Saving Akela (Ep 02) Dealing with the first problems
Просмотров 9 тыс.4 месяца назад
In this video I will be talking about dealing with the first problems, for example winter damages and so on. Sorry for the lag of quality in this video, some of the footage is recorded just with my phone. I will try not to forget my camera as often in the future. :) Insta: janniklukat_boatbuilding Amazon Wishlist: www.amazon.de/hz/wishlist/ls/5GHYW75Y60F6?ref_=wl_share

Absolut exzellente Arbeit, Bootsbau vom allerfeinsten, eine Kunst mit Kopf, Herz und viel Wissen. Perfekte Material - Auswahl - Oberflächen Bearbeitung - Lackierung +++ Top Design ! Danke fürs Video. Beste Grüße aus der Pfalz..
Hey Jannik weiter so! Grüße von Lennard und Björn!
So viel Liebe zum Handwerk...einfach klasse !
Herzlichen Dank!
ruclips.net/video/4FhTu3aGM60/видео.html Ihr Boot ist noch jung. Ich habe dieses Projekt fünf Jahre lang beobachtet, zwei Jahre nachdem es begonnen hatte.
Hi Jannik, I am interested in your rebuild. You have found a very beautiful hull, indeed. I wonder if you might not leave the fibreglass cover around the hull. If you glass it over from the inside aswell, you could keep the old hull as a woodcore. In which case you could just leave the broken frames as they are. Just an idea. Anyway I hope you manage to complete the rebuild. Let us know how we can contribute. A presto
Well done Jannik, taking on this rebuild. You have the backing of many Utubers who will follow your progress. I wish you good luck.
thank you👍
Moses sandals PLEASE STOP THE STUPID MUSIC....
Just leave out the music. Would be wonderful!
Met een goede instelling en wat plannen komt het vanzelf wel goed🎉
👍
Good to see you start on the tearout. She will look a lot worse before she looks better but just keep doing it in bits. It all helps toward the end goal.

😅jop, Frohe Weihnachten
I will be following you next year. Have a great Christmas break, Jannik. gary in japan.
thanks, merry christmas to you too
Are you going to attempt steam bent frames or opt for wooden laminated frames with epoxy?
probably laminated
Na endlich geht es weiter!
If i remember correct, sy Tuiga(D3, a william five resto) had her deck done in pine.
I don't know about where you are, but here in Norway people replace their teak front doors for something more modern. Good source of teak up to about 2m long and about 5cm thick. Have a look on your second-hand marketplace online, builders yards, whatever...
good idea, thanks for the tipp, norway isn´t that far away. i will look into it.
Forget about teak decks. Restoring what's left of your decks require you to purchase even more teak to complete the decks. Start from scratch and look for cheaper alternatives like Iroko (which is still pretty expensive). If you are going to source the wood locally (Europe) you could go for birch or larch or maybe spruce if you are going for varnished decks. Everything is possible, but it comes down to your personal preferences and economy. Your audience doesn´t care much about your personal problems, but it would be interesting to hear what your actual plans for the boat are. After 3 episodes you haven´t made that clear at all?? You talk about the original layout and don´t show any original photos? You talk about "restoring" the fiberglass??, and fixing the engine (who cares at this point in time)?? If you are not going to strip the glass, I doubt the restoration will be worth your time and money, but it´s your boat and your money. In any case you need to decide on the wood and source the wood before doing anything else. Freshly sourced wood needs time to dry and will be ready in 2 years time when you need it. My last advice, try to work on your screen appearance. If you don´t come across enthusiastic about the project in your videos, the viewer certainly will not either... Good luck
the fiberglass will be strip 100%, i will talk about plans in the future, this year has been hard and exhausting, so i didn´t quite had the time to plan everything out, and my mind was occupied with other stuff. i also don´t have a workshop at the moment. so i just have to wait till everything is sorted. waiting being the hardest part at the moment. but thanks for your concerns and i hope i can keep you interested in future episodes.
Turn it into a weekend - flush decked vintage racer. The cabin is to cramped for comfort anyway..
had the idea too, seeing her flush like this.
I am looking forward to seeing a proper craftsman working on a beautiful boat instead of a diyer bodging their way through. Will you have to replace or repair the cracked frames?
