Sam Hollis - Sayonara Space Cowboyo
This ten minute short film is essentially my goodbye (for now) to music. I'm currently focusing on my book and my work in other creative fields, the drive for music simply isn't there as much as it used to be. But this is all me just splashed into one big music video.

I'm back to tell you all I'm releasing my final(?) two songs; the project's name is: SAYONARA SPACE COWBOYO. It will be out early January (date still pending). The Akira Experience - Video Essay
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
Akira has quickly become one of my favourite films and there's so much to talk about regarding it's contents, so I thought I'd give this a go. This took me a very long time to edit, I really hope you enjoy it. Remember, it's not an entirely serious video essay, there are some goofs and gaffs. I had a lot of fun with the whole thing! Nitpicking The Flash in 'Zack Snyder's Justice League'
Просмотров 2583 года назад
People seem to think I was being serious about not listening to DC fans when they try to convince me it’s good. The whole video is just some light hearted jokes, please don’t take this too seriously, it’s not a video essay like some of my other videos. I gave Zack Snyder's Justice League a 6/10 in my last video when I mentioned it briefly, so I thought I'd provide some reasons without giving a ...

I'm 2 mins in to this essay and although this is now a two year old video I just heard something very refreshing. Moondays big ups my friend! :D for knowing the difference between a synopsis (as you put it recap) and an essay (or for that matter retrospective), so many times I've seen what claims to be an essay (reptrospective, deepdive etc) and is literally just a summary of plot. Don't get me wrong here I'll watch the recap bit interested to see what jumps out to you as important enough to recap, just really nice to see there's more than just being told the plot of a film I've seen...again haha.

Just a tip: spending half the video calling yourself dumb doesn't make viewers excited to hear you out. You're not SUPPOSED to get all 3 billion interpretations of the film because they were made by millions of different people with different experiences. Just focus on explaining your personal point of view and everything will be better.

What I love about 'Only Yesterday' is the relationship of young Taeko and adult Taeko and how the latter has been shaped by the experiences of the former. This is not something you see in most movies but it is true for all of us. Another great Ghibli film you will enjoy is 'Whisper of the Heart' which is a touching love story between two young people. Other favorites include 'Spirited Away', 'My Neighbor Totoro' and 'Grave of the Fireflies' which is incredibly sad. All these are honest and show true human emotion.

I really appreciate this vid!! And totally feel you with how personal and emotional the film is.. I recently rematched this after seeing the description and noticing Taeko and I were the same age and the movie hit so hard without ever being overly emotional or disingenuine.. I love the more quiet, personal narratives of Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart & From up on poppy hill so much 🥺

Spot on! The second time I watched this movie was also when I felt super lonely. I was missing my friends so badly. This movie is a masterpiece and is criminally underrated and I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried watching it. The way they depicted her childhood scenes were very authentic, like u said, it makes u wanna give her younger self a hug. I would so recommend Tales of Princess Kaguya (please watch it if u haven't yet). It moved me just as much as Only Yesterday did.

this movie hits a lot to me since it had too many expectations on women but also even as a kid her family isn't always supportive when she needed it, and it hurts her future a lot. there are some moments that reminds me of my childhood.

I don't feel like no-face's greed comes from obssession, since what he feels for chihiro or whoever will treat him with respect and love is longing, for he is lonely. But another thing about no-face is that he's the personification of "When in Rome, do as Romas do", and the greed becomes from getting into the bath house and starting to offer more things for more people that are inherently greedy; the staff and yubaba. As soon as he is out there he starts behaving nicely again, and minutes before he was feasting up on people becoming a literal monster

Maybe we love superheroes because we think about how it would be if we were one of them. I personally think about them the most when I struggle in real life so they help me escape from it. I can form my own reality inside my head, a world where I have superpowers, a world where I have everything under control, a world where I can be as cool as them, a world where I am loved and wanted?

Thank you for your spontaneous insightful review. Only Yesterday is the most favourite to me of all SG's films as well. I never thought that a male would enjoy such a film :) For some reason I thought it was a bit of a 'girlish' film. For that reason, I have always been hesitant to recommend it to a male! I like the fact that you picked on silence in this film and the way in which it contributed to it. What you said was very true... each time silence occurred, the subsequent segments of the dialogue were accentuated! PS: Are there any websites that stream this film with English subtitles?
