Way back in 2000, we started a tradition of unique stage entrances for the annual Back-to-School kick-off event. Although there were many others, people still talk about the day the Superintendent rode a motorcycle onto the stage. Quality is low due to its VHS origins; however, the enthusiasm of the audience was high! Thanks to all involved in making these events memorable, inspiring, and fun.

    You didn't state how to CLOSE the door, does the power to the actuator just reverse the action? How do you know the state of the door if the last action failed? Does the door close under the weight of gravity? Has the dog learnt to jump up and pull the string to open the door?

    • @rayreitz
      @rayreitz День назад

      Good questions. The combination of the actuator and the power relay in this setup just switches the action of the actuator on each activation through the smart plug. The schedule on the Alexa app or manual activations on the Alexa app actually just power on and off the actuator causing the door to open or close. You have keen insights into the physical nature of these plastic doors. They can get stuck if they are not positioned correctly. To reduce the likelihood of this happening, I sprayed the door channel with silicone. This helps it slide evenly. The door does depend on gravity to drop in my setup. I did add an extra layer of wood at the bottom of the door to give it more weight and stability. Our dog doesn’t have any interest in fiddling with the rope; however, I can see that this could be an issue with younger dogs. To address the gravity and dog meddling issues, you could install using the more typical setup - placing the actuator directly above the door and using the arm of the actuator to pull and push the door.

      @@rayreitz Was a fun project to watch, thank you for sharing it :) Thank you so much for the in-depth reply, I was also wondering if you needed some kind of lubricant for the door to drop smoothly and whether the door is weighted, so thanks for mentioning. I was also wondering without knowing the layout of your house would not a simple door on an exterior wall have been easier or is that simply not possible in your home. Does your dog sleep in the tunnel at all, when you close the door remotely how do you ensure that your dog is inside the house and not in the tunnel etc. I would love to see additional functionality such as some kind of NFC on the dogs collar or motion sensor so you know for sure if the dog has passed haha.

    • @rayreitz
      @rayreitz День назад

      @@markylon Glad you enjoyed the project. Most exterior walls were in areas that were not conducive to putting a hole in the wall. This dog doesn't spend any time in the tunnel. We had a previous Corgi that did like to get away from the commotion of kids and sleep in the coolness of the tunnel. Your question concerning how we would know if the dog was inside when we closed the door - This was a concern. So, we placed a Blink camera on the dog door. If we are gone, I can set this to record a short clip of her entry and exit. I can look at the last record to determine her whereabouts. You are correct in that there are many more technologically sophisticated automated dog doors that you can purchase with NFC tags and other features. If I was to start from scratch, this is the way to go. This video shows a DIY and low cost way to put some of this functionality in an existing door. 😀

      @rayreitz haha one more question did you have to train the dog to use the tunnel 😂😂

