    • @tobiasgronvall
      @tobiasgronvall 4 месяца назад

      @TB-om4dd I will speculate (not stating facts) that one of the reasons Katy's collaboration with him has garnered attention at the moment is the fact that Perry was a part of the lawsuit in 2014, even if she was involuntarily involved based on further accusations from Kesha, which Katy denied. But that probably led to Katy's decision to exclude him from Witness and Smile. Wise move. One of the many parts might be the anticipation of the 'comeback album', and when the news drops that a certain producer/writer will also join her on that album, the winds start to blow. Another part of the attention she is getting atm is the 'message' in the lyrics for her new single, 'Woman’s World', where some claim that her take on feminism doesn't work. It is a perfect storm (or perhaps Katy would call it imperfect). I know that Dr Luke has denied all of the allegations directed at him, and he has not been found guilty. And I am not saying that he is guilty. But, with that kind of reputation accusations directed towards him, it is surprising that Katy chose to collaborate with him. Even if Katy was OK with this, someone on her team must have raised this topic at some point and advised her that this might not be the best move, that it may take away the focus on her new music, her comeback album and also bad in a business/brand sense. I like the new single. I am not dissecting the lyrics, or slander them for being shallow or hollow. It is a pop song (in that case we should criticise/cancel 98% of all music lyrics in pop music for the last 100 years). But a song that is both written and produced by Luke, a song whose lyrics highlight and celebrate women is yet another layer of this controversy and leaves a bitter aftertaste. Guilty or not, the reputation lingers and it can easily ruin careers, and that is why her decision is so frustrating to me as a fan.

      Sure, but I'd argue that their collaboration is a bit more awkward in this particular case since he was hired for a song about female empowerment. For those who do believe the allegations against him, his credit undermines the entire message of the song.

      Thank you for the recommendation for Clairo. I haven't listen to her before. I had a listen to the single, 'Sexy To Someone', and I really liked it. Interesting production, sounds like a traditional setup when in comes to instrumentation, but there is something in the production that breaks that mould. Could be the distortion on various instruments that gives it a bit of a gritty feel. The track I really got stuck with, on further listening, is 'Sofia' from the album 'Immunity'. Very good pop track with, yet again, a very interesting production. Great stuff! I will do some listening to Tove Lo's albums as well.

    Tobias - have you ever been to any of the Amoeba Records locations in California? They have tons of vinyl.

      I haven't been to any of the Amoeba locations. I have seen videos from the one in LA and it's definitely on my list to visit at some point. With the amount of vinyl records they have, I would probably need to schedule a full day just for that store. 😊

    I go to record shows to find some hidden gems. My town only has four good record stores with tons of used vinyl. So I attend these shows, which travel to nearby towns. They are held every two weeks. I find a lot of foreign pressings and stuff never released in Canada.

    I really enjoyed your video. I'll be sure to check out some Lena Phillipsson after your recomendation. I find it really funny that in Sweden coming 5th could be seen as a big disapointment and 12th is a disaster. Just goes to show how big the swedish pop market is and how big the expectations were (and are) as a result. I come from Portugal and it took 53 years to get a single top 5 result (which ended up winning). My country takes a very different approach to Eurovision because the music scene is much smaller and focused on more traditional stuff. I gotta say that from 1980 until 82, the Portuguese entries were probably the most fun we ever got. I don't know if you remember them. It came at point where the conservative dictatorship had ended, the democracy was stable and the country was looking to modernize and blend in with the rest of the European countries, which was seen at the entries to Eurovision. Fair to say that it didn't last very long (the results weren't great even for the lower expectations, and pop music was pretty frowned upon back then). My favourite swedish representative from the last couple years was Cornelia Jakobs. I think that sometimes Sweden are guilty of "style over substance", and I really enjoyed the rawer and earthier approach. From 2024, I also really enjoyed Italy, but I usually do every year. My favourite from this year was the Ukrainian song. I just really enjoyed the ethereal, religious sound scape they were going for

      Thank you for the comment. Glad that you enjoyed the video. Really interesting reading the backstory on the Portuguese entries for Eurovision. I couldn't remember on top of my head the entries in the early eighties, so I had a watch and listen to them here on RUclips. I do remember the 1981 act, Carlos Paião, probably mostly for the colorful clothes, but also the chorus "Play-back". Most of all I recognised Doce with Bem Bom from 1982. Once again because I thought the clothes were really cool at the time, but most importantly, it is a really catchy, disco flavored song. Also found the surreal video for the song here on RUclips. Thank you for reminding me of the early eighties Portuguese entries. 😊 I do like the approach of the traditional elements in the Portuguese entries nowadays. And I totally agree with your comment on the Swedish entries, Cornelia Jacobs is a stand out entry from last couple of years, but we are certainly guilty with style over substance at times as well.

    You and I are so much alike. I think I can specifically point to 1995's CHEAPNESS & BEAUTY by Boy George that opened my mind to more guitar and louder mixing. Before that, I hated guitar rock with a passion. I can literally count on one hand the loud guitar tracks that I genuinely liked from my childhood (like "Fire Woman" by The Cult). Nowadays, I have a much higher tolerance for guitar rock - IF IT'S MIXED DOWN WELL. There really are no shortcuts to good production & mixing - regardless of genre. Collective Soul seem to have producers who know what they're doing, for example.

      Thank you for the comment. Great to hear from someone who also have had a change of mind when it comes to guitar rock 🙂 I am now really curious to hear the Boy George album you mentioned. Haven't heard much from his solo career since 87-88.

      @@tobiasgronvall - It's a great album. It starts with an Iggy Pop cover. Most of it is well-mixed hard rock - but there are a couple of stunning ballads (plus a syrupy one). There's only one 'pop' song on it - and it borders on country & western! Wild album.

      @@RichardTheBigBunny I have now listened to the album, a wild album is an understatement. 🙃 I would never associate Boy George with this kind of music, his voice is so smooth that I couldn't imagine him signing in this genre. But his voice works really well. I can see how this opened you up to more guitar based music. Like you said, it is a wild and well mixed album. It works really well as a gateway to explore further... Thank you for introducing me to it.

    Siouxsie & The Banshees Nocturne 1983 Live (with Robert Smith on guitar) and The Sisters Of Mercy Body And Soul 2x12" are two real treasures for every Brit 80s Goth Rock fan. Other very interesenting vinyl RSD edition is Electrafixion Burned, an Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant (Echo & The Bunnymen) 90s parallel Indie Grunge Pop musical project.

    I was very happy to get both videos on blu ray but the packaging for me wasnt great. I am not fond of digipack packaging, i always feel i am gonna scratch the discs taking them in and out, and as well it doesnt go onto the shelf well with my other discs..

      Oh THOSE digipacks. Yeah, they’re cheap, horrible and will scratch discs. I’d hoped they’d used the digipack type that some boutique Blu-Ray labels use that have a clear disc holder attached to the cardboard- they’re fine. I’ll still get it, but it’s sad to see cheap packaging.

    Nena in her native Germany and other parts of Europe had a few other hits, but as there with you, here in the US this was her only hit. Rockwell for sure wouldnt have that be a hit except for the fact Michael sang on it, but it is a good song overall. From my digging it seems Fiction Factory reunited and performed at the Belgian "W-Festival" in Ostend in 2022 and before that at Rewind festival in 2011.
