Sounds like it’s a disadvantage to do well on the first half of the digital SAT. How can test scores be compared if the tests aren’t all the same? If you get slotted into taking the harder second half are your answers weighted to reflect the difficulty? It sounds patently unfair and biased. This is a train wreck. As a parent I’m disturbed and appalled that this would be used in the admissions process

Great question! It's actually an anvantage to do well on the first half, because for each section (Reading-Grammar and Math), students put in the higher adaptive portion can max out at 800 points (a full score), but students in the "easier" adaptive portion have a max of 600. (So a student who does really well in both the first portion of reading-grammar and first portion of math could get 1600; a student who gets placed in the easier second part would have a ceiling of 1200 total.) College Board will be using a system based on Item Response Theory (IRT) to scale the exams. Instead of each question being worth 1 "raw point" (as before), harder questions will be worth more. However, students will not be told which questions are weighted more.

Thanks for talking to the 97% of kids who won’t be going to an Ivy or other highly selective college. Not everyone is going to have leadership roles, 1500+ SATs, and a 4.5 GPA with an internship with a Nobel Laureate. Real world answers for real students is so appreciated!

Thanks for watching, Sarah, and glad the info was helpful! We totally agree -- kids need advice not focused solely on the highly-selectives. Best of luck!

Thanks for posting this. I don't believe Ms. Lopez' comments - race is used by Stanford as a nearly singular factor with more importance than basically any other aspect of an applicant. This assessment is based on direct evidence from admissions results at a school in one of the states in Ms. Lopez' geographic coverage. Multiple Asian Americans with absolutely stellar everything were rejected (Top grades, research, music awards, visual arts awards, presidential scholar semifinalists, National Merit Scholars, high achieving sports accomplishments, AP scholars, probably LGBTQ). One Native American student with everything appearing to be solid but nothing that would indicate Stanford level (good courses but not in top 20% grades, no mention of any College Board recognition, no posted individual awards related to the school, average sports career, upper middle class/not FGLI) was accepted. Stanford indicated support for Harvard in the Supreme Court case - and some of the most telling statistics are from the admissions rates by race. See table 4 www.hoover.org/sites/default/files/racialpref.pdf Between students with the same academic decile ranking, African American applicants were admitted at rates 4x to 10x the rate of Asian applicants. Stanford appears to have taken the same approach in their actual decisions, but unlike Harvard, Stanford publicly states that "Academic Excellence is the primary criterion" for admissions and likewise differentiates academics as "Very Important" while ranking race/ethnic status at the lower "Considered" status in the Common Data Set (Harvard technically lists all aspects as "Considered"). Stanford is not abiding by their posted admissions criteria - shame on them and shame on Ms. Lopez for continuing a false narrative.

This appears to have caught Stanford's attention. Shortly after the original comment was posted, Stanford admitted an (amazing) Asian American in Ms. Lopez' geographic region from the waitlist. Considering that last year only 8 students were admitted off the Stanford waitlist, it seems unlikely to be a coincidence.
