Thank you so much! Recently I was reading the Letters and Poems of St. Joseph the Hesychast and was inspired by what he said about praying in darkness. There's a letter of Gerondissa Efpraxia to Fr. Panteleimon where she speaks about it. (She was very close to St. Joseph who even appeared to her on the day of his repose....she even signed her letters "Sinful Efpraxia of Joseph" as she was so devoted to him and completely obedient to him) "I pray and say the prayer, hesychia, night and day. I make my room dark and pray. I don't want to speak to anyone. I practice stillness; I collect my nous; I weep for my sins. " And elsewhere, "may your entire body be sanctified, may you realize if our sweetest Jesus comes inside your heart, so that it and your body become like fire...May you obtain these things through silence, in the dark, without any light shining. Cover your face with the cowl to say the prayer. The body is sanctified and deadened." I thought it was interesting that she even covered her face with the cowl so as to completely block out any possible light...all to help her go deeply into the prayer.

My wife's nona (godmother) had the wonderful privaledge of hosting and driving Geronda Ephraim around the state of Texas while he was scouting locations to build monasteries. One monastery was Holy Archacngels near Kendalia, Tx the other is St. Paraskevi near Washington Tx.

Hesychasm is something I have been casually studying. I am currently reading St. Gregory Palamas defense of hesychasm and St. Joseph the Hesychast. Hesychasm should be included as a topic during catechism, in my opinion. I look forward to your further lessons.

Please pray that I find my 33 knot prayer rope that I lost inside my house AGAIN… I take it off my wrist to sit and do my prayer rule, then lay it down to do work and get distracted! It’s from Mt Athos! I think God is wanting me to care more about praying the Jesus Prayer ceaselessly than about my attachment to a “special” rope! I still ask St Xenia to find it and so far she always has…🙏🏻

I was told at Lifegiving Spring that it’s best for a lay person to receive a blessing from SF to obtain a 300 knot rope…
