this isn’t even a e46 thing, it’s a 20 year old car thing, both of my SAABs have needed cooling system overhauls. just do your maintenance and the car will treat you well, a e46 cooling system overhaul kit is like $600, certainly not the end of the world for a old BMW.

These cars are a pain to maintain and BMW engineers them to be a pain in the a$$ if you intend on keeping a BMW longer then 3 years , the gaskets will go bad and cause the car to overheat at the minimum or destroy the engine . In these times with our economy and the high cost to just live without extravagant cars and luxury items , BMW thinks people will continue to pay giant sums of money for a vehicle that has a 3 year life span on purpose is just ignorant on there part and they clearly can’t read the room ! People are going to rethink the idea of purchasing a BMW or Mercedes due to the fact they require an automobile that they can depend on daily and perhaps for as long as 10 years . The thing is BMW could have been that German automaker that builds cars that are incredibly reliable and easy to own and the car that people come back over and over when they hand a car down to there children or they decide they want to trade up or they have decided to become a two car household . Nope they took the low road and build cars that are unreliable and self destruct on their own in as little as 3 years . My neighbor sold his 3 series BMW and purchased a new 2023 Honda Civic si brand new because of the fact the Honda will hold its value and his BMW sold for only $8,500 and he paid I believe over $48,000 for his BMW and the truth is I believe he paid more then that for it ! I just don’t think he wants to tell me . His BMW had started spending more time being repaired at the dealership then in his driveway .

Antifreeze is better than water because it has a much higher boiling point and once the water starts boiling,it no longer extracts heat from the engine or the cooling system could get over pressured and fail if using water.

God I miss my e46 … id do anything to get it back, that means steal it back so don’t try me 😂
