How Smoky Can You Make a Cocktail? | In The Drink
Просмотров 40021 день назад
Frankly, I'm sick and tired of being offered a 'smoky' cocktail in a bar, only to be given some blended scotch or weak-as-hell mezcal diluted with bland ingredients that don't contribute to the overall flavour profile. Today, I have sought to answer the source of my own gripes. I have taken some heavily peated scotch whisky, and some pungent mezcal, and endeavoured to push the REAL limit as to ...
The New Best Cocktail Gin | James Gin | In The Drink

23 years on the road with Top Gear and The Grand Tour has finally come to an end. To mark the occasion, I'm reviewing James May's gin, which has only continued to grow in popularity since its launch in 2021, by putting it through its paces with two essential cocktails. Dunno what I'll do without Clarkson, Hammond, and May on my TV anymore. Their car antics have truly been a staple of my life si...
What Do North Koreans Drink? And a Kim Jong Cocktail | In The Drink

With all the resources North Korea expends projecting a false outside view of what their country is like to outsiders, its no wonder the facade doesn't hold up to scrutiny, as there's nothing left for the millions of people trapped there. However, what is made there is apparently some absolutely fantastic beer, and some crappy soju with a hilarious propaganda video I found on RUclips that no-on...
The Ancient Roman Cocktail that Jesus Drank on the Cross (yes, really) | In The Drink

To make a cocktail, you must take alcohol, then sweeten it, flavour it, and dilute it. That's essentially what the Ancient Roman equivalent to Gatorade is: Posca! By taking soured wine and adding honey, spices, salt, and water, posca kept legions of Roman soldiers and workers hydrated all over the empire. Arguably the most famous man to supposedly drink posca was none other than Mr. Jesus H. Ch...
The Bizarre World of Japanese Cocktails | In The Drink

Having long been fascinated with the unique style, flair, and culture around Japanese high-end bars, I've taken the plunge into an attempt at displaying how the dichotomy of Japanese city life influences their approach to cocktails and mixology, which can often feel contradictory, yet works incredibly well. Sci-Fi Cocktails and How To Make Them | In The Drink

I promise this isn't a Star Trek episode. Ever wondered what it takes to make a genuine, impressive science-fiction cocktail that works within its setting? No? Just me? Anyway, the aim of this video is to demonstrate that, like tiki, science-fiction cocktails and bars have the full potential to stand out as their own thing (and kind of already do), and to be successful in doing that, there are ...
France in a Glass: a Cocktail with French Spirits, Liqueurs, and History | In The Drink

Our wonderful French neighbours have been exporting some of the greatest wines, spirits, liqueurs, and history in Europe for hundreds of years. As it happens, I quite like all of those things, so it seemed fitting to to come up with a cocktail that would give me an excuse to talk about all of the aforementioned, as well as run a small experiment to see just how many different spirits and liqueu...
Making the Old Fashioned(s) of Mad Men | In The Drink

Mad Men: to most, a phenomenal TV show with the most consistently brilliant character work to ever grace our screens, and made to such a high standard so that it will likely never age. To bartenders? The show that revived the Old Fashioned cocktail, and played a crucial part in glamorising and popularising mixed drinks for years to come. I can't even begin to think how many of these I've made i...

Ah, the cocktail, an invention so uniquely American that when the first bars outside of the USA that served mixed drinks opened, they were typically called "American bars", advertising the sale of '"American drinks". Making Compound V and Temp V Cocktails from THE BOYS | In The Drink

Season 4 of The Boys has just wrapped up, and the tension has never been higher, the satire more biting, and the budget for bonuses paid to male actors in 'a state of undress' more bloated. Whilst this newest season has experienced its weaknesses, notably in its muzzling of Homelander and the propensity to 'tread water', as it were, I still thoroughly enjoyed the heavy-handed approach to the sa...

During a recent trip to Mallorca I was able to bring back with me a selection of local ingredients that I knew would work fantastically together in a cocktail, and having been quite moved by the pleas and protests against over-tourism from locals on the Balaeric Islands, I wanted to display first and foremost the region's produce, history, and resultant culture, rather than the floating resort ...

