‘The Collapse of Complex Societies’ (1988) – A Book in Five Minutes, no.28
Ramblinactivist’s Videos, 2023/17, Strawberry Moon 2023.
Some books get a ‘reputation’ as a result of what people believe they say rather than on a detailed reading of the text. Just a word in the title - for example, ‘collapse’ - can be enough for commentators to invalidate their content without any appreciation of what they actually say.
To say that the book is about ‘collapse’, I believe, is wrong.
The focus of the evidence, gleaned from archaeological excavations, is not that ‘societies collapse’; clearly, all eventually will. The message is far more nuanced, relating not simply to resources, or war, but the role that ‘complexity’ has in both driving society’s growth and its ultimate col...

As I explain, those in the bottom-half of the affluence spectrum can expect to continue to work to retirement while experiencing chronic ill-health - with the poorest 10% working an average 14 years with chronic he...

One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, sixteen women from Ascott-under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire were made an example of by a system of power that sought to resist inevitable change. What does it tell us about Britain today? To mark the 150th anniversary, on the 21st of May 2023, this rather long piece explores a microcosm of local history: It’s long becau...

For some months the ‘specialist’ media have been tracking a major structural change in the world’s economy brought-on by the Ukraine War: Not the well-publicised crisis of food or energy prices; but of who controls the world’s financial payments system, and its use to enforce Western sanctions. The book introduces terms which define the boundaries of our ‘development problem’, and our inability to accep...

Ramblinactivist’s Videos, 2023/12, Flower Moon 2023. There’s a lot of noise about the forthcoming local elections, and changes to the voting system; but there’s little discussion about the crisis of ‘representation’ as a whole, and why it’s causing so many people not to vote at all. I feel very strongly that we should vote ‘for’ something, otherwise, you’re always choosing between the ‘lesser o...

It is not misunderstood by me. It is a means to work inside a free society outside moral boundaries. We are not free without first being moral. This book is dedicated to the devil very appropriately.
This is the vibe
I still believe in that old, battered dream, we are not too late, they were too early
Prediction or setting the framework for NetZero? Humanity really does have the technology for sustainable abundance for all, but control of the resources consolidated into fewer hands, and now they control the environmental movement which has become increasingly antihuman because the oligarchs want less people. They co-opted every influential ‘green’ movement so they can convince the plebeian activists to embrace austerity while the controllers live like royalty. The biggest tell is when billionaires like Gates and trillionaires like the King of England see eyes to eye with the liberals and progressives on de- growth and de- population ruclips.net/video/kkN-rvuU82w/видео.htmlsi=uYmLOKk_-tWqGCal
Thanks for this great review! Have you read Immoderate Greatness by Ophuls? His analysis builds upon the insights of Tainter and others. It's very succinct.
What nonsense. Kropotkin's work is just as shallow in 2024 as it was in its own time. Do something useful with your lives and study Marx.

Whoo-hoo! Sourdough narrative; this is SUCH a 2020s interpretation of anarchism. Middle class "lifestyle" baking, whilst the masses buy mass-produced sliced white bread. Love the irony.

