I used some of these concepts to run a marathon without a background in running. In fact, I previously hated running. I came across a hack, run ridiculously slowly. Found out I love distance running if I run really slowly. Then I wondered, what if I ran a marathon? I found one and a training plan. 18 weeks later I finished a marathon. Excellent video!

There was no way to this in my high school Because they made high school credits and college credits different collage credits couldn’t go to high school credits so you are forced to attend all 4 years in order to get the required high school credits to graduate on top of community service and fund raising-( if you wanted to go on any felid trip you had to fund raise)

I also did dual enrollment and graduated HS with my associate level degree. The dual enrollment program did work for one of my friends to get their art degree two years faster and one of my friends got a business degree very quickly as well! In my college I had to take courses in a certain order for my biochemistry degree (genchem1 then two then ochem1 then two then biochemical principles, then pchem. ended up spanning almost a full four years with no consecutive offerings) and so I couldn't actually graduate in two years like I had wanted. I used the extra credits to take a semester abroad and a double major with art, but I will have to spend all four years at college. Be sure to check with your degree plans to make sure you are meeting preprofessional requirements as well! I could have gotten a biochem degree from another university in three years, but that plan did not meet pharmacy school prerequisites. Awesome job and I'm glad you could beat the system!

As a homeschooling parent, this is encouraging to hear. We are all about self-study in the upper years. We are in KY, so things might be a bit different. Definitely thinking about dual enrollment, but that costs money.

The standardized, consistently-preached education system is broken, and has failed me thoroughly. Which is not to say that my learning disabilities, physiological deficiencies, and general lethargy would not have played a massive role in my overall failure as a student, but... shoot, yeah. The system was not designed to help people who aren't capable of already excelling, and helping themselves "play the game". Regardless, I am angry, disappointed, and immediately exhausted at the inevitability of the system failing my own children. I, too, support the idea that school (in general) should be self-paced, rather than standardized/held to a strict schedule and deadline. Some people should be able to go faster, some should be allowed to go slower. So many more people would be much better educated, less dejected, more empowered... the world would just be a better place for it. And, yes, classes/education is very inefficient, in terms of what is said and done in a classroom. It's too late for me, but I'm looking forward to a future where nobody has to commute to a classroom, where AI can determine the best path for you, based on your wants and needs, at ever junction/in every moment, where learning is not boring, and where people accomplish great things well before they start to feel like it's too late. Good luck, everybody who is still in the system/on the path/looking for hope. It's right here.

One of my classmates in HS (a long time ago) did something sort of similar. She took a lot of college classes WHILE in HS. Mostly from the community college. There were a lot of "free" classes for underprivileged kids back then. It was rather brilliant. Kudos to you for your ingenuity.

  • @rychei5393

Yep, the cookie cutter system isn't for everyone; we need to facilitate these ambitious kids. Note of caution "skipping a grade" could force you to graduate early and make you loose a year of Concurrent enrollment options. Advance, but they CAN'T make you grade skip, OR with hold valuable classes out of reach on another campus. (Our state loves to shove 9th grader is junior high and away from important high school offerings.)

I grew up in Minnesota and took a fairly similar approach of PSEO + ensuring that my credits would transfer to my selected University. Unfortunately for me I did not know about the testing programs, but instead I took a TON of online classes through Tech college's, which I could stack easily, as you basically just read material on your own time and most of the non-test-points were from discussion boards. My mother kept telling me that I should transfer to homeschooling in high school, but did not fully explain why. I think this would solve the learning efficiency problem as with homeschooling you can skip the in-person high school classes, get into PSEO sooner, and dedicate more time to studying the material you need to to take whatever tests. Great job on a well organized explanation of your approach and thank you for sharing this "hack" with others! As far as school debt goes: I worked for an electronics factory in the city I went to university in as they offered 5k tuition reimbursement each year for any program related to a job at the factory. I worked three 12-hour shifts (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) and got paid for 40 hours as a shift differential and was able to pay the rest of the tuition out-of-pocket from the job. This did mean that I had basically no social life for the time I was in University, however it was completely worth it!

I’m so glad someone’s talking about this! I graduated from university only nine months after I graduated high school because I did a lot of the things you mentioned in your video, with a few differences. I went to school in Washington State, and the PSEO thing that you mentioned is called Running Start, and how it works there is that you can take college classes at your local college and have them count for both high school and college credits as long as they count (for example, I took Intro to Economics to satisfy the basic requirement for both high school and college, killing two birds with one stone). My state also had a deal where you could take as many as 15 credits per quarter FOR FREE, regardless of whether they matched your diploma or not, so I basically knocked off all my high school requirements in my junior year and then stayed enrolled at my high school to continue getting the free classes. I also usually took an extra class or two each term, so I earned around 16-18 credits every term instead. Combine this with doing a combination of AP courses in sophomore year, CLEP courses every summer starting in 8th grade, and 1 summer term, and I was able to take off a whole extra year of college. And because I had done extra courses every term I was able to graduate after being in college for only 2 and 2/3 years. Now I’m in my master’s degree, which I should graduate with when I’m 21! I could have done it sooner, but there was a lot of life stuff that got in the way of an ideal plan. What I think a lot of people don’t understand is that the system fights you the whole way you try to do this. It was really hard to get my high school to just let me do what I knew was correct, and thankfully I have a wonderful mom who knows the college system inside and out so she basically acted as a personal college advisor, but most people don’t know how to do any of this. I know I ran into a lot of people who were like “But won’t you miss the high school experience?” I certainly didn’t; I loved college so much more! It’s truly not for everyone, but for everyone who’s willing to give it a chance, it’s incredibly helpful and can get you way farther ahead in life than you might expect!

Hey, I did pretty much the same thing, but for different reasons. I was bored in H.S. but I had to be there, so I just took the hardest classes I could and did lots of clubs and sports. Graduated H.S. with over three years of college done. I ended up getting a full ride scholarship to College, so I took random college classes for a couple years, still graduated a year early, but could have had 4 bachelors degrees if I cared about that. Also could have done a Master's, but I didn't because many of the classes used the same textbooks as the undergraduate classes I already took. I just took classes that sounded interesting until I just didn't want to take classes anymore, then got a diploma :)
