B6Mix Follow Up
This video shows more details on how the MPC Live using the BiG SiX mix was created. There is more focus on metering and how to get a better picture of the metering on the MPC when mixing down.
The mix for my previous MPC Live and BiG SiX resulted in completely burnt and clipping audio. This video shows how I made the uploaded track. The uploaded track can be found by searching the SSL BiG SiX thread on Gearspace. I'm a nobody and RUclips won't let me post urls yet without providing ridiculous information.

Still waiting for the perfect female vocals for the song (i.e. not mine). The vocals on the verses were recorded on my laptop outside - you can actually hear birds chirping in the background.

    I have an X and I'm using a MOTU M4. I'm very happy with it but this Big Six is amazing. I'm GASSING. Btw, you're going to have a hard time if you mix your song all in MPC Live. Even the software is confusing. I record(sample) to X but drag and drop audio to DAW once I have the sections . I don't even arrange in X. I tried it and I think I like building sections in X but arrange and mix the audio to my Harrison Mixbus 32c DAW. I want that Big Six . I want all my analog synths go thru that BIg Six preamps. The preamps is the ❤. Btw, MPC live/X/One, making tunes in that thing really satisfying. Those pads , I feel a vibe. I do t even care what key I'm on. With MPC, I get to listen more and follow my musical instincts. Today I'm finishing mixing my tune. When I start on MPC, I know I'll finish the song. I don't even play the keyboard anymore. I make simple Melodies on those pads.

    This video is incorrect. The big six analog path "clips" when you hit the red meters. The digital path is calibrated so that 21dB == unity. Please refer to the manual to gain a better understanding of the big six.

    • @brandonlewis5444
      @brandonlewis5444 Год назад

      Do you have details about how the MPC meters are calibrated? The B6 meter clearly has ample headroom but it was the MPC meter that was showing clipping when the MPC registered “above 0”. When the MPC shows 0, the resulting imported track in Logic was showing 0 as well. This is the part I am confused about. Let me know what you think is going on here.

    • @brandonlewis5444
      @brandonlewis5444 Год назад

      I watched it again, when the B6 master hits red, that’s when the MPC shows above zero clipping. So it’s actually pretty correlated - red on the master B6 = red on the MPC. In retrospect, that’s not “super sketchy” at all as I said in the vid. Thanks for making me watch it again. The relevant section of the B6 manual is: Appendix B ADC and DAC Converter Alignment Level 0 dBFS +24 dBu When the B6 meter touches red at +24dbu, the ADC hits Full Scale, and the MPC sees 0dbFS.

    • @CharlesPantoga
      @CharlesPantoga Год назад

      @@brandonlewis5444 Well I was partly wrong and you were partly wrong. The big six mix bus does not clip at 24dB. The big six mix bus has 27dB of headroom. The mix bus clips at 27dB, the channel line amps clip at 27dB, the channel EQs clip at 27dB, the channel compressors clip at 26dB, the mic amp clips at 27dB, the stereo line ins have 27.5 dB of headroom before clipping, etc. Only the ADCs clip at 24dB. So I was correct that there is about 3dB difference in headroom between the analog paths of the mixer and the converters.

    • @CharlesPantoga
      @CharlesPantoga Год назад

      @@brandonlewis5444 Regardless... you should NOT be coming into your converters that hot. You generally want at LEAST 6dB of headroom for mastering. You will start getting harmonic distortion as you hit the yellow meters which becomes noticable i n the last 3dB of headroom especially since transient peaks can easily clip. I try to keep the peaks of my mix at 15dB which leaves plenty of headroom for mastering. When mastering I come out of the big six at about 21dB and software limiters to bring the overall volume up once I've printed through my hardware inserts

    • @CharlesPantoga

      Of course, the pops and clicks are caused by the MPC not having a selectable buffer rate. I've owned the big six for over a year and I never get pops and clicks with my MPC. You should lower all the channel faders on the SSL mixer. The master fader should be set to 0 db. Start playback of your MPCs then gradually raise the channel faders...and mix as you desire. Only then record the sum of all your channels into an MPC audio track. I used the Tascam Model 12 with my MPC Live in standalone. I have recently ordered the very SSL mixer (as well as the MPC Key 61) in your video. I will be posting videos about my workflow in the coming weeks.

