Thank you for this excellent video and your detailed commentary. Very well done. I have ridden my bike over this bridge many times. It's very enjoyable. I love to get on the SMART train too.
SMART rules! I hope we can maintain 24/7 access for the bridge.
We drove westbound on the I-580 last October as visitors and thought it was amazing to see a separated bike lane on a major bridge-and even better, people were actually using it! Great commentary in this video, and I really hope this infrastructure remains in place for the future. Watching this has made me want to visit the area again to explore all the great infrastructure and the community that surrounds it. Best wishes from near Victoria, BC, Canada
Thanks for sharing your experience. My hope is that this video can assist in the efforts to keep full access to the bridge. I have a lot of videos from the Bay Area, so please check them out before you come back. And one day I need to see Vancouver by bike I honeymooned there in 2015 (Whistler) and thought the protected lanes were great. I imagine the network has improved.
Shorter way to Larkspur landing is to ride over the bridge and then go by San Quentin.
I hear ya. I mention that at the 1:00 mark...I wanted to see a bit of the bay trail north and then ride through the tunnel along SMART.
This is my neighborhood. I ride these paths every day for shopping, restaurants, groceries, gym, medical appointments, beergardens, etc... Living here allows us to live carfree in our late 50s. We feel blessed to live in a 15-minute city. This is a great tour of our town.
I love this. 15 minute cities make us healthier, wealthier, and happier. This idea needs to spread like wildfire.
If I knew this was happening, I'd have biked over. Oh well.
Follow the local coalitions via their email list or on social media. This is how I learned about it.
Haha! I've been exploring this area recently. First up the Greenway to where it ends (you had to make that ("first turn"), then I tried getting to Richmond BART, and was also going down the bike lane street, though sidewalked since it was all new to me. On another trip I took BART up, explored west, then came back east and tried to connect to the eastern greenway back down to El Cerrito, haha no. Maps told me to take that little high speed bike lane, I sidewalked it, maybe missed my first right turn, hairpinned back down a different sidewalk, finally made it home. Richmond has a lot of neat and new bike segments but they don't connect up well. There's a very protected bike path running south of BART, for like a mile or so, then it just... ends. Going west there are semi-protected (thick flexposts) bike paths on various streets, which are nice-ish.
Yeah, there's a lot of good stuff, but biking is only as good as the network. So much potential, but they're doing good stuff overall. Much better than what Marin is doing on their side of the bridge. Richmond has more mileage of the Bay Trail than any other city, so check that out if you haven't already. I've never been on the northern Bay Trail sections, so those are next for me.
Great video! Thanks for showing the entire route, sharing some history (didn’t know the Greenway was a railway), and the informative commentary.
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
My e-bikes are Rad for the same reason. People there are amazing. Love to see a downtown ride starting at Russel/San Pablo via Milvia. Really enjoy your rides!!!! Btw Delaware rocks for bikes!
Thanks for sharing! I have since learned as well that Delaware rocks.
I love your videos. I live on the E’ville Greenway and can attest that it offers a wonderful lifestyle.
Thanks for confirming. 😀 It looks dreamy.
Thanks for this video. We'll be moving to Valencia next September and, as an avid cyclist, I'll be looking for all these options to explore.
These videos were made for you! I’m thrilled that you found them. I recorded a couple others, one in the Xurra Greenway and the other that shows the route to the Albufuera. Those will be out next year (and hopefully before your trip). Valencia is awesome. We are trying to get back ASAP.
Are escooters allowed in the bay bridge trail?
Here's what the website says: Skateboards, scooters and skates are not permitted I don't know what they mean by scooters...if that's a moped style or the standing scooters. They patrol the bridge, but I haven't seen anyone patrolling there since the bridge opened.
Did you use a ebike, bike, or escooter? Also, can you use escooters as someone did in your video on the trail?
In general, escooters seem to be legal on the Bay Trail. I rode an e-bike for all of these videos in the area. I think the only requirement is to keep it below 15 mph.
Wow looks nice
Excellent tour! Thank you and you made some great points about cycling in a city (being able to chat to someone cycling next to you etc) Sweet child stretching out his arms ❤
Still an all-time favorite moment on a bike.
Whatever happened to your lovely talks about the area? I really missed it in this video.
I still make them, but they take so long. I don’t use AI or anything, so the research, writing, and editing takes forever. I plan to release ones like this so I can cover more ground. But I am in the process of recording more talks about Cologne, Germany; Seville, Spain; Cadiz, Spain, and Forest Park in St. Louis. I have recorded a lot more in the Bay Area that will be published after that. Thanks for the note. I’m glad you enjoy the videos.
