Colors for a Tonalist Palette
Colors for a Tonalist Palette Set Box:

Inspired by the French Barbizon School of painters, the first to break with academic tradition and to paint en plein air in the early 19th century, American Tonalist painters emphasized feeling and mood in their landscape paintings. Specific time of day and season became the subject, chosen to evoke both drama and tranquility.
While close control of values is a hallmark of Tonalism, these paintings were and continue to be about color as much as about value. Color was modified, held in reserve, by complementary mixing to create neutrals and keeping edges soft to create space and atmosphere.

Naples Orange Mixtures

Our Naples Orange is an earthy pale orange that’s both natural and bright. Richly opaque, Naples Orange is fantastic for mixing; in fact it’s one of my favorite colors because it works great with almost anything else on your palette! It's also nice just tinted with our Titanium White that I'm using here. As a modern Titanate pigment, Naples Orange contains Titanium White, and can be used to lig...
Cadmium Yellow Lemon

Our pure Cadmium Yellow Lemon is richly opaque and lush in consistency. It’s indispensible for mixing true greens with any blue. But try it with our bluer natural green earths for clean and gentle mixtures. The powerful glow of our Cadmium Yellow Lemon shines right through the delicate transparency of our Italian Terra Verde Brentonico that I mix in first. Although this natural green earth is c...

Yellow Ochre

Our Yellow Ochre is a golden, translucent and warm mixing yellow earth. As an authentic natural ochre, it mixes like a bright yellow and is ideal for mixing sensitive greens with a variety of blues. But try it with our bluer grays to create amazingly soft yet colorful notes of celadon or golden greens.
Red Umber

Dark and rich natural brown earth, our Red Umber is a Burnt Umber pigment. Nearly all of the natural earth colors, whether yellow, red or brown are well suited and play important roles in creating the broad spectrum of all possible flesh tones. And Red Umber is but one of many choices for mixing deeper ones. It will tint to cool earthy pinks with our pure Titanium White, shown first at left. Bu...

French Ochre Havane is a natural burnt yellow earth resulting in a true “flesh ochre” that is both warm and delicately pink.
French Burnt Sienna

French Burnt Sienna offers a unique red brown for building flesh tones. As a coarsely ground burnt natural red earth, this imported French pigment easily creates nuanced mixtures without being overly warm, compared to other Burnt Sienna pigments. Semi-transparent and delicate in mixing, French Burnt Sienna’s soft pink undertone is revealed in luminous tints with our pure Titanium White, at left...

Why This Black?
Просмотров 8 тыс.6 лет назад
When deciding upon a black for your palette, think first how you want it to function … a color on its own? … a subtle dark to deepen a mixture? … great for mixing grays? Knowing the differences between black pigments such as Ivory Black, Mars Black or Lamp Black will help you make the best choice.

I love that about cadmium pigments, you can see the reflection of the crystals on any mixture. Some people will say this is s disadvantage but for me it's just an amazing feature

I love your oil colors. I buy them regularly. However with Vasari Indian yellow I've noticed that mine took 6 months to dry. I've used it without a medium, just out of the tube in a painting and on a color chart. And I was surprised that it took 6 months to fully dry to the touch. Any idea why? The other colors were fine. All dried in a week to 2 weeks. Except that Indian yellow.

Wow, Vasari are definitely slower dryers - it’s worth the wait IMO because of the film quality. But 6mo is another story.

Good informative video. Have been using Vasari paints for a long time. More of these videos showing what one can get when mixing colors, i.e., tones and temperature, would be very educational and useful.
