C'mon feel the noise - F5000 Racing
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.10 лет назад
Intended as a 'budget' race formula, mating production-based engines with GP chassis, Formula 5000 provided some of the most spectacular racing ever. These cars produced similar power to contemporary 3-litre F1 cars, and were perhaps only a little heavier. Many F1 legands of the day also raced F5000. Regardless of what the FIA says, when it comes to racing there really is NO SUBSTITUTE for cubi...
1994 Ferrari 412T1 Feature
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.10 лет назад
Stripped of aerodynamic ground effects and electronic driver aids, for many Formula1 fans these cars were the apex of F1 development. All chassis, engine and gearbox, these relatively simple cars were F1 technlogy at it's accessible best. Ferrari's 412T developed 800 horsepower from it's 3.5 liters at an ear-splitting 15,800 rpm - F1 never sounded better! For Ferrari, who had endured years of r...

    I was an IBM customer engineer in 1967. A colleague and I installed around 20 IBM 1060 Teleprocessing Teller Terminals (one shown in this clip) in various ASB branches across Auckland. I recall that we ran them in offline mode for about 6 months until the online facility was connected. The offline feature was not designed for continuous operation and used to overheat. We had to change the lubricant used to get them to stay up.

    I may be a few years late, but the machine you are showing is a 360 model 40, not a 30

    • @machinesthatcount

      Based on what? The documentation for it references the /30

      @@machinesthatcount Hi John, I'm too old to be a boomer, and I've worked on all 360 CPUs, except some of the model 9x stuff. Compare the photo at www.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/mainframe/mainframe_2423PH2040.html with www.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/mainframe/mainframe_2423PH2030.html . The 40 had 16 data switches, as the data path through the machine was 2 bytes. More notably, the lamps on the 40 console plugged in from the front, where on the 30 you had to get behind the panel to change lamps, and they shone through the panel. The 30 even had a low pressure red light, that was missing on the 40. Strange, but the ROS unit had air bags that needed to be inflated before the machine would run.

      Here's a much nicer photo of the 30 static.righto.com/images/ibm-360/ibm-30-chm.jpg

      @@machinesthatcount Actually, the yellow machine you show is indeed a /30, the mac hine you show at the beginning of the video is a 40.

    • @machinesthatcount
      @machinesthatcount 5 лет назад

      Jerry S yes they’re not the same machine. The documentation that was with the red machine referred to a /30 but I take your advice on that.

    Was the Ferrari at the end considered to be an F5000 or were they just letting him race in a different class?

    • @machinesthatcount
      @machinesthatcount 8 лет назад

      They were just letting him have a run. Nobody was trying too hard, but it was interesting how the F1 car compared for torque etc.

    • @machinesthatcount
      @machinesthatcount 6 лет назад

      There was nothing else that they could run comfortably with - and even then they weren't well matched, but great to watch nevertheless

    Hey John, do you have anything you can link me to about their color choices and how IBM came up with the color and design of the 360? It's such an iconic look but I can't seem to find anything other than a few words here and there. I want to know more about what influenced the design and color choice.

  • @machinesthatcount
    @machinesthatcount 11 лет назад

    F1 will tell you that the sound of F1 cars is not a part of their appeal, but the sound of this V12 running at 13,000+rpm is raw and visceral. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 cars perform, but they're unlikely to appeal to the audience the way that this generation of cars does.