Indiana Jones Cocktail - The Golden Idol! | In The Drink
Have you ever considered doing a video about your local spirits? I’ve always been curious how tastes vary from country to country
Fun fact most Lapsang sold in China today isn't smokey in the taste since they devloped a kind that is made with the same process but don't let it touch the tea. Think it was invented in Tong Mu Guan by the Wuyi mountain the home of many of Chinas most famous teas. The unsmoked kind is beautiful as it is woody without smoke, vanilla, caramel and longan in the tasting notes.
Oh wow that actually sounds kinda great - I bet that would make a phenomenal syrup in its own right…
I'm seeing other creators, with established, successful channels hit the same wall. Seems that around January of this year something changed, maybe a greater emphasis on shorts vs longer content. I'm sorry you got caught in it. I've enjoyed your work and gotten several good drink recipes and inspirations from your videos. Good luck with whatever comes next.
You’re very kind! But honestly, the fact alone that I’ve been able to reach and entertain even some people out there is fulfilling enough! I think most people know now how much of a game of chance this all is, which is why I make sure I’m always doing it for fun first!
Really high quality video! Very informative great stuff
You’re a gent and a scholar 🫡
while you may have already done this, I feel like you could see some engagement more through possibly doing more short form on various platforms. i mean you certainly have the charisma, experience and video production that I have seen works countless times for others. anyways, praying you see the growth you deserve soon, I'm looking forward to more videos hopefully :)
That’s so kind! I’ve considered trying to advertise, as it were, via shorts, reels, etc…but at the end of the day, all I could want is for the videos to simply speak for themselves, I think that’s the most natural way to grow!
Such a shame about the lack of growth. It's quite telling that some of the really big drinks channels have sort of stopped doing proper cocktail-making now, and just keep chasing the algorithms with silly stuff like "Look, I tasted this gross thing! Urgh!", or "Let's make the worst cocktail possible! Lol!" It instantly makes me unsubscribe, but clearly the masses lap up that stuff (just like they lap up the fake versions of the pornstar martini, I guess). I really hope you find a way around it, I think your content is great personally!
That’s very kind of you to say! Hopefully as long as I keep making the stuff I really enjoy, some more people will find my videos, but I’m very much looking forward to making these videos better in any way I can without bowing to oversaturated trends
Great video mate. You’ve earned a sub from me. I’ve never seen this drink here in Australia, but you’ve inspired me to try making it for myself.
You’re a gent! Definitely worth a shot, I’m pretty sure you can get it in Aus, but not sure they have the same approach to it that British bars do!
I really hope you gain popularity. This level of high quality content deserves credit
You’re too kind! I think at this point it’s a waiting game for the RUclips algorithm to show my videos to the right people…
Appreciate ya, man.
🫡
Makes you wonder why they just wouldn't lead with this...? It's so good! And easy?
Was really surprised how doing it this way was such a win-win…hopefully more people pick up on it!
Great video mate , glad to see the OG recipe being used. Even in Australia you see it on bar menus with lime or pineapple juice added . I use this same OG recipe when i do events in my mobile bar.
Glad there’s people out there that appreciate this recipe! I’ve always tried to use it wherever possible when I get behind the bar, but it’s at the point now where some people think you’ve made it wrong when you use this recipe and ask for it made again!
I’ve had this drink, made my Joe, and it is phenomenal 👌
Forgot to mention, I simply add a dash or 2 of vanilla essence to my jigger and top it to 30 ml of vodka. It works very well. Nick from York
Hi Joe, well made. I have made this for myself back in 2020. Not since! My Ghanaian son in law wanted to try it andbI made it for him. I make my own passion fruit syrup, mainly for the Saturn cocktail. I simply strain out the juice from 3 or 4 passion fruit, add a dash or 3 of simple syrup and top up with Wray & Nephew OP rum as a preservative. As, Saturn after Saturn weeks apart, reduce the level, I add anotherb1 or 2 passion fruit strained juices and a modicum of rum. Passion fruit syrup and or Passoa does go in some other drinks. But so few I have had my Passoa bottle for at least 3 years. I suggest you try a Saturn with your bottle of the PF purée. Nick from York
Ooh I love a Saturn! One of my favourite tiki cocktails, and I do need to get through that bottle of purée…thanks for reminding me of it!
Failure to grow is unfortunately just an element of what RUclips is now, there are a lot of people on the platform... like, A LOT, and the biggest fish hold the most eyeballs until the algorithm randomly sends people to you out of nowhere. I mean, that's how I found you, I had looked up cocktails from Bartender and a few days later you were in my recs. Every creator I've ever seen has said growth is mostly slow with some massive jumps at times, and repeat engagement is very hard to count on, sadly.
I’ve heard that a lot! Whilst I try to check any delusions of grandeur as they crop up, I still think it could be an indicator that I have a lot of room for improvement. I appreciate your words mate, helping to keep it grounded 💪🏼
@@InTheDrinkJoe I greatly appreciate the work you do on your channel - it is extremely high quality. I understand your frustrations, but the algorithm is a fickle thing. I do think you can break through. Thank you and keep your chin high!
@@PatrickJaszewski you’re a gent and a scholar 🫡 Your words mean a lot
Very nice! I love smoky drinks. My go to is smoky scotch sour with olives
Oh that sounds good - bet the saltiness from the olives works super well with the smoke 👌🏼
@@InTheDrinkJoe does indeed
Love the editing and effects on the video
Thanks! Really trying to make an effort so glad to know it’s appreciated
RIP to that bottle of ango!
Never felt betrayal quite like it; also forced me to burn the rest of the mezcal too 😭
Great drinks, great video, fantastic set, keep it up Joe!

