Props to Eddie. Royler's flaw was he didn't take the match seriously and didn't do what most professionals do: study their opponent. This was obvious in that Royler didn't have good responses for some of Eddie's well-known techniques. To be fair, I think Royler was overall the better grappler and more of a spontaneous grappler (instead of employing a system of techniques) but a tap is a tap. And it was a good one.

@@zip-un5tz Royler pedigree in grappling was over 20 year tournament fighter being undefeated in his class for about 12 years winning hundreds of matches against the toughest world class opponents. He was past his prime when we fought Bravo, approaching 40 years old and not studied newer techniques and strategies. t was obvious here. I mean, he should've at least known how to counter Eddie's go to strategies like the arm overhook, which steered him to doom. Plus he was a feather weight. As someone who has trained briefly with both fighters and around that time period,I cann say without hesistation Royler was a much more "natural" grappler hving refined movements and on-the-fly responses honed through hundreds of matches. . Eddie is also excellent and had techniques and strategies unfamiliar to Royler. Eddie is more of a systems guy and it showed, as that is what he used to win. Perhaps arrogance and underestimation. But it is hard to compare aging competitors against younger and cutting edge grapplers.

Almost all Gracie fighters use the same set of techniques that made their family famous. They abide by the ''old school, best school''. Both in grappling and in the cage. With the exception of Roger, who is an anomaly in terms of mindset and physical proportions. I remember an old JRE podcast with Rickson, where they were discussing Kron's then upcoming debut in MMA. Rickson maintained the opinion that Kron will just jump guard on anyone he cant take down and that will work. 10 years later, Kron jumps guard all the time against Bryce Mitchell and gets knocked out in the process. They didnt even think or trained anything new in the span of 10 years.

Keep the lockdown on until you establish upper body control, then release and finish the pass. If you rush it, you can get caught, or just lose the position you worked hard for. Also consider the twister side pass from that position (right after the sweep). You can even pin the non-lockdown leg across their body (be sure to get at least near-side underhook), and basically make them let you pass to the far-side.
