Fender Blues Jr amp | In-depth look into design flaws, common failures, and handwired conversion
As one who is not only a player but does work on amps as well, I wanted to give my own perspective on these popular little amps. I see and hear a lot of opinions positive and negative about these amps. I wanted to share my thoughts and findings using one that recently came in for repairs as my case in point, and I share the back story of the amp and its owner to help explain why I ended up rebuilding the amp and converting it’s circuit into a much more reliable, durable, and easily serviceable amp.

Fryette Power Station PS-100 | Stuck in BYPASS mode? No attenuation or channel switching repair

Recently my Power StationPS-100 unit went down. I accidentally left it on over night and upon discovering it still on, I checked it and discovered that it was no longer functioning properly. It powered on and passed audio from the amp to the cabinet, but the switch would not activate operate mode and so the unit would not attenuate the signal from the amp. Also, it seemed to be stuck in the war...

79’ Fender Bassman 70 amp. This is one of the those that was taken in to another tech because the client said one of the channels was not working and the tech only went after the symptoms that the client requested, but failed to inspect and or correct some obvious issues as shown. One very obvious issue I didn’t show in the video was that the client mentioned that all though the amp sounded goo...

Upon trying to remove the speaker from this Samamp combo, the machine screws through the baffle came loose and was the nut hot stuck on damaged threads. The screws were Phillips head installed from the front side of the baffle and the grill cloth installed over that, effectively making it so that the client could not remove the speaker. This is also a brief review of the Samamp V.S.C. 12 combo ...

This pedal came into my shop for repair, symptom: no sound when engaged. Upon inspection I found a burned resistor. Schematic called for 100 Ω resistor for R30. Replaced with a 1/4 metal film.

Stock VHT 6watt tube guitar amp. Not a bad amp stock, similar circuit to a Champ with mods, but with no built in reverb or effects it can be a bit meh. I used my HX Stomp pedal to try and tone shape to get closer to Princeton type tones using a bit of compression, EQ, tremolo, and verb. This patch really brings the little amp to life!

Playing an Epiphone 335 through a Fender 65’ Delixe Reverb reissue cranked to 10, treble 10 bass 1 for rippin tones. Fed through the Fryette Power Station into a Celestion Vibtage 30 Speaker to save the eardrums

I played mine at like 5 once and thought my ears were gonna bleed. Can't imagine being in the room with this thing cranked. Sounds great from my couch though!

@@dsholt once you go past 6 or 7 it doesn’t get all that much louder, just more saturated and compressed. That’s why an Alnico Gold is a great choice because it sweetens the top end frequencies that can be harsh at higher volume with other speakers

So, I currently own 3 of these guys, I wanted a second to have a small stereo rig… and then found a deal too good to pass up for a head version with a matching 1x12 cab. The beauty of this little guy is that it is handwired and fairly easy to mod or tweek. It’s loosely based on a “Champ” type circuit with mods. Although it is handwired however, for the price of these it’s no surprised that many of the components are cheap and pretty much all of the resistors in the thing are metal oxides. Great for reliability, but some feel they are a bit sterile sounding where the audio signal passes through. The other nice feature is that they come with an OT that has 4/8/16 Ω taps. As far as getting the most out of it, I’d check to see if it has the factory tubes and consider replacing or upgrading. The other nice thing is on a cathode biased amp, you can easily swap tubes. There are also mods that can be down such as putting a switch that swaps bias resistor values so you can run a 5881 or EL34 tube instead of the the 6v6. I was thinking of making a video of that mod. Next would be using an extension cab. 1x12 or 2x10 is great with low efficiency speakers. Try different speakers either way. I’ll have an Alnico in one of mine and a ceramic in the other and run them in stereo and that’s a great low volume stereo rig. I’m also going to do a video with a comparison between the stock amp and one where I upgrade and maybe swap some resistors and tone stack caps to hopefully breath some more vintage tone mojo into it. Using an eq pedal to cut some of the boxiness and sweeten up the top end goes a long way. I’d say except for the component replacement or mods, the rest are simple things you can do to get more out of a pretty decent little amp even in stock form. They are built fairly well and I can imagine them to be very reliable and not hard or expensive to do repairs.

My buddy has a 535Q and his issue is that it turns on, but when he engages it, theres no sound. Do you think this is due to a faulty switch or something else? He was trying to secure it to his pedal board and was putting pressure on it to make the velcro stick and the thinks thats what caused the issue. Any help or tips would be appreciated.

If it happened after putting pressure on it, it could be. I’ve repaired busted pedal switches… but also if it happened while connecting to a pedal board, it could be related to the power supply. Too many variable to be sure, but if you or her are confident enough to take the back off and do a visual inspection to see if there are any burned components, that might give you a better idea. Usually switches going out present symptoms before going fully dead. Either way, unless eithwr of you have at least good soldering skills, I’d try to find a local tech that won’t mind taking a look at it.
