Professor Wiegand and I have had some small disagreements over the years, but they matter not here. The ALA, and by and large the library "establishment" has been far too unaware of their own history, what actually *happened* as opposed to view seen through the rose colored glasses that rather limit their view. The written history of librarianship, pre-Wiegand, was largely celebratory and non-critical of past events. Narrowly focused, and everybody was a hero or heroine. Any librarian hoping to understand the profession needs to read some of his books that take on the rose colored myth that ALA and the professional press buy into. Listen to this interview, do some reading, and thinking. The profession will be better for it.

If you go through a public school library as an adult parent and select a book about sex that says more about you than the book. Maybe its parents we should ban from the libraries instead of books.

Thank you for this documentary and conversation. I can't believe we are where we are. My question is if one person is able to have one book removed , then logically can't one person demand a book be added to the library's shelf? But ideally we just need to let librarians do their job.

Since all the book challenges seem to be for English language books, perhaps librarians should base book budget on which language is least controversial. If 95% of book challenges are for English language books, then next year's book budget will allot only 5% of the money for books in English, and use the other 95% to buy books in other langauges the fundie christian parents don't know how to read anyway. Banning the English language is book banning taken to its illogical conclusion, and turnabout is fair play.