@ We just moved to England from Spain and I enjoyed your Valencia videos.
@ I have more content from our time there, like the Xurra Greenway and the ride down to the Albufuera. But I’m spacing those out to cover more cities.
hey, mac, serious question, what should that black cr-v do instead of passing you? thanks for this cool channel.
He turned right and we were at the stop sign within 5 or 10 seconds. I think he should be patient. If I was making a left into a driveway then it would be a bad situation.
My bike was doing about 22mph in a 25 zone, if that helps with the context. He had to speed to pass me for barely anything gained. I appreciate the engagement.
@@thegreenwaywithmac ah, yes, mph context helps a lot. looking forward to more of your good work!
I used to bike commute between the West Oakland BART station and Point Richmond, so I have ridden the Richmond & Ohlone Greenways a few times. Even though you said the Bay Trail is a more indirect way, I find that to be much quicker than using the two greenways (way too many stop signs/lights along that route).
I totally agree that it’s faster. I think what I meant was if you were riding a segment of those parallel paths. It might not be worth going all the way down to the Bay Trail and back, unless you were doing most or all of the ride to Richmond. There are also limited safe connections down and back.
Super, loved the video.
Thanks for the note. These are like getting a wind at my back (and fuel for making more videos).
Thanks for the video, I just moved out of Oakland and commuted to Emeryville on bike to work, already miss it!
Hopefully they are improving bike infrastructure in your new home.
Unsavory people you are a classist asshole. Bootlickers are the scum of the earth.
hi mr macmillan
Hola
Can’t believe this was 3 years ago! We should do it again! Was telling my bro how this ride is so awesome.
Yeah, so much a beautiful spot. The kids did so well.
what a great ride on a nice day with your family.
Thank you. 😊
Pretty as I remember it!
You ran a red light @ 20:00
Still a lot of work to be done, but glad City of Berkeley is making improvements. The roundabouts would be great. The barriers are honestly ugly but do the job to slow things down.
Hopefully it continues to improve. But yeah, still so much to be done.
It was a fun ride! There were lots to see in Emeryville. Drone shots looks good too ;) Will shoot more in future
Can’t wait. It’s much for fun to ride with a buddy.
Oh man! Thanks for the video. I used to ride my bike to work at a spot right across from Fantasy Studios. And back then there was no bike lanes or infrastructure. It’s come a long way.
It used to be the Wild West! Hopefully they make it safe enough that more people like you ride through town.
Miss that ride! Thanks. Miss the route in, too, up over the massive hill with great views of the bridge and bay
Yeah, really lovely in that whole area. Unbelievable views and scenery.
Wow! It’s changed so much since I lived there in Oakland. And you can thank Mayor John for all that infrastructure right?
He’s a big part of it. He’s championed the cause. But others before him laid the groundwork. I’ll have an update from Emeryville sometime this week…along with a street connection to a cool trail in Berkeley.
AA Bartlett was my physics professor in the Fall of 1986/Spring of 1987 at CU Boulder. His class was quick moving and memorable. He was an amazing person; so smart and forward looking. Find his presentation on exponential growth. It still rattles around my brain from time to time.
Great. Greetings from germany 🙏
Thanks for watching. I recorded 1-2 videos worth from Cologne this summer, so you can expect that one later this year.
@@thegreenwaywithmac 💎☺️
Thanks for this, I've lived here a long time but haven't ridden downtown in many years, back when you had to compete with traffic. You've inspired me to go explore all these beautiful new bike routes!
This is so awesome. Enjoy the journey!
And you need to be super rich to live here so remember the honor to ride the trails as a visitor! The late Al Bartlett was also a critic of the city council for their bad decisions on growth in the city....I also noticed a "homeless" tent in your video. Not talked about but a big problem in Boulder.
We have these same issues in the San Francisco Bay Area. I generally want these to be love letters to the cities. I’ll only bring up the tents if it’s a safety hazard, which happened when I recorded in Austin. I mentioned it and showed an example. The path was obstructed. I’ve heard Portland can have the same problem, but I didn’t observe it on my route.
Odd that there aren't more bikes on the path. We hardly see anyone pass you in the opposite direction
Yeah, it really depends on the day and time. I’m always torn whether to record these when there is a ton of people, like on a weekend, or less. It’s a little safer to record with fewer people, but yeah, makes the path look unused.
3:43 nice right hook
Holy moly. I hadn’t noticed that. It happened once to me in a video, at 1:41 in my Austin video.
Thank you for this tour. I live on the coast and want to return to Portland on bicycle next week.
Should be a beautiful time to be there.
