This is our second Newfie we’ve found them to be exceptionally smart and loyal. Our first Newf we couldn’t keep him out of our pool and nearby lake. This guy we have now at 10 months age doesn’t want to get into the water although he loves getting hosed down

Another person who says that Dobermans were bred to be guard dogs. Not true! They were bred to be personal protection dogs. They want to guard you, not your Automobile.

Newfies are great 👍 . I have had 5, one at a time. To my knowledge the largest Newf was 300 lbs.and 6 foot long. It lived 8 years.

I love this breed. If I had a property where I had lots of outdoor space with waterfront, I’d have one asap. They are amazing in temperament and affection. I wish the drooling wasn’t such a common factor but love anyway.

You got most of the facts right about these wonderful dogs, but, really, you must try working on your pronunciation of their name. Like the island they hail from, the name is uttered thusly; "Newf~In~ Land". You must say it as one word and say it quickly. It should always rhyme with "understand". As in, understand Newfoundland. Also, it's important to know that these dogs were not "bred". When Europeans first arrived here in the late 1500's, the dog was already present. In latter years, the breed was "refined" in Britain. Our other dog, the Labrador retriever, was created by blending Newfoundland's with a (now extinct), dog called the St. John's Water dog. This was done to create a short coated and slimmer version of the Newfoundland that would allow fishermen to pull the animal over the side of a small boat. For their first century of existence, these dogs were known as the Lessor Newfoundland. Only becoming known as the Labrador Retriever when a British naval officer station here realized how popular they would be with sportsmen in the UK. He thought naming them the Labrador would make them sound exotic. Guess that worked as for many years the Lab. was the most popular dog in many countries..

DO NOT GET A MALINOIS. 99 out of a 100 of you are not prepared for the work, time and training these dogs need. Do not do the breed a disservice.

I have a 2 yr old Landseer. She works as a nursing home therapy dog. With just 1 hr training, she learned the 2 commands, 1) Touch, 2) Give love. When elderly are in a hospital bed, the newfie is tall enough to touch the patient's hand on the bed. With the commands, my dog can kiss/lick or just touch the hand of a patient. This always brings a smile. In my mind, Newfoundland dogs are angels wrapped in warm fur. She's the sweetest, most loving dog I've ever seen or owned. She also visits children. When the kids run to her, she lays on her side, tongue hanging out and waits for the kids to lay on her and hug her big head. I believe this is when she's the happiest. A newfoundland dog can bring most men or women to tears from the love and joy they bring. They do take a LOT of grooming and I vacuum often. But this is a dog who deserves every second of the effort.

Socialisation CAN be done when a dog is older, but it takes a LOT of baby steps, and a LOT of patience. We adopted a Belgian Malinois mix who I think wasn't socialised well. It's taken over a year to get her to the point where she's comfortable with people (and I tell them not to pet her) and cars. We're working on the dog socialisation.

Just picked ours up 3 days ago and couldn't ask for a better puppy, 8 weeks automatically took to the leash or glued to me walking either way ill take it lol, no accidents yet and let's us know when he needs to go, super cuddler, definitely lucky for 8 week year old

I have 3 females, 5, 7 and 12yrs, all 3 black. The 2 younger girls were both rescued after being puppymill breeders @5&6 yrs. We have had eldest since she was 18mos and she has been an incredible mentor for her sisters helping them to discover how to live in a family as both were totally new to being pets. Day we brought middle girl home, she jumped straight up when the TV in the living room was turned on in terror! She hid in corner for ages and was afraid to enter kitchen. This is the girl who won't move out of kitchen when I am cooking in hopes of receiving a goody off of the cutting board. We have had her for almost 2 years now and she is at home as any dog and very social now when we are out and about. Eldest taught her how to swim last summer and now she sees a body of water, and she is ready to go! Youngest we have had 9 months and she is a total good. Only thing she is hesitant about is, ironically, swimming. She will have to have our old lady show her how much fun it is as now she struggles to wade. I will have to take my daughter's paddleboard out for a lesson. It took me being way out either in the sea or a lake to get older girls proficient. I have had many breeds as well as mixed and have never had such a loving and devoted animal as these wonderful dogs. Yes, they shed constantly, one has drool 24 hours a day and all three want to be wherever you are about to place your foot but I will never have another breed. My eldest is my best friend and protector and our youngsters are in love with my husband now that he is retired, has a pocketful of treats and is always willing to take someone for a ride. We have a mutt who belongs to my daughter with us as well who weighs about half what they do and they all eat the same amount so don't let the food Bill's scare you from having this wonderful breed in your life. If an immaculate home and an easy groom are your requirements, the Newfoundland is not for you.

My favorite breed

I am 76 old grandmother who has owned multiple male Dobies. My current Dobie is a red 1 year old European male. I run him 2 miles, twice day, with my golf cart. He is sweet, loving and very smart! However anyone who owns a strong, powerful dog, regardless of the breed, has a responsibility to socialize and train their animal. My 95 lb Dobie is a MUCH BETTER neighbor than the 2 mini Aussies down the street, who bark constantly and charge everyone who passes by. People are shocked that someone my age has such a well behaved and powerful dog. He is amazing company and I feel very safe and secure in his presence becuse we have spent time training every day since he was 8 weeks old.❤

I have had 4. My last one was diagnosed with miastienagravis (sp) and was given six months to live. I modified her dosages for her medication and she lived to 13 years old.

My 5lb Pom is a true gift from God. Adorable, sweet, well behaved, highly intelligent and so cuddly. I am so lucky to have the perfect little companion dog on planet earth.

Brushing every day instead of 2-3 times a week is much better. Bathe your dog when it starts to smell bad or look dirty. All you need to clean ears is a paper towel wiped around the inside of the ear. Don't use any liquid unless they're told to do so by a vet. Brush teeth without any type of pet toothpaste. Pet toothpaste is not needed on dogs or cats. Teach your GSD to put up with nail trimming while it is a puppy. Some dogs do have ticklish feet.
