Crux DSW Build Part 4 - BUILT by Better Bolts
Welcome back to the 4th and final installment of the Crux DSW build series!
In this video we catch up with Thomas after he's had some time to put some miles in and see how many changes have been made to the initial setup as well as what he likes and dislikes about the build.
At the end of the video we discuss replacing the stock plastic bearing race with a metal one. The part number for that part is S122500007. The bearing race cannot be purchased separately unfortunately but it is included in this headset replacement for $29.99 USD. (Not sold by or affiliated with Better Bolts)

The provided ball bearing was a tad smaller than the original Fox, so I had to use the Fox ones to be able to get the clicking to feel
Would love to see this bike built with a cane creek invert fork, dropper, and the biggest tires it can fit!
Awesome series guys thanks ! Could u let me know if Easton cinch chainrings work with Sram's t type 12 speed chains ? 🙏🏻
great to follow this build! Last week I decided to build my DWS Crux at my local bike shop. Got my credit card and went all in with 1x13 XPLR. I think the SRAM Quarq Red Aero Powermeter front with SRAM X-SYNC. completes the Crux... Can you recommend this setup with a 48T chainring...?

Great set of videos, thank you. I’m about to build a Crux DSW albeit with GRX. I wanted a robust bike for summer gravel and winter cyclocross racing so the DSW seemed like a good idea as I still tend to crash a lot in CX racing. Full bike builds are definitely better value but it’s good fun spec’ing and buying all the bits. Thanks again. PS I went with 90s ski jacket pink and orange though. PPS will have to look out for the headset issue!
cracks?
Any chance you could share or post a link of the replacement headset part?
We just added this to the description of the video! Hope this helps!
Interesting building! Do you know the real weight of the Frame (difference to the Carbon Crux? (not SWorks))?
A carbon 10r Crux frame is 1.37kg (3lb, 0.3oz) and a Crux DSW frame comes in at 1.98kg (4lb, 5.8oz)
If you are from an mtb background, reaver back and ravanger front works super welI- would not get the ramblers for either F and R. If anything reaver front and back.
@@pieterdorrestein9286 great to know! We’ll try that setup out!
Yeah, such a tiny dropper (for that much money) is kinda useless (just go behind the seat). Other than that - killer bike, thumbs up
Totally agree. Being his first gravel bike coming from mountain we wanted to give him as many tools and features as possible to make it feel more similar to a mountain bike. After getting comfortable on the bike you begin to see how to get used to riding with the post up.
Great series. Thanks for sharing it all. I just bought a Crux DSW frame and I’m about to start on the build process so it was great for me to see this. I’ll be going with a slightly more road-oriented build. It was great to hear your comment on the flawed part of the headset in this final instalment. I’ll be keeping an eye on that.
did you get, which part exactly he used to replace the flawed part? Was it some FSA part?
I did my best to find this part on its own (I had a few laying around from past bikes) but it is contained in this kit here (S142500003). In the photo it is the item in the middle.
Very nice video. Could you maybe share which FSA part you used to solve the headset issue?

Not sure I'd have the patience for all the detail work, but it looks great! Also "Oh, bit of a nugget break, there" gave me a good laugh 😂
Still a good looking bike 👍🇬🇧
Thanks!
Started talking about rotating weight and I had to do a double take on when this video came out… but nice build 👍
Listening to you two geek out and talk about the build/upgrade decisions is all I want in a bike build video. Sick build too 🤙
So sick! Loved seeing the bolts being installed in the first vid, but I am glad this breakdown followed up.
Cobbler is going to be on the “dry” side this year. Dirt is going to be super prime.
Great to know! We’ve seen some video where it has looked like a complete mud bath. Just want to be prepared!
@ oh yeah it’s definitely been bad in the past! This year is going to be solid one 💪🏼
Jake commentary is great lol "not because im reach but because im financially irresponsible" lmaoo arent we all
Do you need to run a wide crankset to fit a 46t chainring or will it fit on a regular width crankset?
The Crux has a max chainring size of 46T on a standard width crankset.
Those are sick. Any plans for Rockshox caps??
@@HankRides these should be coming in the nearish future
@betterbolts looking forward to doing a better bolts conversion and upgrading to some Freedom Coast sram levers this year...this would be a great way to complete the build!
What is he cleaning?
At what part of the video? We were cleaning stuff throughout the whole video.
wicked wheels 🚲!!! i’m getting back into cycling after many years and like you I was in a car accident about two years ago, what would be a better choice of bikes specialize tarmac or Crux. based on having one bike and taking comfort into the equation as I don’t know how my neck/whiplash will be affected once i begin cycling again🙏🏽
@@andreagate542 the tarmac will definitely be the less comfortable option here. It’s a tough choice and these bikes are fairly different as they are for two different disciplines (gravel vs road) so it can be a little hard to decide. The Crux is going to be more versatile since you can ride it on the road as well as gravel. The Tarmac will put you in a more aero position and be considerably quicker on the road however it’s stiff frame will make sure you feel every bump. If comfort is a concern there are many other models in the specialized lineup that offer more comfort than either of these bikes just at the expense of speed and aerodynamics such as the diverge or roubaix.
@ Thanks for the takes!!!! I know a couple of y’all owned Athos’s in the past…. do you think that would be two flex for a former but older(52 with injuries) powerful athlete who is put comfort first then fast group rides?
@ we love the Aethos here. It’s definitely more forgiving than a tarmac. You won’t be able to take it off-road like the crux and you have a smaller tire clearance which can also take away some comfort. Personally I had an Aethos for a long time and I loved it but it has been replaced by my crux at this point. It’s nice having the freedom to ride both.
@ Many Thxs!!!!!
Sh!t, those 35mm bars look like they're 45mm😳😄
The background music makes this almost unwatchable.
2:43 What thread size do these caliper bolts have?
M5x32mm we have a product for these on the website as well as a new product (flat mount brake adapters) which we just released. They can both be found on our website by searching “flat mount”
Great day out there with you guys! Let's get another one planned!
So down! It was a blast having everyone by!
Is that pivot very good.wish buy frie bird
Looks good. I wish Pivot sold the frame only.
According to their website you can 🤷🏼♂️ but I also haven’t tried.
@ Thanks for this info! I'll check it out now.
@@JRudd good luck amigo! I love my Firebird

