    Recently there has been a number of revisionist histories of the Alamo. None of them diminish the heroism of the defenders. These were generally not professional soldiers that did the best the could under the circumstances.

    We were at the Alamo on a bus tour in 1998. Marty Robbins has the definitive song of the Alamo for my musical taste. We loved San Antonio, and so many of the other places we were taken to in the American South West. Barry from Canada..

    As a Texan from San Antonio, whenever we went home on leave, I would take my wife and kids to visit the Alamo. I visited the movie set as a young boy as my Father knew Happy Shahan. Before the set was closed I took my wife and all five of our kids to visit the set outside of Brackettville, TX. I felt it was important that they have an appreciation of just how difficult it was for the Texicans to defend the Alamo mission with only 187 men against about 5,000 Mexican soldiers under Santa Anna! AND just how much we owe those brave men!

    Freedom my ass. I have yet to see a movie about the Alamo that didn't mention anything about one of the reasons why "Texans" wanted to be free of Mexico. Mexico had no slavery. White Texans wanted slavery...those that could afford slaves,anyway.💀

  • @andresmora5192

    The truth why the Mexican 🇲🇽 province of Texas was balkanized by US-American immigrants, was because the Mexican central government of General Santa Anna declared slavery illegal in Texas. (Santa Anna abhorred slavery, also the father of the country of Mexico, had abolished slavery since 1810). In addition, the Mexican law ordered to punish all those pioneers who did not free their slaves. This did not sit well with the US-American immigrants who wanted to keep slavery legal in Texas. That's why the Texas Civil War started. The Mexican soldiers who defended the territorial integrity of Mexico in the battle of the Alamo are actually the good guys in a story manipulated by official historiography. GLORY TO MEXICAN 🇲🇽 TEXAS

    What a way to end a movie, Two great lines (everything else is visual). "Where's Daddie, Mommie? followed several moments later by "Attention" in Spainish. You see the John Ford influence here, do not do something verbally, when you can do it visually.

    I am not an American and have no idea what the area was like, what strategic value a little Fort on the Rio Grande could have, so please forgive my ignorance but how did those in the Alamo hold up Santa Anna for 13 days??? Why did Santa Anna have to go through the Fort? They were in one Fort, why didn't he just go down the river aways and cross somewhere else? surely there were other places he could have crossed at He could've then went and beaten Sam Houston before he was ready and then attack the Alamo on the way back?, it just seemed like a stupid tactic on the Part of Santa Anna, Of course I may be way off the mark, Santa Anna would have known the terrain can anyone tell me why he wasted 13 days on such a small group of men when he could have left them sitting there like a shag on a rock, I mean what would the stories be if Santa Anna was a little smarter? it doesn't lessen the sacrifice of those brave men that fought and died for their cause, it is a very emotional movie because it was real, it really happened I do not mean to offend anyone, it is something I have always wondered about

      They held 13 days as Santa Anna lacked siege guns, he became impatient and ordered an infantry assault. Santa Anna went there on purpose to avenge the defeat his brother-in-law general Cos had suffered at Bexar (where the Alamo is), he also hoped if he attacked there it would lure Houston and Texans on to him, instead they retreated and lured him on until he was whipped at San Jacinto

      @@martyrobbins5241 Thank you, I understand why he did it a little better....but it still seems strategically a stupid move....but then again I have the benefit of Hindsight that he didn't have, I know that eventually he lost But from what I have learned (from movies) those at the Alamo went to the Alamo specifically to slow down Santa Anna for as long as possible, how did they know he wouldn't just go around them? Why didn't they just join up win Sam Houston like every other Texan did?? It seems they knew exactly what Santa Anna was thinking Custer was Stupid to Chase the Indians at the Little Big Horn too.....every loser in a Battle would wish they had taken a different tack I suppose, Thanks for your input, I know why he did it now, it helps to understand the psychology behind the decisions

    • @martyrobbins5241
      @martyrobbins5241 7 месяцев назад

      @@georgemoore7186 Films often say the men at the Alamo knew they were buying time etc and trying to slow Santa Anna, that isn't true. It had about 100 men there just as a garrison as any fort would have, Houston sent Bowie with 30 men to destroy the Alamo and remove the cannon as he knew a siege would be useless (militarily) for the Texian cause. Bowie instead opted to defend the Alamo, as did Travis when he arrived. The Alamo defenders were surprised by how quickly Santa Anna arrived, they planned on having much more time to rally men and supplies. The Texian high command, namely Houston, were opposed to tying men down in sieges when they needed every soldier available to try and match the Mexican army

    • @georgemoore7186

    The reasons as to why the conflict started are questionable. Americans were allowed to settle in Texas on the proviso they did not have slaves. That was ignored as were other restrictions on settlement. And yes, I know that was before Santa Anna came to power.

    • @marksprague1280
      @marksprague1280 6 месяцев назад

      There is no question as to what started the conflict. The area that became Texas was part of a Mexico-wide revolt against the tyrant Santa Ana after he overthrew the legitimate Mexican government. Santa Ana crushed the rebellion everywhere but Texas and would have crushed the Texans as well, had he not been stupid enough to get trapped on the wrong side of a flooded river with a smaller portion of his army, facing the entire force of Texans.

    "March 6, 1836. After 13 days of brutal fighting, the valiant defenders of the Alamo were slain almost to a man. Out of 215, only 31 survived the battle, most of them the wives and children of the defenders who were released to relay news of the battle in the hopes of discouraging further Texian resistance. These hopes were quickly dashed, however, as news of the valiant but doomed defense had made the defenders martyrs and the Alamo a rallying cry. Santa Anna had lost nearly six hundred men in the fighting but was determined to crush the uprising regardless of his casualties. Sadly, all his hopes for victory were dashed just a month later at the Battle of San Jacinto where his army was destroyed in just eighteen minutes of fighting and he was taken prisoner. General Sam Houston, despite the desire of his men to execute Santa Anna, gave him an offer: His life for Texian independence. The offer was quickly accepted and the Republic of Texas was established. Ten years later, Texas was annexed by the United States and became the 28th state of the Union. As for the Alamo, it was restored after years of neglect and became a popular historical site and tourist attraction, becoming a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1960, added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. While the stories of those who fought and died have been embellished and exaggerated, no one could deny that for 13 days, men from all walks of life came together and fought an impossible battle for what they believed was right. And when death came for them, they faced it with exceptional courage, ensuring their places in history and that the words "Remember the Alamo" would never be forgotten."
