Waste Mold in Plaster of a Small Portrait Sculpture
I'm making a one-time use waste mold of a small, clay portrait sculpture. Using Puritan Pottery plaster, playing cards, tape and Murphy's oil soap, I can transform my cay sculpture into plaster in a very quick and affordable way.

Can you do the opposite? Take the scanned sculpture and use that to carve marmol?
So, you destroy your original to finish up with one copy. Hmmmm. Doesn’t sound very practical. I will check to see your sculpting skills, because the actual bust is lovely.
Belleza de escultura 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
When using cards as a wall around the sculpture isn't the final piece that much smaller since the card thickness takes up space between the front and back half? Why not remove the cards after the front is poured so the back makes contact with the front thus creating an exact registration. You can always go back and fill the seam created by the card shim?
HI, lovely piece! Is there any reason why you don't also make the silicone a 2-part mould? Thanks. Rob
Nothing simple about this demo
I want to start making castable sculptures, but I just don't have the patience for this, so not sure what I'm going to do. Paying someone to do it is really my only option.
thanks for the tutorial, excellent sculpture.
I really would love to see you make more videos. Experienced sculptors like you are prized more than the formulaic fluff that's seen as the norm on RUclips.
👍
спасибо, мастер! все подробно и доступно
Great and informative video ... excellent presentation too. Thanks for posting.
No entiendo porqué no pone desmoldante para evitar cargarse la escultura de barro.🙄
Thank you for this video, to reinforce the plaster is it better to use hemp or fiberglass?
What are the silicon brands you are using?
Good working! Thank you!
Nice work. Your sculpture looks very similar to a piece I made years ago of a zombie being shot in the head.
So much great information in this video, and I like your direct style. I'd like to ask why you don't add any mold release material to the clay. Seems that might make it easier, but then again, maybe the plaster wouldn't stick well. Thank you
How thin are the metal shims?
Nice work sir
Thank you
Work fantastc
Will plaster of paris have a similar result/process?
Hi! We have the same scanner here at work, but seem to run into trouble with smaller clay object. Any tips on what might work to scan those? One of the examples that we're stuck on is a clay birds head (to give an idea of the size).
Hi Amy- what kind of trouble are you having? When I scan small clay sculpts, I always use the fixed scan mode with the scanner on a tripod. If you have the turntable, it makes it easier. You can email me if you want to send pictures of what you’re getting. Dana@bluegenieartbazaar.com
Beautifully done and an excellent bust. It's nice to finally put a face and voice to your name. I've pored over your work many times over the years and it has helped add to my own sculpting. You have a new subscriber from Ireland. 👍
Hey, thanks! Honored I can provide some inspiration.
so do you print them on like a 3d printer or something? I'm curious the detail that the Einscan can get.
Hi Andrew- Yes, I do resin prints as well as CNC machining with my scan data. The detail is quite good. You can check out my Instagram to see my output.
@@danayounger_sculptor1816 Thank you for the response! that is awesome! I've been debating getting a 3d scanner for a while now and have had my eye on the Einscan line, but I haven't found too many real world examples geared toward scanning fine art. Your Instagram is awesome!!
very useful video. thank u
This is brilliant! Thank you!
Do you have any experience making multi part plaster piece moulds like what was done in the renaissance? They would make small pieces that locked in to one another. I'm interested in trying it.
Heck yeah. I did this in grad school with the Arco Spyder
Anyone who name drops Malvina Hoffman is my people. Bravo!
Hey Dana, I’m new to your channel and I am really happy to have found you. I am a new sculptor and could use help in many ways. Thanks so much for your input and your insights. Warm regards from Canada.
Happy to help! Good luck with your pursuit.
Thank you, Dana. I never had a success working with plaster, Plaster of Paris, on vertical surfaces. It always drips down unless it is almost set, and then it's hard to move. What kind of plaster do you use on vertical surfaces? thank you!
i color the first send the lost form in color as a warning before the sculpture arrives
Great work! What type of water based clay is it? :)
Awesome work man! Where can you get this exact silicone and catalysts?
Fantastic
Thank you for sharing. I don't see any mold release applied between the rubber and plaster. I am wondering if the plaster might stick to the silicone rubber? I have standard pottery plaster. Brush molds are not easy to get smooth.
Great Work!
when I get down to the color layer removal i use a wood "chisel" made from a dowel to remove it.
Great video with a clear explanation. I'm not ready yet to make a two-part mold, just doing some research now, but I will definitely come back to this video when I'm ready for it!
i guess I'm pretty randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to watch newly released tv shows online?
Best video I’ve seen so far! Straight to the point. Excellent work!
Love it
U soak mold in water 24h?
waau thanks for your meticulous explanation. I already gained some new trade secrets.
Slušný scanner
Thank you for you video , can you tell me the name of silicon you brush on statue before mother mould
Which paint do you apply on the bust
Is this plastic paste have toxic fumes like fiberglass resin does
Hey man, great tutorial!! I had a few questions - [1] is there a substitute for hemp fibre; [2] what can I use instead of murphy's oil soap and commercial (slips) because I don't have access to either; [3] My sculpture is a bit dry now (3-5) days old, is it possible to use your procedure now, and do I have to use a special type of plaster or will the usual plaster of pairs do??? Looking forward to your response A newbie sculptor☻
Can the slip that you used earlier, be used as seperater instead of oil and soap?
