This is cool man
Did you mark the ballot with pen or #2 pencil?
You forgot to mention the plutonium in the trail dust all over Los Alamos. Check out Nuclear Watch New Mexico for the latest analysis and data. Avoid Acid Canyon, and well a lot of trails around the TA sites, keep your pets away. I know someone who got cancer after a few years there. Also, I know those who hide the cancer rates there.
America should stop adding lanes to the Interstate and start adding Interstate High Speed Rail Lines along the median/ROW... A whole network could be built quicker and cheaper than trying to build greenfield lines and still deliver reasonable speed. Same here in the Edmonton-Calgary corridor which houses 4 million people in a linear city 160 miles/300 km long... There's even still space along MOST of the existing QEII freeway which eventually turns into/connects with the I-15 from Coutts/Sweetgrass all the the Inland Empire...
That's why I'm ready to leave Knoxville because the transportation, public transportation is terrible I got to wait an hour for a bus! So if you don't want to wait an hour you can walk 7 blocks maybe and then catch a bus that runs every 30 minutes you're still going to be late for all your stuff like 10 years behind maybe maybe 15 public transportation! The public transportation was so terrible in the probably late 80s and 90s and then it got a little bit better than it's worse! 25% of poverty in the city of Knoxville they have to ask for federal dollars but they want to bridge that you can walk across for 60 million dollars! South Knoxville and the University of Tennessee asking for a bridge that you a pedestrian bridge for 100 million dollars plus that you can only walk or take a bicycle they can make the transportation system better! If Knox wants to be better they got to reach out to the whole city not just the University of Tennessee and oak ridge and all the rest of the people that come from out of state and leave they have people that lived here before the coal Miner's daughter type people! Knoxville soul how to date that they only want to connect with they don't want to connect with the surrounding counties to bring revenue into Knoxville they don't want Knoxville should be the leader they should have light Transit and those other cities should be getting their bus transportationthe nine counties that touch Knoxville should be getting their transportation if it's just like shuttle type buses the whole area is far behind when it comes to transportation they like to stay at home or get in the Fords and their Chevys and pollute the air with their all that smog and all that transmission fluid in radiator fluid in the ground in the streams Knoxville's one of the most polluted air cities in in the United States because of the transportation system is like one of the worst they always talk about money for that the money for this they can get the money for UT real quick the University of Tennessee they want to be able to stadium they want to make something for baseball basketball for Pat summitt that can get the money for all that stuff but the transportation is like last in the United States when it comes to the size of the city and they don't even care
I used to get around Seattle before light rail got around because their bus system you didn't have to wait an hour to catch a bus that the buses run every 15 minutes or they're running all day plus everything is closed all the stores are closed walking it's a walkable City! Knoxville Tennessee is kind of like Mayberry Tennessee!! It's getting better every year but it's far behind it it needs to catch up! So we need to get together on this light rail! You and I will bring it here! Reach out to me about it! I went to Knoxville area transit meeting today and they said they were getting all electric buses but on the main main routes like you said on the outskirts I can get all of them and bring them all to Knoxville on the light rail trains and then around the city we can figure it out it's going to be done if it starts off with two rail cars 3 rail cars or whatever!
I’m a mechanical engineer looking for a job by Los Alamos n this helped me so much.
I'm glad it helped!
I was a Louisville resident back during the early 90s when city officials had looked into light rail tentatively ( I didn't know that it was under consideration. ). In 2016 Mayor Fisher announced a twenty year plan in which it was looked at again but rejected since the consultant that was hired did not believe that the population density was apparent. Louisville has been experiencing considerable growth since then. Now is the time for this endeavor. I think that you have done an excellent job of identifying prime spots for the infrastructure. South Louisville ( the area around Churchill Downs and the University of Louisville ) would be an excellent location to begin work on the system. Thank you for this timely and informative piece. Hopefully, elected officials are paying attention
Reach out to Joe Hultquist, CEO at Transit Alliance of East Tennessee. This is his passion also.
I'm with you.
Thanks a lot! Very well explained.
You're welcome! I hope you have a great career!
Hey man, no posts for awhile, all good?
Where's part 3/ the eastern labs? I can't find it.
I probably would have done the same as you. From the perspective of an observer, i would have screwed in the sensor, then put the grommet and plugged it in after unwinding the wires. Easy to be a Monday morning QB.
Good call! For reasons I can't explain, I have a tendency to do everything the hard way!
Good on you getting a gig at SNL. Nice Colorado cap and UNM shirt. I am From ABQ, Went to UNM and worked at Los Alamos and now in Boulder CO at CU doing research. Ya, stay away from Zuni and Louisiana in ABQ. I loved Los Alamos though. Loved the skiing and the mountain biking. Met my wife there.
Actually, integrating Interstate right-of-ways with High-Speed rail lines is an ingenious idea. All the grading is done, the real task would be to lay track along the medium. This has tremendous possibilities.
