Sailing the Aegean is dealing with the Meltemi, a strong northerly wind that blows all summer, non-stop. We are giving our KAOZ a good workout. Though sailing to get there but the destinations are superb. And because it's not so easy to navigate we don't have to deal with too many boats, that's a bonus!!

Taking KAOZ into Türkiye was going to be prohibitively expensive so we decided to park her on the island of Lesvos and ferry across to pick up a car. After picking up our crew we have a dash towards Lesvos, a dash it is, we are getting acquainted with the Meltemi again. That's what they call the wind in the Aegean, generally always from the north and fierce in summer. Our Kaoz is about to get a good workout!

Time to sail up north to pick up our crew. Not many sailboats venture out this way, some quiet anchorages and a mixed bag of wind/no wind. We are in the northern Aegean Sea.

One of the more popular destinations in Greece (for sailors) is the Sporades. We are still early in the season (June) so hopefully it will not be too busy just yet. In fact it was not busy at all, lots of anchorages we only shared with one or two other boats, bliss 😊

It's that time of the year to give Kaoz a bit of TLC. Found this little boatyard on the island of Evia that has good reviews so we thought we might as well give them a try. Good results and cheap as well so we and Kaoz are happy 😊

We are slowly moving up towards the northern Aegean Sea, towards the Sporades group of islands. We can't believe how quiet it is, often we share our anchorage with no-one. The quiet before the storm of the high season I guess? We're making the most of it!

Back in the Ionian but what a difference it makes being here early in the season rather than September. Way too much wind most of the time but we persevere and at one time returned back to harbour as it was insane out there. It can only get better 😊😎

And so we are finally on our way again. Had to wait for the weather window to allow us to have a relaxed first sail of the season. It turned out to be a quick and comfortable run! Yes, we did sail to Malta this time, no more excuses 😊⛵️

One way to escape winter is to head to the tropics. So back to Penang it is. We have a lot of previous footage already so this is short and sweet. Had a great time catching up with our old friends and generally doing not much, enjoying the pool and the food!

Boat life is not all beer and skittles... Here's a bit of a technical video to let you in on a major improvement we are making to KAOZ. As mentioned it's a work in progress but we are installing a watermaker to give us even more time to live off grid!

Oh my 😲The coming off dock 👍No idea what that was about for the docking. I had no idea what you where doing in your docking techniques but ended with the right idea. Just if you would have got the spring on in the beginning and a little more follow through and you would have nailed it. What do I mean? lets look at it. A subject I preach myself and amazed at the lack of basic docking and handling skills. A good docking almost always starts off with a spring line. What did Archimedes say: "Give me a place to stand, a lever long enough, and I will move the world" But in this case not a lever but a spring line. Not just any spring line…a "magic" spring (dramatics for effect) the one line that, all by itself, makes all the difference. I’m belaboring the point here because spring lines are the trick to easy docking. The key is to have the aft-running spring should run from a point on the boat that is about one third, or a little more, forward from the stern, not from amidships. With a spring properly secured first on the boat and running to a cleat or bollard ranging from about 8 feet (2.4 meters) to as far as your line (or crew) can run aft-exact position on the dock matters not one wit-you are docked. Doesn’t matter: if the wind is blowing you on or off; how long the crew takes to get the other lines on; if the helmsperson must leave the wheel to hand or throw another line to the crew on the dock. Once that magic aft spring is secured, everything else is just tidying up, with no urgency required. In your case a forward idle once spring was attached would have put you right where you needed to be.
First maneuver is ok, but it should be done with big fender, the one that is usually at the back. The second maneuver is a disaster.
It's always a challenge arriving at a quay when there is an onshore wind with no one there to help with the lines. Not quite a disaster though as we did not hit anything and parked eventually. A disaster would be sinking the boat 😊
You seemed to HAVE a better plan for the 1st maneuver. The second approach...not so much.

During the whole process: no helmets, no vests, no harness?? No safety equipment? But a beautiful boat though.
Thanks she is a beauty. I guess we were lucky not to be in Australia where the nanny state would have wanted everyone, including us to wear a high vis vest. At least the guys got the job done (in freezing temperature) 👍🏻