      Not sure I understand why you say this. Both the individual channels and the master bus of the B6 had plenty of headroom. Can you explain why it matters? If I hit the same overall level how does it matter if it’s achieved with the master fader at zero or not?

    • @billbillbeats
      @billbillbeats Год назад

      @@brandonlewis5444 It matters because of the board's ADCs and DACs. On pretty much every converter (except for the converters that are designed to be driven like Burl etc or converters that incidentally sound good driven like the S950 etc), you ideally want to leave around 12-18dB of headroom for the most true to the source sound. Your channels are coming in just under peaking; that's way too hot. With that in mind, my recommendation would be to turn the programs down in the MPC. With the channel fader at zero, channel levels should be hitting the meter around +6 for sustained sounds and around +12 for drums. Then you have your 12-18 dB of headroom on the channels and you should end up with at least 6-9dB headroom on the master before you even touch the fader. Now if you want to juice the levels for some flavor, then do that in the analog domain where it sounds good. Push the channel faders, crank EQs, add compression, etc, and then pull back on the master fader before it hits the ADC to get a good level going back into the MPC for bouncedown.

I've never had an issue recording multiple tracks while simultaneously outputting audio to other tracks. It's kinda stupid to multi-record on the MPC though since the MPC audio tracks are so weak. I prefer to first record my midi into the MPC and then use the sampler to record any audio output from my keyboards. You could use audio tracks as well but make sure your MPC is not truncating the sample when the sequence ends. Actually, the MPC did reflect the correct MIDI CC when it was automated from the Virus hardware (first video). #40 is the Virus's Filter 1 Cutoff which is what I was tweaking. The MPC does not know to put the text "Filter 1 Cutoff" on the screen, but MIDI CC #40 is the right MIDI CC.

      It does. I can see two MIDI CC channels that have been independently recorded in Controller Mode. On Standalone Mode, you can only see and adjust Velocity. I don't see why they couldn't add the MIDI CC values in standalone to the automation lanes. That would be cool if they did. Even in Controller Mode you can only view one automation lane at a time, so no real issues with doing the same in standalone.

      I've checked the virus patch I was using and rerouted the MIDI out to my MOTU MIDI box. Using Midi Monitor, I can confirm only CC is being sent and its the Balance (fine) CC (CC #40 I believe). Of some note, I've sent Prophet-6 NRPN messages to the MPC Touch and software v1.9.6 and it did not cause any issues and I confirmed with MIDI Monitor that they were NRPNs. Good suggestion, but I don't think that's part of the problem here.

Single vs Multi is not a factor in this test. That is a good tip. Doing that DOES change the behavior, however, I've already detected a bug with that too. Setting the Q-Link to "not touch sensitive" and relative, I can corrupt the MIDI CC data by simply touching and releasing the touch of the Q-Link (not turning, just touching).

      I'm not really stoked about the defaults for the MIDI program's Q-Links being the opposite of what I'd want. If I have to actually use these controllers, it's like a little chore to go into MIDI Control and undo the defaults. Who in the world wants "Breathe on it and it gets nuked!" as the default setting? :-) I think the defaults of Touch sensitivity ON and Absolute are probably only good for sending MIDI Notes when touching the Q-Links. Also if you put them in Touch/Absolute mode, as soon as you touch it, it goes to zero. No matter what you set the min/max CC values to, the very first time you enter Program Edit for these, the very first time you touch a Q Link who has Touch enabled, the value goes to zero - even if your min/max settings are 127/127. It's repeatable, just switch to another screen, then back to Program Edit, touch the Q-Link and the value goes to zero. Useless defaults if you ask me. I'm sending them a bug report on this.
