Leveling can only be done by first measuring the grade of the track. In this video I explore one possible hi-tech solution to log the layout grades. These points took some time to wire. Nice to get them working. Now fully operational. This marks the end of the troublesome wiring at the north end of the layout, mainly due to limited crawl space. The rest of the loop can now be built.

First track sortie for my Class 37, with a camera as a passenger. testing the block detection, and the resolution of my GoPro camera 2.7K Linear Mode (ie digitally distorts the video to correct for the fish-eye effect). 25fps Note no Light strobing effects evident.

Hi I'm in the process of building mine very similar to yours I have dug down 50-100mm and back filled with scalpings before laying ballast, have you found your track sink in any way??

You have a great railway but the videos are far too long. If you put all parts together to a 10 minute video in total .
Very similar to what I am building in Portugal. My problem is that our land is terraced, and during very heavy rain, assisted by voles, one of the retaining walls is collapsing and part of the track bed has dropped by 4-5"!

It's a pity you stopped at Victoria Bay and missed the struggle up the ravine just after. But well done for a record of a trip that will probably be no more.
They are attempting a rebuild, but the costs seem to make this unlikely. Hope you don't mind, but I've given your video a link on my video page. This is a bit of history that needs to be shared, and you did such a good job of it. As for my attempt, I ran out of tape! @@RanmoreCommonRailway How infuriating to run out of tape! My first trip to Africa in 1964 I had a Bell & Howell three turret lens clockwork 8mm camera where a 50 foot reel lasted 5 minutes. Not only did I run out of film at the wrong moment the clockwork ran down as well. How things have changed! Very happy for you to use anything I produce but a credit would be nice.
A bit on the Video authoring: This video was taken on a SONY PCR100E in DV PAL 4:3 format (standard), with a frame rate of 25 frames per second, and 2 interlaced layers per frame, giving a 'picture' rate of 50fps. The DV format is 720x 576. This was pretty good in its day! The RUclips video coding system does not recognize this format and down scales this to 480p (which is nearly 20% reduction in resolution). In an attempt to preserve more of the resolution, I upscaled the video in my render processing to 1440x720p before uploading to YT. This resulted in a marginally improved YT video of 720p, but with the render process effecting the vertical (horizontal seems ok). If anyone knows a of better workflow to trick YT into processing DV files more efficiently, I would be very grateful to hear from you, but until YT improves its handlining of DV files, then its all I can do. The original DV files are very sharp, and this video does not do the scenery any justice - shame, because its a very beautiful section of railway that has now been washed away by history.
Some one ton bags of materials would have saved you a bundle.
It did both. The difference between 1 ton dumpy bag and 1 ton prebagged into 25kg bags was about £30. But the extra time in loading and reloading into wheel barrows and spreading by spade was painful!

Seriously, I'd start with Google. There are just too many options for you to consider to make my help useful. I'd suggest deciding on your gauge first, and if you want it to pull passengers. But there will be plenty of options locally to you.

Hello, It certainly took a couple of months. It was a bit frustrating at times with the derailments. The more I ran it, the more it gradually improved. It seems as though once the ballast is well up in side the hollow sleepers things start to settle down. Basically my landscapers built what was a path but instead of a hard top it was done with gravel and I built and laid the track on it. The chaps used three tons of gravel on it. I would say persevere. Dont be put off by the odd problems. You will eventually get so it it gives you trouble free running. You are using a large curves than me but it was all I could fit in the garden!. It runs outside my O gauge garden railway. My wife and I are amazed how well it looks like part of the garden. It has blended in very well. All the best rgds Graham Powell
Thanks Graham. Good to know others' experiences. I have a question for you - have you over gauged your curves? I have (PNP rail set to 5 1/16") and I'm thinking its adding to derailment issues. Given that we both seem to be running similar wheel sets, i just wondered what your approach/experience has been?
@@RanmoreCommonRailway Hello Sorry dont know your name. I think it depends on where you are getting derailments. I set mine up so that the gauge widening was on the curves. Some of the initial problems were down to the carriage bogies . I either had them too tight or too slack. Now they seem to be fine as dont get many problems now. Personally I dont think that gauge widening is your problem. Its more likely down the track not being level cross wise i.e. parallel to the sleepers. I would try a spirit level across the track and jack and pack the ballast till its as level as you can get it. Then run it fair bit with loaded trains. I think then you should find that you may have the odd problem but things will start to settle down and improve. All the best rgds Graham Powell
I ve got a ride on railway in my garden. A local firm of garden landscapers and wall builders did the track bed in less than a week. My line is 65 yards right round and I have one point going into the engine shed. Locomotives are Ride on Railways electric loco and Polly Models "Caroline" . The latter will go round the 12ft radius curves. Hardest part like yours was bending the rails and making the track. Initially it didnt run too well but now its bedded in, derailments are mercifully very rare and the grand children play with it. Rolling stock consists of one Ride on Railways coach. Its great fun and been worth the effort. best wishes Graham Powell
Nice Graham. I like your choice of edging blocks, very smart. How long did it take for the rail bed to settle? 3 months gone and I'm still adding material in places to stablize the track!