Well if he doesn´t it´s not much of a restoration? (One heavy wave slamming in cross bow and you have a foot wide hole in the hull)
i will replace them, maybe even the one´s still intact.
@belledetector I'm fully aware of that. I was interested in which direction he was intending to go, repair or replace.
Great to see another episode from you and Akila. I bet you both feel better for having that plywood removed 😎. Be Well 🙏
absolutely, thank you
Man, she looks a hell of a lot better with those stupid house side/ monolithic cockpit combings off of there! Keep up the good work, merry Christmas and cheers from a guy doing the same thing on the other side of the Atlantic!
thanks, and merry christmas to you too :)
Some people just don't have any sense of proportion, do they? Lots of work here but you're the man for it. Thank you for this and Happy Holidays to you..
happy holidays to you too :)
As the owner of an old wooden boat with teak decks you might consider laying a layer of plywood then planing the teak you have both sides and gluing it to the plywood with epoxy. Then you will have a good looking deck which will give you a sure footing and no leaks.
that's exactly what I have in mind.
VW ABA engine?
maybe, i will have to look further into it.
Starkes und spannendes Projekt.. Viel Glück, Kraft und helfende Hände!
Danke :D
I was just wondering yesterday when we would see another video! Keep 'em coming!
Greetings from Frankfurt. I have a good feeling that you are going to make good progress on the restoration next year. Good luck and Frohe Weinachten. I'll be watching for the next episode.
danke und auch dir frohe weihnachten.
Enjoyed watching. Looking forward to future videos,
What a fabulous boat. Hats off to you for taking it on. In the 1960s my father had a Robert Clark designed twenty five foot day cruising yacht. Lovely lines but very wet in bad weather.
Love you're work,some serious skills
She is a really beautiful boat, looking forward to seeing your progress on her!
I followed the entire construction of Tally Ho, but they had a whole team of workers and that took years.
A new build would be much better to do. That boat is ruined besauce of the classed hull.
It was disheartening to see the moisture coming out of the hull when you drilled holes in it. But I enjoyed your beautiful catboat, and was surprised to see such a group of them sailing together.
An amazing build! Thank you so much for sharing.
Pleasing on the eye your boat is sir. What a magnificent hull those lines are delicious
Congratulations on your certificate, I look forward to seeing your skills and knowledge applies to further beautify Akela 🙏
I am looking forward to seeing how you bring Akela back to life. If your master piece is anything to go by, she is going to be beautiful.
I will be following (and liking) from Japan. All the best gary
Thanks for the update - life is life and you're clearly determined :) Enjoy the process and i look forward to seeing more of Akela in the future. Cheers!
Nice to see you back. dont hesitate to present also those cat boats.
It seems to me that there are two possibilities. Remove all the fiberglass and rebuild Akela as it was originally. That was the choice made with Tally-Ho. Eric Tabarly, on a Fife design, Pen Duick 1, chose to laminate the hull to preserve its lines. Then he dismantled the frames and planks, reinstalled the frames inside the fiberglass hull, and rebuilt the interior. The result still today earns admiration for the lines of this legendary boat at classic yacht gatherings. Since Akela's hull is already fiberglassed, it seems to me this is a solution to consider for controlling costs. What is your opinion?
An another three years project... great!!!😊
Like your sailng videos.. and waiting 4 next update.. slow is good.. !
Keep posting. Even if it's only short video updates. We'll see if we can get you more views, subscribers, and maybe some youtube money. The butterfly is beautiful!
Thx for the update. Enjoyed the catboat segment. I bought my first catboat last season and loving it.
Good to see an update. Your butterfly hatch looks great! Drilling holes through the hull and that wretched fiberglass sheathing and seeing the water drain out goes to show what a stupid, short-sighted idea glassing a traditional wooden hull really is. Looking forward to seeing how you go about removing that garbage and to seeing what lies beneath. I will say, on the bright side, the wood is probably so waterlogged that the glass is likely mostly delaminated and should come off fairly easily.
Looking forward to future video.
Zdolny człowiek.Gratulacje wykonania. Piękna łódka.
Wonderful stuff. I applaud your enthusiasm, and yes get rid that awful f/glass. Beautiful boat, will be checking in on progress periodically.