Hopefully with Brightline West, more folks will see the value in using the interstate right-of-ways.
The line needs to continue south to Columbus, Georgia
The advantage of the Maryville proposal is the rail already exists. That cuts the cost immensely....from dollars the cents to make a simple comparison. The Bearden line is a main line for NS and that simply will not happen under any circumstances for any amount of money.
Needed to see this vid! I’m currently an undergrad who wants to go into graduate school currently interviewing with/receiving offers from these places and other labs for internships. They all seem pretty cool and the decision paralysis is real.
My wife and I both received offers at LANL and we're researching places to live. We've been mainly looking at Santa Fe, like most people suggest. We're curious about Espanola, can you speak more about that? Everyone says Espanola is rough but what exactly does that mean? What can someone living in Espanola expect? How rough is it compared to ABQ or parts of Santa Fe?
First of all, congratulations to both of y'all on the job offers! Remember that everything is negotiable, and I'd recommend asking for more money before/if you decide to accept. Second of all, I've never lived in Española, so take my advice with a grain of salt. 1) Española had an opiate problem in the 90s--a whole decade and a half before it caught on in Appalachia and inner cities, so that damaged the town's reputation. As someone who now lives in ABQ, I'll tell you: the drug usage is just as bad here (in specific areas) as it is in Española, or East Knoxville, or any small town/rural area in East Tennessee/Kentucky/West Virginia. 2) Median household income is lower, which means cheaper housing, but it also means reduced/no amenities that wealthier towns have to offer (like music stores, ski shops, art galleries, ice skating rinks, public pools, wider varieties of grocery stores and restaurants, etc.) 3) Living in Española (or Los Alamos) means longer drives/bus rides to the airport (but shorter drives to Colorado and New Mexico ski hills). If you need to travel by air, the Santa Fe airport has direct flights to Denver, Phoenix, and DFW. You have a few more options out of ABQ (www.abqsunport.com/wherewefly/), but it is a 2-hour drive to get here. If y'all do decide to come out here and want a free tour guide of Santa Fe for a day, or if you just want to talk before you make the leap, add me on LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com/in/eric-nelius-3bb427a5/), and I'll give you my contact info there.
😅 "promosm"
Nice job bro! Looking good
Thank you hermana!
I would never even be on this route, but it would be nice to have the option lol
Congrats dawg. Brave to talk about it!
Thanks so much man! This is one of those things I wish I would have known earlier, so I decided to make a video about it!
Good news is the Minneapolis-Duluth corridor will soon be getting Amtrak higher speed rail service through the Northern Lights Express plan. For an expected $30-$35 ticket cost, we're getting 90mph top speed with 4 daily round trips for an expected 2 hour 30-35 minute travel time, with a few stops in between including Superior, Hinckley and Cambridge. I-35 in downtown Duluth is also set to be infilled with plans for Duluth Union Depot to improve this future NLX service. Expected total project cost is $592.3 million with $194 million already put forward by the state of Minnesota, awaiting a federal funding match. It doesn't quite follow I-35, even if some of the rail still exists between Hinckley and the St Paul corridor (tracks turn into a rail trail between Hugo and North Branch) which does parallel I-35, but regardless you'd still have the major demand generators that are shared with I-35 served by higher speed rail. There used to be a full passenger rail service called the Twin Star Rocket, which ran from Minneapolis-St Paul to Texas. Could be done nowadays as a sleeper or long distance train.
NLX will be great once it's running, and if it is successful, the argument to extend to Des Moines would become much stronger. I'm really looking forward to see how Minnesota gets it done!
Congratulations man, I would have never guessed you had a problem, I was never a drinker but a drugger, sober since 2019. You look great sound clear keep moving forward
Thank you! By all clinical definitions, I didn't have a problem before. But going from 2-5 drinks/week down to none has made a world of difference for me! Congratulations on your own sobriety!
@@ericnelius9062 luckily you caught it early
HSR Dallas to Houston and perhaps to San Antonio makes sense. Beyond Texas not at all. Distances are too far and not enough population. Maybe a faster speed train to OKC.
The Texas triangle is the HSR sweet spot, and I would love to have that as I travel between Dallas and Austin frequently. Anything longer doesn't make sense over flying.
Columbus OH should build passenger rail. It's one of the largest cities in the country without any form of rail transit at all.
Excellent proposal! As someone who lives in Knoxville, it’s unfortunate that something like this (or even more expansive) won’t happen due to the car-brained nature of most residents and the broad sense of “not in my backyard” as well. I’d love to see a similar video from you on my similar-sized hometown of Little Rock! Thanks for advocating for rail transit!
Thank you so much! I hope you're enjoying K-town and all it has to offer! I'll look into doing a video on Little Rock. I haven't been there before, but if making a video is something that people can point to and start a discussion with, then making a video is worth it!