Currently reading, Small is Possible - A factual account about who is doing what, where, to put into practice the ideas expressed in E. F. Schumacher's SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL by George McRobie I did a Permaculture Design Course last year. Will be looking for a block of land this year, to buy. Want to start putting theory into practice!
Nice intro. Well presented and explanatory. Went to your website, looked around, back to youtube, watched all your shorts and now back to your intro. Liked a couple or more vids. Think I'll sub as well. See you around.
Where did this youtuber go? Just found him.
His website has not seen any updates for about a year either, I hope he's OK 😕 Update: Someone on X/Twitter wrote "He's OK but has had to take a break from producing online content. Should be back in action next year." The tweet was from December 2023.
I highly recommend reading "the Breakdown of Nations" by Leopold Kohr. He was Schumacher's mentor and the originator of the concept of "human scale" To me the real lesson is simple... bigness and centralization is the root issue and decentralization and smallness are the antidote
We ain't gonna solve it.
That's right. It's bigger than us, and the titanic forces of nature will eventually demonstrate it.
Just popped up in my feed, Feb 24. Told to come back to A&E when I have a heart attack, not just pain and suffering. Wonder why hear death rate is highest for 10 years. On a plus side it’s one off the waiting list! Pension at 67 for me, only 15 years to go. Wonder why the survival graph for heart problems was on a 5 year graph, oh found out 77% dead by 10 years. Take care all and love the life you have now, M.
Wonderful! Thanks!
Considered people who spoke with him and studied his beliefs Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama
Thanks !
In California, we grow fruit and nuts, among many other things. But I grew up at Orange County: we grow Oranges. It does not take much to grow a tree. You need water, and a place to put it. The soil needs to be good enough, too. But all an all, one Orange tree is rather simple. If you have a means to store your rainfall, and hook that to a hose, you can easily have an Orange tree of your own. If you don't store your own water, though, you gotta get it from somewhere. If you have a creek nearby, that would be good. You could plant the orange tree near enough to carry the water. It is more difficult to carry water, yourself, but you could do it. If you don't got a creek, use a city-wide water system. Now, this is rather more complicated. If the water shuts down, you've got nothing to do. The more people want Oranges, the more Oranges you make, the more water you use, the more work it takes. You have a farm, rows and rows of just Orange trees, but it is a very complex system of dominoes to keep this functioning. With so many Oranges, and so much work devoted to them, more of your livlihood now depends on this single crop. Now, we have a state full of fruit and nut trees. We need a lot of water. Our state depends on these trees now- we already planted them! Cant go back... but we can't collect enough rain for this all, of course. No... what do we do? We use ground water, and thats a lot more complicated to figure out the pumping. But it works, we made money! We still have the trees... we still need water... so much work... --- "Please, everyone! Conserve your water: turn off you sinks and showers and sprinklers you wasteful scum." (We need it for our Oranges) --- There is less and less water every year.
Same thing is happening on some of the Canary Islands, only with banana and avocado plantations. The obvious solution would be to transition to something else that requires less water, but the farmers are barely making a living as it is, they're not willing to take that risk. And the water situation is only getting worse.
Wonderful detailed video, thank you! I have 2 KK stoves and love them both.
I just looked on eBay for the book, its not available 😢

This is how Democrats plan to turn the U.S into a Communist country.
Ok except you got it 100% backwards. This book was a threat that’s been fulfilled - NOT a baseless prediction. We are under attack. Look up in the sky. Every day. I wish I was kidding. Wake up.
What can a normal individual do?
@@seppa1671 Nothing. It doesn't change the fact we're fkd lol
3:05 He shows one of the book's forecasts (the standard run) that in the middle of the 21st century human activity would reach a peak and then decline. This is also what Adam Smith predicted (without a timeline). I don't understand how you think he got it 100% backwards?
I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for all the hardwork. Wishing you well.
It's staggering when you consider that the situation in Banbury is the situation in thousands of places across the western world, particularly, as you point out, public funds being used to prop up affluent lifestyles.
this (though I paraphrased and added a little bit): "resistance...begins when you refuse to live as directed by this [and all of the system's] economic scam[s]"
Interesting, red cheers!
Please, please, please keep your important work going Paul.
You really spun that thread without even weaving a cloth. You did not talk about his political ideology, how to achieve it, and his reasonings. Yes, he is right that the elitists walk all over us and we do need to speak out. Yeah, the elitists were his targets. Yes, Socrates is a great example of a man who challenged the corrupt system. But Alinsky teaches people to use narcissistic, corruptive, and immoral practices to cripple the opposition. In return, the revolutionists fill the spot as the corrupt elitist after the original is toppled. His ideology is a reflection of his character. He is a narcissistic, corruptive, and immoral person. His good acts do not have good intentions. Very Nazi-like. I wouldn’t say he’s a Nazi. Just comparing how the Nazi party did similar things to gain power. I dare Alinsky to face a man like Socrates or Marcus Aurelius in a debate in leadership, philosophy, and humanism. The great Stoics and other enlightened philosophers would demonize Alinsky’s ideology. They did not like progressiveness in political or social systems. They saw how it would not stop corruption. It would just change the system of corruption. Marcus, Socrates, and other great philosophers focused on the individual fixing themselves and to get along with those who differ so we can all live together cohesively like nature intended. For those of you who think I’m speaking out in a political stance, I’m purely centrist and dislike both the left and right. A bird needs both wings to fly.