Is the loop all that will be done or is it just the start you look to have a fair bit more room left for track

Yes! Digging is always more effort than anyone imagines. I would have struggled to compete this year without the COVID lock-down confining me to staring at my laziness if i hadn't had completed it!
Thanks. Interesting, but it would have helped immensely if you'd said a bit more about how you obtained your levels and the different types of materials used - for example, are the bed edgings wood or concrete? Apologies: you've now covered most of this!
Tom, thanks for your interest. When i started this vlog, it was more me, and posting to YT was an after thought, but it seems to have attracted more interest than i was expecting. Although its not really aimed at being a tutorial, i think you will find the answers to a few of your points in part 1 ruclips.net/video/jzuIlQoROak/видео.html ; I found the levels by using an inexpensive laser leveler (6:05, part1), and the materials are shown in closeup at (08:35, part 1). There's a summary of material and costs at the end of this video (12:50).
Where did you purchase this Loco? It looks amazing. I've got some Live Steam 0 Gauge but I'd love something like this that's ride on.

hi RCR Great Work I been thinking of laying a there and back track in my garden, i would appreciate some advice on this please, is the alloy track readily available, is it a specific profile and what lengths does it come in and what price does it work out at and where from. regards mr f
Mr F, I bought mine from these guys. www.rideonrailways.co.uk/accessories/page02.html www.pnp-railways.co.uk/product-category/track-work/ Ali-rail comes in 2.5m sections. £160ish for 10meters. Although, I bought in bulk (80m) and got a discount some years back. The rail profile seems standard, but may be specific to these guys. They seem to share stock between them. They do chairs for steel bar as well. It might be cheaper if you are patient and wait for an ebay sale of second had stuff that comes up from time to time, but horses for courses as they say. I know there are many other sources you could go to, so shop around. Kind regards Rob.

Welcome, and thanks for the interest. My main interests are Live steam 5" gauge (Summer and COVID lockdown times), and OO loft layout (winter). There seems to be interest on YT for live steam, so i may video my attempts at commissioning my 5" 1400 Tank at some stage (although I don't have machining facilities).

Diameter of 10.8meters (35ft 6in) (Radius of 5.9m). Maximum i could fit into the area. The radius has some unevenness, so i guess at its tightest points may be down to a 5m radius. Incline(grade) on average is currently 1%, diagonally across the oval. But there are peaks and troughs that mean there are short 2.5% grades, which i should be able to sort out given some more time over the coming months of use. I'm currently mapping the layout to estimate the additional ballast requirements. Happy to share if you have an interest.

@@mrjcfpants minimum radius is a bit of a dark art. There are generally accepted guides quoted of the minimum radius greater than 20 times the loco fixed wheel base, but down to 12 times is also possible. See this useful article - www.rideonrailways.co.uk/paul/building/page16.html. In this case my GWR tank is an 0-4-2 where the rear wheel set '2' floats/trails, and so the '4' wheel set is taken as the 'fixed' wheel set of 20cm (giving a minimum working radius of 4m), and the little shunter in this video has a 25cm wheel spacing, so it would seem to require a radius of at least 5m. But i know each will go around 3m & 4m short curves respectively. Point work tends to be more useful in garden setting on tighter configurations anyway. There are also a few tricks to note: you can over gauge your tightest curves a little. using 5 & 1/16" rather than 5" will help a lot, but there may be issues if you run locos that are dissimilar wheel arrangements. I've chosen to set my min radius over 5m, and also over gauge to 5 & 1/16 on the curves. I would STRONGLY recommend to always dig the largest radius you can fit in your garden, don't be tempted to "cut corners" cos you will probably live to deeply regret it, but if a tight curve is needed then it can probably can be made to work, (as long as you are happy running a 0-4-0, and don't expect to run a 9F!)

What engine have you used for the railway ?😀
I have two electric engines; both shunters. The one on this video is a 12v single motor, reasonably low powered loco made by Compasshouse Engineering. It's fine to pull a few children around, or one average size adult. My second electric shunter is a 3 motor (12v) "08 Class" with mixed origins which is at least three times the tractive effort of the smaller loco. I will be running this on a 24v controller. which is in the process of conversion. Its not been shown on this video, as I'm upgrading the controller systems at the moment. Finally, I have a 14XX GWR tank coal fired steam engine. Its does not have a current boiler certificate, so it will be sometime before I'm able to run this on the layout. All will be my new time bandits!
