The first 1996 Toonies were anything but durable. The centers would keep popping out. Plus you could throw them against the floor and easily bend them.
I swear on my grandmother’s life that I’ve 100% had one of these toonies in my hand before I got into coin collecting and realized how valuable it was.
Same thing happened to me. I thought it was a counterfeit so I spent it quickly as possible. Then I looked it up on the internet.
Was the finish the only way to differentiate the German planchettes from the rest? Were the material compositions the same? Very cool history there!
Hey Luke. Composition same for both Planchets. Outer ring: 100% nickel, Core: 92% copper, 6% aluminum and 2% nickel. The German planchet 1996 2-dollar coins have lines across the ring with a dull/matte finish.