Excellent show Joe. Very interesting too. Nick from York
Glad you enjoyed Nick!
The close-ups look particularly good on this one! And the music choice really brings the second half to life!
They were on to something in the 70s with the rock they were making then, y’know?
@@InTheDrinkJoe well they were definitely ON something, the ‘to’ in that sentence is entirely optional
wonderful
You’re a gent and a scholar 🫡
Sir, thank you for this video. ( checking in from Oklahoma) I've been " experimenting " with a cocktail smoker and looking for both tips and cocktails that I can use it. I'm a " sucker " for Scotch and Scotch cocktails as well as bourbon and rye and always seeking different cocktails to add smoke to them. Great AND informative video... here in the region i live in we have Mesquite, Pecan, Maple and Hickory as well as walnut, apple and peach wood available.
Thank you for the kind words! Adding smoke to any whisk(e)y cocktail is never gonna be a bad thing! I'd be curious to see how the syrup I used here would pair with a rye...fairly well I'd imagine! Cheers!
@@InTheDrinkJoe i bet it would be delicious!
Hi Joe, I made this last week. Same Cachaca, but I used simple syrup rather than granulated sugar. I agree it is a very nice drink. Nick from York
It’s so simple yet so perfect, I love it! Try it with the granulated sugar sometime, it adds an element of texture and gets sweeter as you drink - really changes it up a bit, making it a more interesting experience - cheers!
I really like the look of the Tiberius Sour :)
It turned out so good!
You have such an enchanting screen presence, I cannot begin to imagine how you have not gone viral yet. I would love an episode on/including homemade spiced rum as the store-bought stuff is quite poor. Anyhoo, you are making wonderfully heartfelt and informative content on a site where there's less of those things each day, keep at it!
Wow, that’s such a kind thing to say, and it’s so enormously appreciated…I really can only hope to continue to get better! As for spiced rum, that’s a great idea! I do have many gripes with, and am generally opposed to the idea of the commercially available stuff, especially when making it at home is not that difficult and can actually be good and interesting….definitely worth going in to!
Great video! Wondering how different the recipe would be for a soldier or sailors punch (non affluent punch)?
Would definitely use water in place of tea, and probably just put the citrus peels right into the bowl with some sugar as they wouldn’t be prepping oleo-saccharum in advance
@@InTheDrinkJoe I’ll give it a try for something fun at a rev war event that has an authentic vibe even if it’s not 100% accurate! Thanks!
I wanted to comment because I'm not a cocktail drinker, but I watch a lot of explainer/craftsman types of videos (for example, wood craft, despite not being a wood worker). I love your presentation style and very much enjoy your videos. Keep doing what you're doing. :)
You’re too kind! I’m so glad you enjoyed it and I only hope to get better from here!
Hi Joe, good show. I keep vodka in the freezer to drink with cured fish alongside a cold glass of lager and crispbread. I have tried keeping gin and blended whisky in the freezer too but found only that it did not come across with its full flavour. Nick from York
Damn frozen vodka and cured fish sounds actually incredible I’m not gonna lie - might have to adopt that practice…although I must say I’m partial to frozen gin poured over a very lightly muddled grapefruit slice
Speed. Power. GIN.
It really do be like that sometimes
Great video! Youre tempting me to go spend way too much to get the ingredients for the egg drop lol I also love that Japanese bartenders wipe the bottle after pours. My bottles would be a lot less crusty if i did that...
It’s such a weird cocktail but I won’t lie, a VERY acquired taste… And I know lol, I really should start bc I’d save so much time cleaning bottles that look gross before filming
great video!
Thanks man!