Those rail corridors would make a good sense for regional rail connecting Lousville with Shephardsville, Shelbyville, La Grange or even further to Cincinatti and Lexington and such. That would be a separate topic, but you have to realize if you use those corridors for light rail you would make regional rail developement harder if not impossible. The light rail could be a good addition to that system going east-west across downtown on the Market street (there is even a rough study on Lousvile developement plan). There can be more, but east-west line should be a priority because the closest rail junction is so far south from the city center. Not even mentioning that it is the main vector of developent of the city.
Regarding station in Louisville, its better to build it closer to the airport, because thats where rail splits from south to east and west/north. There is a map in the video that shows it too. Unless they can manage two stations, one in the airport and one downtown.
I think it should be routed more southern, probably, like Mexico City to Guadalajara 😂 Sonewhere, where society appreciates development.
So how can one join you?
Modern light rail was killed by Koch money. They even donated to churches to empower the dimwits and half wits against rail of any type. Music City runs on state owned tracks of the TC. The nasty CSX full of oil investors of the middle east do not want any rail investment except in their countries. CSX controls all the rail lines with the mergers of the railroads over the years. Around Nastyville. . There is Biden money out there for your projects. If republicans can't stop it.
Your email was bad order, message could not be sent
Both light and intercity at any speed. The trains to Knoxville became un profitable when GM got the mail and packages they carried put on their trucks.
Join Tenn Assoc of RR Passengers.
Of course the head of the airport commission would downplay the importance of rail, it's basically his job! We really need to stop listening to biased sources for our infrastructure needs. Besides, if anything his point that the airport sees 2 million passengers per year should be a reason to *build* light rail, as you need a way to move all those people to and from your airport once they land.
High speed rail over 125 mph is not as accommodating to high gradients as is typically depicted. The CA high speed rail specifications state for down grades over 1.6% reduced speeds from typical 220 mph are required. Those reduced speeds for descending grades over 1.6% are around 125 mph. At high gradients of 3% the safe descent speed is not given. This means for non speed restricted high speed rail gradients of less than 1.6% are desired. Interstates have maximum grades of 5% for urban area Interstates and 6% for rural Interstates. I70 west of the Eisenhower tunnel in Colorado is an exception with reported grades of 75 to 8%. Following US Interstate alignments is a popular concept for non railroad people thinking about high speed rail. In China HSR makes extensive use of tunnels and bridges to provide a HSR alignment.
We definitely need more rail service all across the country. Regional high-speed rail system’s connecting major cities are a good start.
Interesting, given your accent and content, i would interested in hear your opinion on rail in the northern US. Im from Chicago which has one of the best chances of being a high speed rail hub as its already the largest rial hub in the US. Plus the midwest is most flat
In Chicago, I'd imagine it would be successful; I know that Amtrak has started running trains at 110 mph between Chicago and St. Louis. All that said, I'm working on an Interstate 35 High Speed Rail video; I'm aiming to be done sometime this week
Interesting, given your accent and content, i would interested in hear your opinion on rail in the northern US. Im from Chicago which has one of the best chances of being a high speed rail hub as its already the largest rial hub in the US. Plus the midwest is most flat
What a great idea! I think EVERY interstate should be replaced or paralleled by HSR.
Thank you so much! Seeing as this video got the most views out of any I've made so far, I'm going to keep making content that examines what rail overlayed on interstates would look like!
Nice video! I like how you talk about cities a lot of urbanists don't really mention. Because we all live in NYC, Chicago, SF, Seattle, Portland, LA.
Thank you so much! To paraphrase some dude from Alberta: "Opportunities exist where responsibility has been abdicated."
Beautiful vid! Straightforward analysis. I like how you tied it in in little frames along the way.
Thanks so much man! I had to go overseas to get some of the B roll!
I hate car-dependence.
Me too!
I do too, but the sad truth is most folks that end up watching this video (and others like it) most likely agree with us. But, the folks that really need to see this probably aren't going to watch this video. However, it's on the internet and the URL can be sent to anyone 🙂
I love your videos, I don't live in any of the cities you discuss, but am VERY familiar with Nashville. Would like to see this happen
Thank you so much! I think this light rail system could get some funding from the infrastructure act, but we'll see if it makes it on the ballot next year
Florida does not have three mountain ranges between its two major population regions -
I don't think this could possibly work with existing track, because using existing track is a huge part of what continually kills Amtrak in America. Amtrak is more popular and has more satisfied customers in the northeastern US where it owns the track, and doesn't get stuck on a siding every time there's a freight train because it's shorter than the freight train. It would suffer pathetically low ridership, because freight rail would massively slow it down and the trains would never run on schedule. You need bespoke trackage.
They need to push for privatized seating, or it won’t be enticing for people to use over cars, and not much different than planes.
I agree with you. The following pricing model seems to work pretty well abroad: the government owns and maintains the tracks, but private companies own the trains (and seats).
