    I used to bike commute between the West Oakland BART station and Point Richmond, so I have ridden the Richmond & Ohlone Greenways a few times. Even though you said the Bay Trail is a more indirect way, I find that to be much quicker than using the two greenways (way too many stop signs/lights along that route).

    • @thegreenwaywithmac
      @thegreenwaywithmac 3 дня назад

      I totally agree that it’s faster. I think what I meant was if you were riding a segment of those parallel paths. It might not be worth going all the way down to the Bay Trail and back, unless you were doing most or all of the ride to Richmond. There are also limited safe connections down and back.

    • @thegreenwaywithmac
      @thegreenwaywithmac 2 месяца назад

      We have these same issues in the San Francisco Bay Area. I generally want these to be love letters to the cities. I’ll only bring up the tents if it’s a safety hazard, which happened when I recorded in Austin. I mentioned it and showed an example. The path was obstructed. I’ve heard Portland can have the same problem, but I didn’t observe it on my route.

  • @larryjex6485
    @larryjex6485 2 месяца назад

    Portland is a great city for cycling year round, and even though it rains a lot in the winter, it's usually a light rain, so all you need is a good hoodie. Summers are dry and sunny, without the big afternoon thunderstorms and tornadoes like you see in the midwest. Temperatures usually stay above freezing, so there really aren't that many days you have to leave the bike home like many cities. Even though the west hills are challenging, the Eastside is fairly level and an easy ride. Portland does have its share of crime, drugs, and homelessness, so use common sense when you go for a ride.

    • @thegreenwaywithmac
      @thegreenwaywithmac 2 месяца назад

      This is all very helpful to know. I bike as part of my daily commute and agree that the rain is not a big deal if you’re prepared with appropriate clothing. People on the west side can use an e-bike if the hills are a problem. Portland isn’t perfect, but I think it’s good enough for most people to safely move through the city without a car. Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective!

      Yeah, this was an observation I made specifically in the downtown section. It was a Friday afternoon in the summer with nice weather. It seemed like more people should have been out. I'd be curious to see what it's like during commute hours...I believe Portland has the highest rate of bike commuters for a large city.

    • @LR2894h
      @LR2894h 4 месяца назад

      @thegreenwaywithmac since the pandemic and protests of 2020, a huge percentage of downtown office buildings are vacant. More people are working from home. This is the case for most downtowns in America and it's predicted to stay this way in the future. Most people don't want to bike to work anyway, because it's strenuous/physically difficult, impractical and takes longer. Perhaps Portland can create more biking events/tours that will better utilize these greenways.

    • @thegreenwaywithmac
      @thegreenwaywithmac 4 месяца назад

      @@LR2894h It makes sense that things have changed. We have observed this in San Francisco as well. I disagree about biking, though. I sold my car 4 years ago (and share one with my wife) and I enjoy my commute now. It’s 18 miles round trip and I don’t sweat since it has the pedal assist. I don’t feel as good if I have to drive. Portland is one of the few American cities where you can safely go car-free or car-lite. I expect they will have a resurgence in biking. Car culture is expensive.

      That’s not what I observed on my ride. Safe bike infrastructure helps people move throughout the city without adding pollution, they reduce the risk of injuring others with 2,000 pound metal boxes, and help people live a healthy lifestyle. Using your logic we shouldn’t spend money on roads and highways because of traffic and people living in their vehicles…something I’m not opposed to if you want to be fair.

      @@thegreenwaywithmac i am joking bro lol, ofc there is some bad neighborhoods in riverside like university ave which is known for homeless though i seen a bit less, eastside neighborhood which has gotten better and rarely hear gunshots but it use to be like the worse neighborhood in riverside, casa blanca i heard is bad because of the gangs but don't know how it is now, arlanza has good and bad parts la sierra good and bad. rubidoux use to be a part of riverside and was ghetto but now is in jurupa valley lastly downtown idk how it is and fairmount park not sure, canyon crest ucr belvedere heights orangecrest hillcrest wood crest wood streets are all beautiful, on par with rancho cucamonga and even better then some neighborhoods in rancho, it really just depends on neighborhoods i guess. because canyon crest imo looks better then say north cucamonga etc. some places in riverside can look like san bernardino kinda while some places in riverside can look like diamondbar kinda lol

    Where can you park your car when biking to the bay bridge?

    • @thegreenwaywithmac
      @thegreenwaywithmac 7 месяцев назад

      If you are doing the trail to the bridge, then I would park at the Bay St parking garage. You might be able to park for free at IKEA, if you want to take a risk of being ticketed or towed. There might be some parking near Horton and 53rd on the street for free, near where the video started. You can also park at the base of the bridge at 210 Burma Rd, right next to the trail.

    You do a good video. I appreciate the historical context and info on landmarks. I’ve been to Valencia but only in a car and was disappointed, but your video has completely changed my mind. Thank you!!!

      It sounds like you need to go back! Valencia by bike, metro, bus, and foot is the best. I dream about when I can return.

      It’s better, but not 100%. Follow up X-rays are this week. Healing is taking longer than I expected. Thanks for asking.

      That’s what I have heard from my friends still living there. We had a cold winter two years ago when I lived in the city. I’m so sad to have missed this great weather!

      @@thegreenwaywithmac I am bc and currently thinking to switch city because of that. I love how warm is Valencia. My first winter in Spain and sometimes is really cold especially in the night here. Valencia looks like better pick due to this. Thx for reply.

    It is dangerous to ride on these bike lanes in Valencia. These scooters should be banned.

      It’s hard to speak for everyone. I think that the scooters are fine. Cars are much more dangerous.

      IMHO bike lanes taking the sidewalks by default is the big mistake. But it's open to debate and depends on the streets. @@thegreenwaywithmac

      In Barcelona it is very crowded and quite dangerous here it is very calm in comparison. Even parking on bike lanes is very often in bc. This is clear winner.
