Agfa Clack Pinhole Camera Conversion - Follow-up
Просмотров 7977 лет назад
This is a follow-up video to my Agfa Clack Pinhole Camera Conversion video. I had some questions about the tools I use to shape the plastic clipboard pieces into the pinhole housing. I thought a short video would be better than a few pictures so here it is. If you haven't seen the first video, this one won't make much sense so you might want to watch that one first... ruclips.net/video/p55D87MW...
Agfa Clack Pinhole Camera Conversion
Просмотров 8 тыс.7 лет назад
After repeated requests, I've decided to make my first "how to" video. This is how I convert an Agfa Clack to a pinhole camera. The focal length is about 65mm with a 0.3mm pinhole so I'm looking at an f/stop of ca. f/216. If you have any questions please comment below and I will do my best to answer them. If you want to see some images taken with one of these cameras, look me up on Flickr... ca...

Olympus [mju:]-II AKA Stylus Epic - Light Leaks

I recently purchased my first Olympus [mju:]-II AKA Stylus Epic. For years, I've heard how great these little cameras are so I finally decided to add one to the collection. Unfortunately, mine suffers from light leaks. After searching the internet for a solution, I've found this is not an uncommon problem and there doesn't seem to be a known fix. This video shows a few examples of what I'm expe...

Bisping knockout reaction - COMMENTS HAVE NOW BEEN CLOSED!
Looks like a recurrent flaw in this machine. Eaven if some times i like the leak. Does not look so bad at all...but i honestly would like it away. But seems hard to fix...
Do you still make these? I know it's not going to be Zeiss sharp, but do you get keeper images? I'd love to try a pinhole camera but am having difficulty choosing a camera and not wanting to spend a ton on something I may regret.
I bought one with non function light meter but it still take good pictures :)
And, BTW, very well done conversion and very well done video!
Thank you!
I may have missed it, but what is the focal length of your conversion?
I may not have mentioned it in the video. It’s been quite some time since I’ve shot with one of these and even longer since I’ve made a new one. It’s 75mm focal length with a .3mm pinhole making it f/250. I hope that helps. My two favorite pinhole conversions are this Agfa Clack conversion and my Holgamods Holga Slide Pinhole.
This is a old video but thought I might comment in case someone runs across this and is looking to resolve this issue. The issue in this case is not likely the selenium cell. The selenium cell could still be bad but that's not what is causing the functionality issue that is demonstrated. If the selenium cell is broken but all other parts of the camera are working then the behavior would be red flag and shutter lockout because the needle would always be in the not enough light area. A second test to check the selenium cell would be to listen to the shutter fire with no light and then with a flashlight pointed at the cell. If the cell is working, you should be able to hear the difference between the shutter speeds at 1/40 and 1/200. So what is the issue? There is enough info in the video to glean that the mechanical works are gummed up. Most likely from dried oil. Often times it's the aperture blades are stuck together but it could be something else. You can check the aperture blades by just taking the aperture setting out of auto and see if the aperture opens when you push the shutter button. More often then not they are stuck in the F22 position. Generally, a good CLA is all that is needed to resolve this issue. A good camera repair should be able to do and if you are a DIY person there are a bunch of great disassembly videos here on youtube. It's a super cool camera and I would love to see more people out there with them.
Hi there, can you help me determine what is wrong with my EE-2? My aperture can move when I switch in between the flash mode (3.5-22) and I can still take pictures even if the lens are covered. Does this mean that my light meter is out?
@@theodoretran9839 it’s hard to say. The selenium cell is attached to a needle. You can see that needle if you take the top off. It’s only 3 screws. Use your hand to block and unlock the selenium cell and if you see the needle moving then camera just needs a clean.
Hi Graig. This is definitely an interesting project. One question. I'd like to discuss this topic. Why you just didn't remove the lens and use the lens socket to put that pinhole plate inside instead to remove the whole shutter mechanism? This will give you an opportunity to use a bulb shutter and integrated yellow filter. And maybe, I'm not sure about this, in that way you can keep the original focal length (approximately).
Thank for the comment. My first Agfa Clack conversions were done like you described but slowly evolved to the version in the video. I was happy with the results from both version but was after a more compact design where I could utilize any 52mm filters. As far as a bulb mode, I use the lens cap as my shutter which is my preferred method. That's why I like the Clack for pinhole... there are multiple ways to convert them. Thanks again for the comment.
@@DCN2010 Thank you! Your video inspires me to convert Clack and Click into pinhole cameras. :)
Facing the same problem, Thanks for this, guess I'll find another one, at least the camera looks good enough to be a souvenir +
Thank you for posting this video, I have just completed a Clack conversion following this and am astounded at how good the pictures came out.....Instead of a plastic clipboard I cut out a piece of sheet steel which I painstakingly shaped into a disc before drilling out the centre to accept the pinhole. I Epoxied this in place and got a focal length of 70mm and aperture of F/233. Thanks again
Very cool! I’d love to see some of the photos.
It's not at all useless.
This a really cool conversion video! Thanks for showing the work steps in detail. With this type of pinhole camera, does the distance between pinhole and filmplane matter with regards to image sharpness? If yes, how did you determine the optimal distance for yours? Your video inspired me to try such a conversion too, but of shutter-broken 6x9 box browny. :-)
Thanks for the comment. I never worried about the pinhole to filmplane distance but I did experiment with both a 0.30 pinhole and a 0.4 pinhole. While the 0.40 pinhole produced a perfectly acceptable image, I felt the 0.30 was slightly more to my liking. Good luck with the conversion and more importantly, have fun with the process and producing images that you enjoy!
@@DCN2010 Thanks! So, I' ll just go for it and see what I can achieve. However, to work as neatly as you did will be a challenge. Your clack conversions really look great. :-)
I once made a cheaper pinhole camera. I started with a Kodak instant camera. After taking the front off, there was a hole about 3/4 inch square. I covered it with a piece off tinfoil. I poked a hole in it with a pin or small needle. I covered it with a piece of black electric tape. The hole was so small that it took several minutes to get an exposure and had a depth of field from around a couple of inches to as far as you could see inside the house. The result was surrealistic. There were a few problems, then Kodak stopped making instant film after the lawsuit with Polaroid (there were things I did with were impossible with Polaroid pictures).
Experimenting with pinhole photography has always been one of my favorite forms a photography. Unfortunately, over the last four years I’ve had little time for this particular hobby. I LOVED shooting pinhole on peel-apart instant film and was so sad when Fujifilm discontinued it.
how do you see what frame you are on? Is there a window at the back to show the exposed frame? thanks and keep safe.
Yes, there is a red window on the back.

