anything over the summer? please make more videos, you have so much to offer I believe, would love a video on what to focus on, how much time spent on uni work and personal project and what you should prioritise to make sure you come out of your degree with not only the best grade but also be employable.
I definitely will be making more videos from now on, now that I've had a year to settle into uni and the topics you mentioned will feature in these. This summer I've been prepping summer 2023 internships but I won't be discussing my personal story about that until Spring next year but my next video will be on networking and how to get opportunities.
@@codedbyjade awesome news! looking forward to the videos!
Hey what’s the real difference between computer sci and software engineering and which do you think is better
Hi, Software Engineering is a lot more practical and focuses on industrial skills whereas Computer Science dives deeper into theoretical topics such as the theory of computation and computer architecture as two examples. Both offer programming modules but Computer Sciences talks more about the nuances of each language (i.e. how its compiler manages memory) and software engineering focuses more towards you mastering a programming language/ web framework and project management. As for which is better, it really depends on what you want out of the degree. I chose Computer Science bc I was interested in the theoretical aspects and planned to learn the practical aspect via internships. If you don't want to do a lot of maths / more interested in the practical aspects, I would opt for Software engineering otherwise Computer Science is a better fit. I hope this answered your question and let me know if you have any more.
Thanks . Also for Ai building and other topics wouldn’t comp sci be better
Yes, definitely
I really need your help! I'm going to get a new laptop. IT HAS TO BE FANLESS! I can't stand noise! would the base model macbook air 13inch with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage be enough for my computer science degree? alot of people are saying get 16GB ram but I'm really scared of the cost if I upgrade. I should be fine with just the base model? it already is expensive
By base do you mean the m1 model? Sorry I'm not super familiar with macs. I would say if you can get the 16gb so you don't have to upgrade later but if you're worried about costs the 8gb should be fine, I've been using an i3 8gb ram 128 gb ssd with no problems so far
@@codedbyjade thanks Jade, i've thought more about this and decided to worry about funds later! 16GB would last me longer without having to worry about it. I can't stand fan noise so would not accept a windows machine full stop! How are you doing? did you do an internship over the summer? miss your videos
I'm glad I could help! I'm doing well, I've been preparing for the 2023 internship application season so I've been busy in that sense but they'll be videos coming out more regularly now
@@codedbyjade so awesome to hear that! I wish you get what you want! your such a hard worker! what part of computer science do you think you'll enter once graduated?
How did you integrate Computerphile into your personal statement
Hi, I didn't mention them just used their videos to broaden my knowledge of fields in Computer Science
Could you make a video for those who did not do a level maths (like myself) im going into year 13
I'll add it to my list!
@@codedbyjade Thank you because I feel really stuck for options in terms of university
@@docgraal485 if you want to apply to any top universities for computer science (imperial, UCL, Warwick, Oxbridge, etc) you should strongly consider taking A level maths (and further maths if possible).
@@zed_118 i know that and, as I said, I did not pick it and i’m going into year 13
Don't worry about, the video is out tomorrow to help :)
this is great, looking forward to seeing more episodes!
how r u?. CodedByJade-like,amazing -:))
I'm only starting to look at Comp Sci now, do you think I have enough time to do activites to make my personal statement competitive? A levels are Maths, Further maths, Physics. Predicted A*A*A*. I was thinking of reading 2-3 books from oxford's reading list, teach myself to code while doing a few projects and make a reinforcement learning bot if I have enough time once I've learned to code. This means I'll probably be working 6 hours a day when combining TMUA prep however I'm worried I won't have enough super curriculars as the only super curricular I've already done is STEM SMART phase 1 & 2.
I would say TMUA -> learn to code -> reinforcement learning bot in terms of priority. I assume you have a strong maths ability so I would look into mathematical topics such as the thoery of computation, ml algorithms etc and read some books on the side, noting what you have gained from them and how they made you more interested in CompSci
@@codedbyjade Ok. thanks
Hello , just finished y12 , A* in mocks for maths physics and computer science , are there any extra admissions tests that Manchester need ?
You can check on their website for clarification
I gonna start M&CS at University of Bristol this september, so I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Congrats!! See you there
Hey, I am at end of year 12 and considering doing computer science at university. My a levels are Computer Science, Biology and Electronics. My question is without picking maths as an a level choice will it affect my application to uni?
It definitely will. Math is the most important subject when it comes to computer science. Almost all unis require math
As @Tobi said, not having at least A Level maths will stop you to applying to many of the top universities for Computer Science and some of the top even implicitly require Further Maths as well. However there are unis that don't require maths. The university of Nottingham or university of Leicester first come to mind
@@codedbyjade what do you think of computer science and mathematics as a course rather than just computer science? Is It worth it?