    This video was posted on several Facebook sites. Thank you all for the hundreds of comments describing the impact Walter had on your life and the community. I'll share a selection of these that came in just yesterday below. Thank you again for your support and caring over a lifetime of music. MR: An inspiration to so many of us. PD: Rest in Peace Mr. Reitz...I learned so much from you, and appreciate the opportunities you gave me, which are some of the most special memories of my life! He was irreplaceable at Amherst, a legend...my deepest condolences to his family! JR: Your dad has been the musical inspiration for many on this site and many thousands of others. RIP, Walter. MW: Walter shared the gift of music with so many, many people over the years. So blessed to have known him and studied under him! MGK: What a wonderful man and what great things he accomplished at Amherst!!! PBF: My condolences to you and your family. I loved your Dad and will be forever grateful for having had him as my teacher. He certainly touched the hearts of all who met him. May he rest peacefully in the loving arms of God. SRS: Your dad was a big part of my time at Amherst. I played violin and no matter how bad I played he would always encourage me. The musicals each year were high on my hit parade. Walter was so great. Our condolences to you and your family. SC: My last visit with him was just shortly before his death, and although thinner and frailer, he still had that old twinkle in his eye, and his quick wit was still there. I am grateful to have experienced his talent, humor and love of music from the time I was about 7, through the Red Blazer Variety Shows, our stellar Operettas, The Big Sings, and the most recent All-School Reunion, where he directed a song or two - I felt like I was back in Acapella. What a remarkable life he led.... EK: How many people get to live a life where they leave such a lasting legacy, touching so many lives in a positive way? He will be remembered with great warmth and fondness by all of his students at Amherst. BM: Your father will be keenly missed by many. He had a profound influence on so many people and touched the lives of so many. My sincere condolences and sympathy to you and your entire family! LBK: Your dad was a mentor to me, always offering me opportunities and encouragement. Music education, and performing are still my career, because of his influence. I also loved the picture from "Carousel" you included. (50 years ago this February!) Sending my sympathies to you and your whole family. MK: So many talented people came through room 602. He was an inspiration to many and brought great joy to many hearts. CB: Wow. What a tremendous loss for you, the world, and especially the Kingdom of Music! My heart goes out to you, losing such a tremendous man. Having said that, I can say that my own heart is filled with gratitude that God allowed me, for a few short years, to be 'under the influence' of Walter Reitz! Thinking back on those years, I realize how proud I was, and still am, to have been one his students. He was so much more than just a teacher or impresario or music administrator! He was an almost irresistible force, passionately and lovingly drawing out the best, not only from his students, but his entire milieu. Yes, his standards were high, for he had a vision for the huge potential in everyone around him, and an ability to help you see it as well. How hard we worked to please him, yet doing so, we found that we were well pleased with ourselves in the doing! What an incredible man! Thank you, God, for giving us the gift of Walter Reitz! YM: Such a nice man and his wife was just a sweet heart I took care of her at beechwood she was so sweet the patient that touches ur heart and u never forget she was the librarian at Amherst schools she told me her favorite book was to kill a mocking bird she told me stories how she loved her husband and children so much her husband would visit every day and he was so gentle with her the love was so real well now they will be together again it was a blessing for me to be acquainted with them both. KK: The acappella choir and the yearly musicals made my high school years. I was in Oklahoma, Music Man, and Brigadoon in the mie-60s. Your dad charmed all of us. He will be missed. ML: He lived a full life, and touched so many of us. Rest in peace Mr. Reitz. I think of him when I watch Mr. Holland's Opus. CSG: He impacted the lives of so many young people in a very positive way, including mine. Godspeed Dr Reitz. I hear "Alleluia" in my mind! LPR: My sympathies to you and your family. He was a legend at ACHS. We were blessed to have him with us two summers ago to conduct at the 85th all school reunion! He touched many lives! LPF: I'm sorry for your loss! He was a wonderful man who made such a difference in the lives of others! TD: Wow, what memories he brings back, solo singing, school play, great teacher, great person. TS: Your Dad was larger than life and was loved and admired even by those, like me, who knew him only slightly. Deepest condolences (and thanks for posting this wonderful tribute!) JBT: Thank you for posting the video. He certainly made an impact on my life and contributed so much to the Amherst community. JR: Blessings to you and your family at the passing of one of the Giants of our youth. DS: Not just our youth, Life long. JR: You are right, giants of our youth are at the underpinnings of who we are for the rest of our lives. Walter, for me, is foundational. How fortunate we were to be able to share him for so long..... PM: We will sincerely miss him. Walter Reitz was a great and devoted teacher who gave so much of himself to Amherst Central High and its students for so many years in music and choral education, musical productions, the Amherst Male Glee Club and the Shriners. One of my all time favorite teachers, an inspiration to us all, and a role model for teachers. God bless and keep Walter Reitz and his family! SP: I have many, many wonderful memories of him - he was a terrific teacher and coach. choirs.....and it all started with his support! Thank you for letting us know. Keeping you and yours in prayer at this difficult time. BB: He was very kind to me as I played "rock and folk" music and although that wasn't his thing he still took an interest... I'll never forget the day I brought in Jimi Hendrix for class listening... the first four bars of "purple haze" had not played before he ran out of his office in complete disarray wondering what just happened... when he found out it was "music" he was completely flabbergasted..., it was a moment in musical comedy that Dick Van Dyke would have been proud of... RIP KH: A man of high standards and great integrity; he taught us all a lot more than music... LM: What a fulfilling, inspirational life he led! PW: What a truly talented man who contributed greatly to Amherst. He will be missed. MJRC: Mr Reitz helped to shape my life through music. His vision and tireless work with us, hopeless and clueless high school students, showed us endless possibility. What a wonderful man. NSB: Such a wonderful teacher and role model for a life well lived. TE: A special man with a special talent of introducing and teaching his students the beautiful world of music. Sure impacted my life. PH: Wow. All those notes he heard on earth. And now he's shaking up those angelic choirs. EBR: My life has been richer because he shared his love of music with such enthusiasm and passion. Thank you, Mr. Reitz. DLA: A remarkable man, he now has choirs of angels to direct! Will always remember being in those memorable operettas. JPR: He was the best of the best! So incredibly fortunate to have had him as a teacher and mentor. I will never forget his kindness.