This content is actually amazing
Means a lot Mr. Gigachad, sir 🫡
very underrated channel
You’re a gent and a scholar, I appreciate you saying so!
I've not seen the video in question but my guess is he serves them in cups for serving matcha as they are usually clay and sorta look like clay sake cups or unglazed tea cups but larger.
That seems eminently more plausible - dang wish I’d caught that! Good eye
That looks exactly on point. I wasn’t gonna try this, but now I’m having second thoughts! LoL
Give in to temptation…it’s worth it
I thought I had stumbled upon a large food-history channel like Max Miller's because of the extremely good quality of the video. It wasn't until halfway through it that I realized it came from a smaller content creator. Sir, I guarantee you'll blow up at any second, I have seen this before many times, the algorithm is usually a bit slow to get started, but when it does, you'll be everywhere.
Man that really means the world to hear that, you’re a gent and a scholar, I appreciate the comment 🫡
Holy shit how do you have only just over 1k subs lol, your content is great
That’s very kind! I reckon I deserve at least 1.2k 🤔
Wild, as a catholic the sponge soaked in vinegar was taught to me as a taunt towards Jesus, when it actually was an act of piety.
Oh fascinating! Yeah I can see how presenting that aspect (vinegar) could work towards this idea of Jesus as being maligned beyond reason after he’d already been nailed to the cross. Not being a religious man, I missed that interpretation entirely, thank you for sharing!
I love Hakushu 12 and I love Benromach 10, but I wouldn't call them similar to one another except on paper. Can't see how you can go wrong with either one, neat or in a cocktail, but you will have a different experience for sure! (Benromach is dirty in the best possible way, Hakushu is clean in the ... also best possible way.) Enjoyed this episode, even if I am the kind of Western curmudgeon who wants a $25 cocktail for his $25, not a $10 cocktail and a $15 show.
Ooh thanks for the input - glad there’s someone here who has had both and can attest to perceived similarities between the two whiskies! And I definitely agree with you on the price/showiness front
I've been a bartender for a few years and I've never seen anyone hold a jigger like that before (between the index and middle fingers). Is that some kind of special technique?
Just feels comfortable for me - especially when working quickly with speed-pours. Gives me good precision! Worth a try
Is it shaken? Stirred? Because it really makes a difference, said my old close friend of mine who somehow keeps on ditching me in a bar for some reason i do not know.
caipirinha on a hot summer day is the best
Hi Joe, verym8nteresting, but if the Scottish honey couldn’t kill the acidity then it would certainly have been unpalatable! Nick from York
Yeah it was almost impossible to gauge how acidic to make my vinegar without the time to do it myself (2 weeks!)
So the world’s 1st cocktail?
That’s reserved for my video on the ancient Sumerians, a cocktail I’m calling the Sumerian Sunset
@@InTheDrinkJoe Interesting.
