Building the first Atomic Bomb: Manhattan Project - Part 2
December 7th 1941, Japan starts the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Unites States of America finds itself ingulfed in war in a matter of days aganst both Japan and Germany. By that point the entire scientific community was well aware of the potential applications of a nuclear fission chain reaction, and the Allies were all well aware that the Germans had a massive head start in the development of an Atomic weapon. The race for the bomb was on. During the course of the war every single major Axis and Allied power would start their own nuclear weapon programme, but in the end only one came to be successful.
The American industrial complex would prove to be the only one advanced enough to realiz...

Although celebrated by some as a liberator, and branded as a tyrant by others, the fact remains that Che was and still is an icon of the 20th century. But that raises the question why Che, what makes him such a c...

Why was Napoleon exiled and not executed?
Просмотров 1,2 млн3 года назад
Napoleon Bonaparte, thought to be one of the most influential and polarizing men in history, was, after his abdication in 1814 and again in 1815, exiled rather than executed. One might wonder why? On the surface the monarchies of Europe did have their reasons to do so. After all he was the man who sought to bring the British economy to its knees, implementing the so called Continental system, t...

Napoleon’s fate after his defeat at Waterloo was quite different from what we might expect today. Despite being a dictator, he had a significant following among the French people. When he returned to Paris after Waterloo, he was forced to abdicate the French throne once more. Instead of executing him, the British decided to exile him. Here’s why: Recognition as Emperor: Britain had recognized Napoleon as the Emperor of France for several years and even enjoyed a short-lived peace with France during that time. Avoiding Monarch Execution: Executing a monarch, especially when you’re a monarchy yourself, was considered a bad idea. The Congress of Vienna, which decided Napoleon’s fate, wanted to avoid making him a martyr. They chose exile over execution1. Implications for France: The Congress of Vienna was conscious of how Napoleon’s legacy would impact France, which had recently emerged from the Revolutionary Spirit of the 1790s. Exiling him seemed like a better option2. In the end, Napoleon was sent to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he spent the rest of his days in exile3. So, rather than meeting the fate of other dictators, he lived out his life far from the European continent. Quite a different outcome from what we might expect

Because they were civilized human beings? "Just killing" people isn't actually a very upstanding way for people who claim to be worthy of running the planet to behave. Why did this question even need to be outright asked? To put this in a modern context, I think it's absolutely essential that Vladimir Putin be removed from power in Russia - that needs to be a primary goal of the West. But I don't advocate EXECUTING him. That shouldn't be necessary. Of course in his case exile isn't really on the table - he's actually committed crimes and is subject to arrest in the west. My hope for him is that he spend the rest of his life in prison somewhere. The inhumanity he's perpetrated on the Ukrainian people (and others, but they're front and center at the moment) is inexcusable.

In the Bible, when David was fleeing from King Saul, he had a chance to kill Saul when he found him asleep in a cave. David’s action of sparing Saul’s life created a precedent in Western civilization. 6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s anointed.” 7 With these words David restrained his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and went on his way. - 1 Samuel 24:6+7

Too powerful to execute. His death would have sparked a revolution, yeah, another one perhaps of the 1789 variety, not some Paris Commune, but a serious collapse of social norms and a power vacuum filled by some usurper or another, likely a former beloved military official who would deify Napoleon and make him the new martyr of France. Did the coalition want another French Revolution, hell no. I do not believe this had morals involved AT ALL. The fact he was given any troops or status at all shows this. It was to create a facade of respectability to avoid chaos. The coalitions barely won any battles directly against the man for nearly a decade, depending on what is considered based on scale etc. They could not send him to St. Helena off the bat. That would have equated to martyrdom

Nap was an Enigma, and you don't execute enigmas. The French Revolution changed society and Boney was the figurehead. It brought in a new scientific Revolution as well. His downfall was the invasion of Russia. He should have stopped at consolidating What he had achieved for France, making it thesuoerpower if Europe. A complex character achieved a lot but threw it all away.