Bought a kit for my specialized What a waste of money that was
I have the same bike in the same colorway... difference is I love the color. My build is Float SL/34 stepcast (factory), hunt XC wheels, roval carbon seatpost and handlebars, XT brakes and drivetrain, NOS shimano pd-a600 pedals, NOS Lezynne Micro GPS C. Need to decide if I want to go to the roval wheels and what saddle and tires I want to finish it up.
how you removed paint from the bike ?
We sanded down the original paint with 180 and 240 grit sandpaper. We go over it in the video.
@@betterbolts yes i saw that just wanted to know paper grit. thanks for that. ALso you didnt sand it down till carbon layer, I am thanking to sand it down till carbon layer and then clear coat just carbon layer but then I am afraid of getting direct hit to carbon instead of paint layer chip off while accidents or crash.
@ scuffing the paint may earn you a better result rather than sanding all the way down to carbon as well as less possibility to sand too far. At the end of the day it’s up to you! We’re not professionals at frame painting so take our advice with a grain of salt.
That looks so sick. I need those
Where is the dropper lever?
It is paired to the shifters. If you hit them both at the same time it will actuate the dropper.
That sick
Nice video,i prefer natural Titanium finish but is it still PVD coated, how does UV affect titanium, its inert and reflects UV.
Our silver hardware is not PVD coated, it is raw titanium. By UV resistant we were referring to the coloring in the PVD coating. With anodizing it is very common for it to fade over time, that is not the case with PVD coating.
Hello, I have purchased the Rotor Bolts Kit and will be installing it soon. I'm relatively inexperienced. What's the reason for not unscrewing the old screws one by one and replacing them with new ones? Wouldn't this make the whole process more stable and easier to handle? The holes of the hub and brake disc would also already be exactly aligned. Thanks for the clarification.
You could do this if you wanted. You will just want to leave them loose until tightening them all together in a star pattern as shown in this video.
Цена хуя устройства?
Hayes dominion please🙏
I've tricked out two of my bikes with them. Hard tail MTB with gold, Trek Madone with copper. Just building a budget gravel bike, so Ti is off the table, unless it's free.
Once you go with Better bolts, you will quickly become annoyed with lower quality hardware and next thing you know you will have swapped all your bikes over and have a box full of spares and extras incase you need to do anything.
It’s true. Once you go Better Bolts, there’s no turning back.
Can’t wait to get my SL8 & Duraace kit
I love what you guys do but I'm curious why PVD instead of electro anodizing?
We will cover this in our video to come but PVD offers many benefits that anodizing does not. One of which being that electro anodizing affects the strength of the hardware.
Galling.
We will cover it in our next video about Titanium but with our hardware galling is much less of a concern. Our PVD coating on our hardware acts as a protective barrier for this. We have not had one complaint about galling in all our years. That being said it is always a god idea to take preventative measures like using thread locker and anti-seize to prevent this further.
I love Better Bolts! I also love all of my Freedom Coast gear!
No seat wedge bolt ?
Coming very soon!
Could you help me by telling me what size are those small rulimanes that come there?
Im coming from a Diverge alloy. Is the position on the Crux too aggressive? Is there a way to make the crux DSW little more long distance friendly for a 40yr old with a low back condition? Loved the video thanks
love it, i have several bikes I need to kit out. Be in touch.
Awesome! We're always happy to help.
