I went to my first kmart and remember it was an eerie feeling.

Maybe Kmart locations were too closely located. All the ones by me became self storage centers. The Taco Bell in Kmart Plaza is still owned by TransformCo LLC. I blame Eddie Lampert for their failure. Did stock buy backs instead of reinvesting in their stores. He said they were never going to be a Bloomingdales. Kmart locations were Sears firewood in my opinion. Two S reears locations did reopen recently in CA & WA so maybe they will reopen locations because I hear they are sitting on 500 empty stores that no one wants to buy.

My dad brother and I had fun owning and running Cigar Emporium for 11 years before my dad retired. ‘04-‘15. Fellow store owners always looked for each other. Always interesting people coming and going. Even gave discounts to the construction guys building the movie theater back then on drinks and cigarillos. Miss our business.

If I had the money, I would turn the mall into a living quarters! Every store gets turned into an apartment/penthouse. Reopen the food court. More than enough parking for the renters and their visitors.

The only way Kmart(and Sears) would have survived longer would have been for Edward Lampert to have never gone near either of them.

I had a store in that mall for 20 years. still believe it is a big mistake to demolish the Mall. The Mall is already there. all they need to do is just to sell it to Amazon that can move her store from Army Trail in to the Mall and make maybe a small warehouse from one of the department stores and invest some money in it to get stores back to the Mall. It is a beautiful Mall that got killed from bad management and too much opening hours that killed most of the business. All Malls MUST close one day a week and close on Holidays plus short the business hours. I am pretty sure this Mall will come back to life. we live in a cold city that required a closed shopping Mall esp. in the Winter and Christmas season. working with the same old thinking that Malls have to be open 11 hours is absolute wrong. Plus the Village has to stop allowing building Plazas around the Mall to kill it. It was a big mistake building that Plaza on Gary and Shick and the same for the Plaza where Best buy is. I am willing to come back and reopen my store there if they get more stores and security back to it.

When I lived in the area we went to that Kmart I think there is only one store left in that little mall Dollar Tree !!!

My local super k mart has been left untouched for 10+ years now. It seems NOBODY wants to buy the vacant real estate. I see so many possibilities but nobody wants to move anything. I'll end up buying it & doing something with it

Oh my gosh, you too?! At my local Kmart, there was always swarms of seagulls just hanging out. It's so bizarre! What about Kmart that just attracts seagulls? 🤣

I made a mistake in the video with the time frame of filming. It was over a year after filming between the time the store closed to when I filmed in April 2019. Another correction is that the store opened in Oct of 2013.

They could have done so much more. Bloomingdale already has a bunch of strip malls within three miles of each other. It's ALLLLLL RESTAURANTS AND MIXED USE AND MORE STORES but there is no third place anymore for citizens. They could have saved it. Right now, Fox Valley Mall in Naperville is booming and SAVED itself from sinking after COVID by INVITING SMALL BUSINESSES to popup shows every weekend! Now Everytime I walk in there it's full of life. Both from huge retailers but also from small business owners who are just happy to get a place to sell their products physically and safely.

Probably just a matter of time before Southlake Mall in Merrillville Closes. Then you'll get a chance to document that one!

Shocking! I used to work there also! 2005-2006.. They hired me to work in Outdoor Lawn & Garden, showed me a 5 minute long forklift training tape, and had me get in a forklift.. knocked the back gate to Lawn & Garden over, and plowed through those cement yellow barrier things.. Fired! lol

It's still up as of 05/03/2024. Only the east side of the Plaza has been demolished. This Plaza was built in 1977. It was a very nice Plaza for a l9ng time. When the Tornado hit it around 2007/2008 it went down hill from that point on.

"Great video!!!" 🤗❤️🤗❤️🤗❤️ I live in now in Rockford, Illinois I moved here withy husband and now 32 year old twin son's in 2007 I had lived in Elgin, Illinois for the past 21 years since I was born and raised in Chicago and when I lived in in Elgin in my early 20s and working at the Eagle Food I used to go to this mall before I met my husband and my 32 year old twin sons were born. I would go to this mal and go trick or treating I even but my first Enya album at the Musicland after I got my first check working at the Eagle as a bagger and after I met my husband and I even trick or treated at the mall when I was pregnant with my twins as a clown and when my twins where young I was dressed up as a shower for Halloween and I entered the contest and I won the costume judging contest and I got a gift certificate for KB Toys and I remember getting my boys and I the Nintendo 64 Game System with the certificate I had won and during the fire safety event in the mid 90s I remember my twin sons who were 6 years old at the time also got their name in the local newspaper paper. I had great memories of this mall even when my best from that had past away 9 years ago in 2015 had a great time at the mall when she used to visit me too. My twins are on their own now and my twin is in the us army living with his wife and my 4 year old grandson in Pyeongtaek, Korea and they're be coming back here to the states to live in the fall in North Carolina on the base and he misses this mall like when I told his twin brother about they closed up. Plus and my I remember when my twin son almost gotten lost in the mall twin young teenagers found him at the center court and I also I remember in October of 2011 I found $11.00 dollars at the mall too. I wanted to get to visit it last year but my 2014 Kia Soul got stolen by the Kia theft ring I got my car back but the insurance tolled my car and is sitting in my garage waiting to be fixed. I now have a 2011 Ford Escape but the alternator causes the car the stop for a second but if I knew it was going out of business I would filled the car up with gas and took my twin son from is apartment and we would have visited it just like when I just found out about Stratford Square Mall even though I never visited that mall. I had found memories of Spring Hill Mall and I so hope that really bad company know as Kohan does something with it but we all know when Kohan buys something they let it sit and a this New York firm is probably not going to do anything for the mall too and thats so sad. ☹️☹️☹️

Perfectly said ! As I walked around the mall a few weeks ago I had tears I. My eyes thinking this would be torn down. I even heard it would cost $30 million to tear it down 😡 I also saw a ad recently that Macys was opening another location in Bloomingdale ! I don’t understand why they would build a outdoor mall when we have a cold winter here. There should be tax breaks for retailers to come back there. I don’t llive in Bloomingdale but hope the taxpayers have a say in this because I think they would say what you just said . Thanks for the video.

The village “might” be able to get funds from the state for demo and economic development once they show the mall is fully vacant and ready. They might also have a developer or two waiting to propose redevelopment. This will probably involve large contract approvals, tax abatements and other incentives for this fancy new multi use blended development and co-ownership. The mall looks really nice. Malls are dying, but a sound structure and proper utilities already in place means there is almost no reason to demo…. Unless someone is getting paid along with their “business partners”. 💰
