This is the channel for the Woodturners of Alachua County Demo videos from each months meetings. We are an AAW Chapter club and our mission is to promote Woodturing in the Gainesville and surrounding area. The club meets once a month and conducts Sawdust sessions to facilitate learner by our members. check out our Facebook and website.

Woodturners of Alachua County Monthly Meeting Demo Jan 22, 2025 "offset turning Sandhill Crane"
This month demo is by Don Penny fellow club member. He shows us how to make a Paul Howard style offset chuck and how to turn a Sandhill Crane on it. This is a very simple and easy to turn, once you get the concept. It is only a 2 axes turn. Move the blank off to one side our the other and turn the head and neck. Return it to center and turn the body, legs and base. Drill a hole and put a nose on it and there you go. Of course you can decorated it any way U want.

Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair Woodturning Contest results 2024

This is the results of the woodturning contest at the GJAF. We had quite a few submittals this year. Don Penny organized the event as he has in the past. Our judges this year were Jack Roberts, President of the WAC club in Gainesville and Bob Hunt, past President of the NEFWTA. Congratulations to all the winners!

Jack Roberts is our Club President and is an accomplished turner, teacher and demonstrator. This month Jack demonstrated how to make a jewelry style box. Tracey Lee is a woodturner who has been turning for just a few years. She has gotten into texturing with the NSK and other power carving tools. Mahogany Platter Bill Leigher, a club member, took a class with Glen Lucus world renowned wood turner. He learned some techniques that he will be sharing with us tonight. He has a piece of mahogany already rounded and mounted to a face plate on the side that will eventually be the top. I might add this is Bills first demonstration. Jason Meneely , Jason is a member of the club and an accomplished turner who has won several awards. He developed this style of turning that I have never seen before. He uses forsner bits to create a hole pattern in a vase or bowl and then hollows it out thin. Require a smooth inside with that many opens. Looks simple and is if you follow his advice and sequence.

Harold Mills a member of our club shows you the basics for making a Femisphere at our monthly meeting. The form of the Femisphere is reminiscent of that of a Sphericon but without straight lines. My shop contains lots of wood from the past 20 years that needs a home. I attended wood working meetings with Don Geiger who taught me a lot. But I don't use the lathe anymore, and have a lot of wood that needs a home. Certainly, there must be a way to do this. -- North Central Florida, near Brooker.
