Only 5 distinct DnB genres you need to know: Jungle, Jump Up, Dark/Neurofunk, Ambient and Liquid. Rest is just being pedantic (forget techstep, darkstep, hardstep, jazzstep, breakcore, raggacore, minimalist, atmospheric, deep dnb, intelligent, drumfunk, sambass, drill 'n' bass etc - you just sound boring). Here's definitions with examples showing the progression of the sub-genres and how they crossover sub-genres Jungle - deep basslines, syncopated percussive loops, often ragga sound e.g Original Nuttah (UK Apachi), Super Duppy Man (Chase & Status), Gotta Get Next To You (Jahganaut) Jump Up - cheesy heavy basslines, energetic e.g Superman (Aphrodite), Mr Happy (Hazard), Look Out (AMC) Dark/Neurofunk - distorted bass lines, stabby synths, darker sound e.g Alien Girl (Ed Rush & Optical), Arrakis (Black Sun Empire), Collision 2023 (Audio) Ambient - stripped down, smooth, chill out style e.g Atlantis (LTJ Bukem), Danny's Song (PFM), Dawn Aquarium (Luxi) Liquid - melodic, often vocals e.g Shake you Body (Shy FX), Return of Forever (High Contrast), Somebody Else (King of the Rollers) In this video: 0.20 Jungle 0.27 Jump up 0.40 Jump up 1.11 Jump up 1.38 Dark/Neurofunk 2.11 Dark/Neurofunk 2.44 Dark/Neurofunk 3.00 Dark/Neurofunk 3.11 Ambient 3.29 Liquid
I think jumpup and foghorn are what really ruined the genre. Any kid can just throw together a soulless generic song and somehow it does numbers. Miss the atmospheric and soulful aspect of stuff from like Goldie, DIllinja, LTJ, Peshay, etc
actually does not make any difference. I am a musician and producer - try to listen to this cue not with the ears of a dnb fanatic but as a general listener. All 9 "genres" will end up as a featureless noise blob - "tub-thup--tubthup with noisy sfx", regardless of "subgenre". This is actually the main reason why drum and bass died. One of the most unable to develop, unable to comply music subgenres which can become utterly _boring_ even during this 4-minute clip. Tub-thup, tubthup. Tub-thup, tubthup. It is like every rock song wanted to sound _exactly_ like Back in black :)
Whats the technical difference between Dark DnB and Neurofunk? For me Neurofunk is already as dark as DnB gets in mood and intensity. I used them interchangingly.
where is liquid…? the most common also the mix of neurofunk and minimalistic. jungle and breakbeat <3 the beginning of DnB, also dark vibes are great. but i doubt they are all called that. some artists i listen to: GLXY, Gerra & Stone, Phace, Xilent (very old stuff 2009 - 2010 i guess), Icicle, Audio, Magnetude, Rawtekk, Gydra, Phaction…
Your ideas of subgenres aren't quite on the spot mate. Let me explain. Your jungle example is soooo far from what traditional and modern jungle actually is. Your examples for Jumpup however technically correct, shows me that you listing "Tour" as one of the example songs means you have only skimmed the very top of the DNB iceberg. Tour is literally a meme in the dnb community, if you was at the afters or had the aux in your mates car and put that on you would be fu*king violated by everyone. The example you showed for "hardcore", (which btw isn't even a proper name for a dnb subgenre) what you just showed there was Neuro/TechStep but a bit more low-key and also kinda had more of a Dancefloor BPM. The one you showed for Neurofunk isn't even Neuro, that's more techstep than Neuro (not crazy far off tho) And the one you showed for "Dark" (which is a pretty dead genre if you are trying to refer to "DarkCore") is straight up Neuro. Like that is undoubtedly Neurofunk. The second song example (Memory Lane) you gave for Minimalist, isn't Minimalist dnb, that's Dancefloor. You also missed out some veryyy honourable mentions like liquid DNB & Rollers, which has so many elements from different subgenres it makes it such a good all-rounder. It's good you're into your dnb mate, but your ideas on the subgenres (plus the fact you like the song Tour) shows me you gotta lot of learning to do buddy when it comes to all of this. If you want some song suggestions or just a playlist let me know, I have spent years and years going to UK (the home and origin of Drum&Bass) dnb festivals raves and literally THOUSANDS of hours listening to dnb, and constantly finding new music.
First song is Jump Up, not Jungle. The song you used as an example for Dark DnB is Neurofunk *Xerxes - Clock* is the wrong artist and song title. It's *Arise* by *Xtrah*
This vid somehow made it into my recommendations You kinda messed up in some parts like the song transitioning from darkstep to liquid DnB without saying what it is, missing out subgenres like hardstep, techstep, drumstep, breakcore and such since it's a 9 subgenres of DnB and you only showed the audience like 4 subgenres (cause from what I know classic does not count as a subgenre it's just a style of a subgenre that was outdated some would say like take Dubstep for example in the early 00s Dubstep was just actually dub with wubs and now Dubstep is just some robotic stuff in a lucid dream where it's all filled with colourful skies and colourful anime girls) . Also, Macky g might not be best explanation of jump up since jump up is not just some LFOed square bassline but other than that Good job in atleast making it ig
@@Briansimon2 well I mean breakcore was part of intelligent/ jungle until it became what it is today, idk I'm not really a dnb nerd (though I'd love to be one of those disgusting things) , I mostly prefer neurofunk, technoid, dark step, myself, that's why my explanation is ass when I made It
@@jurgensorrok5073 lol you kind of took the words out of my mouth on that. A few years ago at Sun City Music fest I spent an entire day at the high tech minimal/deep tech stage. It was wonkers. jungle fathered dnb

my favorite is dancefloor dnb
Neurofunk & jump up

Neurofunk has scifi vibes as for the Darkstep it is horror themed
