Ever since I was a kid, I couldn't imagine what it was like to have a favourite song. When I was a child, and my parents would have their friends over for dinner, they'd turn on their playlist, set it to the loudest volume they could, and just dance away. I never understood what was going on. I could never understand why they were dancing. To me, it wasn't fun. I couldn't feel the beat. I couldn't hear the melody. I have been deaf ever since I was born. I think, and feel, and see like everybody else. And yet, my classmates always looked at me with pitying eyes. I was never a person. I was always the retard. A fragile, stupid caricature of myself, merely a shadow in my seat. I was desperate. I wanted to be regarded at the same level as any other person. I wanted to untangle my headphones so that I could listen to music. I wanted to dance with my family. I wanted to hear how the world sounded around me. A gentle breath, or the loud hum of an airplane. A year ago, I finally had my chance. I was offered a type of surgery that could fix my hearing. I could finally experience my life to the fullest. So like an idiot, I gladly threw myself into the opportunity. I could hear. I could finally hear peoples' voices around me. I could hear the song on the radio. I could hear my parents chattering on the phone. The howling of the wind. The rustling of the grass. My own footsteps. I could suddenly listen to things I never could have imagined having sounds. It was amazing. I was happy. I was finally fulfilled in life. Listening to this song, the melody, the beat and the lyrics, just hearing it made me know, I definitely made the right decision.