…In Berkeley itself most of the surface streets are just in terrible condition…
Funny you should say that. I have a short video coming out soon that is in the streets of Berkeley (Berkeley Bowl West to Crystol Red Park on the 9th St bicycle boulevard). Berkeley is shockingly bad for biking overall.
Portland is a great city for cycling year round, and even though it rains a lot in the winter, it's usually a light rain, so all you need is a good hoodie. Summers are dry and sunny, without the big afternoon thunderstorms and tornadoes like you see in the midwest. Temperatures usually stay above freezing, so there really aren't that many days you have to leave the bike home like many cities. Even though the west hills are challenging, the Eastside is fairly level and an easy ride. Portland does have its share of crime, drugs, and homelessness, so use common sense when you go for a ride.
This is all very helpful to know. I bike as part of my daily commute and agree that the rain is not a big deal if you’re prepared with appropriate clothing. People on the west side can use an e-bike if the hills are a problem. Portland isn’t perfect, but I think it’s good enough for most people to safely move through the city without a car. Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective!
This is the most informative and visually beautiful city bike video I have ever seen. Thanks!
Wow, thanks for the kind words. This is fuel to sit down and crank out the next video.
It's so annoying they didn't connect SF to Treasure Island. Seems like such a missed opportunity. We would have loved to have that as a riding route. Otherwise, I have a 60-mile route to get to Treasure Island, so not like I can do an out-and-back to see the Island.
I couldn’t agree more. They need to connect Treasure Island and San Francisco immediately. I know there are some plans to do it, but it seems like there hasn’t been any progress in a couple of years.
Awesome area to cycle
What a great video! Thank you so much for putting this together! So informative, and absolutely beautiful footage of the city🙂
I’m so happy that you enjoyed it. Portland is a fantastic city.
Thanks for your comprehensive video. One thing that I find striking is that during your extensive ride, one sees so few actual cyclists using these elaborate paths. This is kind of disappointing considering the effort and expense to install these routes. Thanks again!
Yeah, this was an observation I made specifically in the downtown section. It was a Friday afternoon in the summer with nice weather. It seemed like more people should have been out. I'd be curious to see what it's like during commute hours...I believe Portland has the highest rate of bike commuters for a large city.
@thegreenwaywithmac since the pandemic and protests of 2020, a huge percentage of downtown office buildings are vacant. More people are working from home. This is the case for most downtowns in America and it's predicted to stay this way in the future. Most people don't want to bike to work anyway, because it's strenuous/physically difficult, impractical and takes longer. Perhaps Portland can create more biking events/tours that will better utilize these greenways.
@@LR2894h It makes sense that things have changed. We have observed this in San Francisco as well. I disagree about biking, though. I sold my car 4 years ago (and share one with my wife) and I enjoy my commute now. It’s 18 miles round trip and I don’t sweat since it has the pedal assist. I don’t feel as good if I have to drive. Portland is one of the few American cities where you can safely go car-free or car-lite. I expect they will have a resurgence in biking. Car culture is expensive.
Yeah totally a waste of money to have bikeways. The homeless often idle in the lanes while high. I love our liberal and utopian paradise!
That’s not what I observed on my ride. Safe bike infrastructure helps people move throughout the city without adding pollution, they reduce the risk of injuring others with 2,000 pound metal boxes, and help people live a healthy lifestyle. Using your logic we shouldn’t spend money on roads and highways because of traffic and people living in their vehicles…something I’m not opposed to if you want to be fair.
At the end of this video, is there a way to pick up the SF Bay Trail going North? Or, do you just have to go back out the way you came?
You can go north on marina and then take a waterfront path back to the bay trail, but I believe it is unpaved. The distance is pretty much the same.
@@thegreenwaywithmac Thanks!
Are cars hostile/grumpy or do they give way to cyclists?
I did my best to avoid them, but in the few encounters I had they were patient. But most drivers are when you have a kid with you. I’ll be there next month to shoot new routes in Porto and Lisbon.
My favorite bike trail! If you continue on the trail, it goes under the eastern span of the Bay Bridge onto Treasure Island. Warning, the bike trail into Treasure Island is incredibly steep. Riding down the trail is not recommended. Walking your bike down is the way to go. Also, there is a ferry that runs from Treasure Island to the ferry terminal in San Francisco, with plenty of room for bicycles/E-bikes.
All accurate info. I love this trail as well…just takes a while to get there from Alameda. How’s the new park atop the hill?
@@thegreenwaywithmac I haven't been there since last year, but I'll make a trip over there very soon.
I found the background music to be too loud and distracting.
Thank you for the feedback.
These tips and tricks are great for when I can go visit. I remember well when using visuals even though some stuff might change it will help me a ton. Thank you for doing this for us travelers!
