I grew up in Pasadena and went to John Muir high school from 78-82. These guys ruled during that time period. They put rock back on the map. It was a very exiting time to grow up. To watch these guys go from backyard parties to the big time was too cool. I feel sorry for kids today. Long live VAN HALEN!!!!!!!!

The group holds to its on-the-edge force, despite WS being under par on the first piece - probably playing himself sober, as he was known to do. TW keeps the band from emotional blase - ness. Stinson could have been a permanent member, by the sound of it, what with his loose, exciting pulse and open imagination and rich sound. There was a real crisis afoot then as to the Louis Armstrong approach to music, which this band still adhered to. There was a giant insult to that great approach formulating - via Kid Music takeover. Later, that takeover was trumped by corporatism's squashing of any hope for a meaningful music for flesh and blood humans, old or young.

This was the radio. Remember the radio. I taped it and played the heck out of it. I seem to remember they aired it from La when Absolutely came out. So great to hear this again. Uncle Rik, if you read, I am sure many of us world but a live recording of Absolutely although I am sure there are other challenges.

This is Live at the Spectrum in Toronto, broadcast by local radio station CFNY. The Hip were atop of the Canadian Charts with New Orleans Is Sinking and Blow At High Dough. They would dominate Canadian radio surpassing Rush, Triumph and Bryan Adams as Canada's favourite band. Just an awesome show of the Hip getting going!
