I think we Aussies list our collective voices after screaming and cheering Thorpey and the boys on. The ground shook as we all jumped for joy, too. What a Champion.
Without question my favourite olympic moment ever. I loved watching Bolt get his third 100m title and Cathy getting her 400m title, but nothing has ever been as emotion-evoking as the final leg of this race. Air guitar post-race is peak "get that up ya" Australian
As awesome as this race was, don’t the rules state that all swimmers must stay in the water until all swimmers have finished the race? Because Thorpe got out of the pool before the last bloke did. Asking purely out of curiosity because I know that’s a rule now, but don’t know if it was back then
I think at that race ian didn't bring something new to his team he just came back after being overtaken by Garry but no matter how you slice it, he's the best freestyle swimmer of all time
Gary Hall Jr. DID NOT say that they would "smash the Australian team like guitars", that was a quote taken out of context by the Australian media. The fact that so many Australians continue to hang on to this myth is indicative of a deep-seated inferiority complex.
Thorphie brought it home in the final leg, but don't forget the other three who got him the advantage to beat Gary Hall. Australia *BROKE TWO* world records in that race.
Bloody hell, never realised he was so young! I know swimmers peak early but he was doing all this in his teens and basically retired before he was 25. Also, the bloke really can't tell a story. :-/
I'm American, and I wouldn't want the streak to be broken in any other way. The Aussies getting the gold at home with Ian Thorpe bringing them home... Just awesome
Ian Thorpe was and is an out and out legend, ... a Superstar! I hope that his life now is as happy as he made our lives when we where watching him dominate in the pool. I loved watching these guys, including the likes of Kieren Perkins, Daniel Kowalski, Grant Hackett .... but my all time favorite was Michael Klim. Klimmy was a monster, a competitive beast who never left anything in the pool. Wish you all the best Michael with your current challenge mate.
Hello I just read this please do not paste my username because it will stay forever I agree Ian Thorpe is an amazing Swimmer he was nominated as a champion he is a great competitor and a nice guy.
Ian Thorpe is an amazing Swimmer I accept for who his and his sexuality he is a nice person and a great competitor I respect Ian Thorpe I love his positivity.
Yeah, I'm watching Tokyo, but I'm not ashamed to say I also came here to reminisce and marvel in awe at a massive come from behind win by one of Australia's greatest swimmers on a night that grown men cheered and cried with joy. First, we took America's Cup, then we took Aussie Gold in the Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle!
Thorpedo propelled and delivered powerful blows against The USA... Now The Terminator, Titmus, is the one unleashing Aussie fury now. If you look at the population of The US in comparison to Australia....per capita were doing much better, than some ppl actually realise. ❤️

Aussie's have had some outstanding moments in the pool at Olympics - but this one may be the best.

"im not coming, im still getting it on"
I’m watching this during the Paris 2024 Olympics.
I hope Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe will meet each other as friends.
Why didn’t he compete in Beijing 2008?
It’s my all time favourite sporting memory! Gary Hall Jr is still very gracious about the loss so good for him.
One of the greatest sporting memories of my life! Thanks Ian and the other swimmers for such a moment.
This is my favourite sporting moment ever, smashed them like guitars. Notice the Italians celebrating us win too at the end 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Apparantly Thorpe had a battery powered dildo which propelled him over the line
Wow I’m in tears listening to this riviting story -AbsolutelyAmazing focus of mind ,body&spirit

Many years on and what a moment. I was 11 or 12 and jumping in my living room with the family celebrating!

Why did he need a suit ?
THORPIE IS BETTER SWIMMER THAN PHELPS IN ALL ASPECT
Incredible talent, he was miles ahead of competition
Thorphie brought it home in the final leg, but don't forget the other three who got him the advantage to beat Gary Hall. Australia *BROKE TWO* world records in that race.
My boy! Greetings from Turkey!
LEGEND! so glad to have met him in Barcelona 2003! :D
well, i just randomly found this vid and randomly skipped to 1:35... 1:35 - 2:05 is a treat
Bloody hell, never realised he was so young! I know swimmers peak early but he was doing all this in his teens and basically retired before he was 25. Also, the bloke really can't tell a story. :-/
He retired so early
Could’ve competed in 2008 and 2012 if he kept training
I'm American, and I wouldn't want the streak to be broken in any other way. The Aussies getting the gold at home with Ian Thorpe bringing them home... Just awesome
Must have just had a toe in the water Thorpy when you hopped out of the pool :)

Notice that Thorpe is wearing a buoyancy suit.
Hello I just read this please do not paste my username because it will stay forever I agree Ian Thorpe is an amazing Swimmer he was nominated as a champion he is a great competitor and a nice guy.
I like Ian Thorpe he is an amazing Swimmer I respect his sexuality Ian Thorpe is a nice honest guy I love Ian Thorpe he is handsome.
And they got banned.
Ian Thorpe was the only Swimmer wearing buoyancy suit I am not sure why it was removed he was a champion winning medals.
Do you think Ian Thorpe is handsome?
Holy effing Christ I love our Swim team
At no point in this video did Thorpey say it was "fully sick."
Absolute legend, champion human being Thorpey
Ian Thorpe is an amazing Swimmer I accept for who his and his sexuality he is a nice person and a great competitor I respect Ian Thorpe I love his positivity.
I like Ian Thorpe he is handsome I love him.
Ian Thorpe Fans?
Do you like Ian Thorpe?
Hello I just read this Ian Thorpe is an amazing Swimmer.
The Australian legend
I remember watching him smash it at 2002 commonwealth games when I was 12. absolute beast

Per capita, not quite as good as Bermuda who have a gold medal and a population of 62,027 oioioi
And a champion became a legend
didnt he jump out of the pool before the race finished? is that allowed?
If that’s true then it’s a stupid rule