It depends on the career path you want to take really, do you have an idea so I can guide you further?
@@codedbyjade well I don't have a rigid career path but I'm thinking of doing something with AI and machine learning
Hey, great video! Particularly, I like how clear and detailed your explanations are as well as the depth of knowledge you have surrounding this entire process. I'm a junior in HS at the moment, so learning more about programming at uni was pretty cool. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching!
@@codedbyjade No problem!
im gonna start uni in september, so this is great :) i've already started off with C, learning memory management, linked lists, hashtables, recursion etc. but i don't really know when I'm ever gonna use such a low level language. it was very fun regardless. Do you recommend that i learn discrete maths, and further maths, during my summer? can you also make a video on the year 1 maths in comp sci?
If you're looking for C project ideas I would recommend having a look online for project ideas, here is an example of a C implementation I made a few weeks ago (github.com/jade-bejide/2D-Cellular-Automata). The RUclips channel jdh also has a few cool C projects. Over the summer for discrete maths I recommend the book "Discrete mathematics and its applications" by K. Rosen and watching 3Blue1Brown's Video Series on Linear Algebra. I'll add that video idea to the pipeline :)
Is CIE a level IT, math and Econ a good combination for studying computer science
I would recommend doing A Level Computer Science as opposed to IT
@@codedbyjade my school doesn’t offer CS
Do they offer further maths or physics?
@@codedbyjade they offer physics but I’ve already picked the combination, should I change it
It's difficult to give a definitive answer. The general advice would be if you want to increase the competitiveness of your application then switch to physics or further maths but that doesn't always guarantee a successful application. I recommend having a look at the unis you want to apply to and see their requirements.
its stuck when i check =
Hi, I'm not quite sure what you mean
Nice one!🙏
hey jade how is the course going? when will you make a new video? I'm starting Computer Science in september in Southampton!
Congratulations on your offer! I plan on resuming regular video content mid June
@@codedbyjade thanks Jade, looking forward to your updates! hope your exam / prep are going well.

your videos are really helpful and informative, thank you.
I LOVED your tutorial. It was really helpful to me and let me understood how guizero works and basics of developing an interactive GUI. I also checked your code on github and noticed you added some more operations, like indices, which I added to and it worked perfectly. One little detail maybe for the code in github, I would add comments of what does each function do or explaining some variables, but apart from that, it's great. Greetings from Argentina!
Thanks for watching :) Yeah I will definitely add that to my todo list, this video was a little while ago before I got to understand the importance of code documentation. Thanks for you input
Hey, I am currently at the end of year 12 and considering studying comp sci or software engineering at uni. I am doing Chemistry Maths and Physics at A level. My question is will it be possible for me to apply to uni without an A level in computer science/will I be at a disadvantage?
It depends. Sometimes universities reduce offers if you do have Computer Science A Level. The most important thing is to know how to code and understand the basic Computer Science principles and demonstrate your understanding in your personal statement
Do you have to do computer science GCSE to do computer science A level?
No but it would help narrow the learning curve
Thank you so much for a great content, I'm also going to study M&CS @Bristol
Congrats! Let me know if you have any questions
im considering self studying a level maths (im in year 12) and working on further maths modules in my gap year. do you think its possible and have any advice?
Hi, what makes you not want to study maths in school, is it not available?
algorithm brought me here, this seems promising and i really hope to increase my grades by taking these tips into account
hi. I am a doctor (pediatric Intensivist in India). My daughter got offer from 1-University of Sheffield for MSc in advance computer science and also 2- from Queen Mary university for MSc in computer science She also 3- got offer for MSc in Artificial Intelligence from Royal Halloway university near London and 4- MSc in computer science from university of Liverpool . Can you guide whether to choose Sheffield because it’s ranked higher and my cousin stays in Sheffield with his family so would be safer for my daughter ? Or choose Queen Mary because it’s in London and that will have advantage of getting jobs and brand London ? Or shall we choose Royal Holloway, although not from Russel group, it’s ranked 32 in computer science in UKGuardian ranking. Or choose Liverpool because , compared to Sheffield it may have more exposure to industries. Which may help for internships and jobs Please guide.
Hi, I would say Sheffield is the best out of these 4, with Liverpool next, with London uni's, it's not just about the proximity to London and jobs there, employers perfer certain unis (i.e. UCL) so there is not too much of an advantage is choosing Queen Mary/Royal Holloway
@@codedbyjade Thanks a lot. We have decided to go for university of Sheffield.