You could… disassemble and fix it. Not a difficult job. There are a couple of good uTube videos that show you how. Selenium meters contrary to popular belief do not go bad. Mine had the same problem. I fixed it easily.
May I know how do u fix this ?
Puedes tener suerte.
Hi I also wanna buy a MJU camera but lots of film camera photographers said that a part of MJU II are easy to cause light leaks! The light leaks only easy to appear on MJU II or all of series of MJU cameras?
Hi. Great video! May I ask how to fix the step up ring? Using glue? What kind of glue? Thx!
You got yourself a night shooter. *thumbs up
Hi Craig, I might have missed it, but where did you get the actual pinhole (the metal plate with hole), or did you laserdrill that yourself too? Thanks
Menno de Vries I get the pinholes from ‘Reality so Subtle’ who, by the way, also make GREAT pinhole cameras.
Great job explaining. Good tutorial video.
Well done. Nice review.
It is worth nothing as log as I do not see resulting pictures.
All you have to do is ask... look me up on Flickr callencoss and look for the album titled "Agfa Clack Pinhole". I think the "worth" comes down to the detailed instructions on how the conversion is done. Thanks for the comment. Let me know what you think of the photos.
What did you end up doing? Looks like mine has the same issue. And I’m unsure about loading a roll and trying it despite this🧐
I kept the camera but I have never used it. When I want to shoot half-frame I use one of my other Pens. Usually my EE-3. Without the exposure lock, shooting in ISO priority would be hit and miss. If it were me, I would choose a film with a wide exposure tolerance and shoot in aperture mode knowing my shutter speed would be ca. 1/40. I hope that helps.
Hi, you can still use your Pen-EE2 indoor or at night with a flash unit, or you find a beaten up EE2 with a working cell and install it on your camera.
Hi, I am interested in your pinhole. Are you making pinhole camera for sale. If so, can you send me a camera to Singapore with the shipping cost. I will make my payment by PayPal. Regards, Vidya
Hi, Your illustration is excellent. I am interested to buy one. Do you still produce these cameras? I live in Singapore. Can you confirm. Pl confirm
Hey Craig, curious if you were ever able to find a solution to the issue.? Was anyone able to fix this? Thank for posting this video
Have just discovered your video. Are you still converting and selling these cameras.
Mine has the same issue, image came upside down, so light leak at the camera seal at the left side beside the view finder, get another layer of light seal foam around that area, also because the camera is old so you cant close the film door tightly, thats why, fix that and tell me the result
How did you do for keeping the lens in this "out" position ?
Salocin It’s a little tricky. You have to slide the cover open and while the camera is powering on, you have to quickly take the battery out. If you do it just right, the lens will remain in the extended position. I hope that makes sense.
so the shutter fires?.... so its a functioning camera, and a broken lightmeter
The ASA setting will auto set the F stop automatically when the meter works. But if the meter fails but shutter works, you can manual set the F stop for flash photos and not use a flash, It does not look like it alters the shutter speed to sync with a flash bulb. Thus It may work, some camera would have reduced the shutter speed and you would need to re adjust the exposure. I have the older EE model.
@@danc2014 but then you shoot at 1/40
My guess is that.. When you shoot with cam, the barrel pops out for a second and pops back in to the body. There got to be some flexible membrane or rubber materials around that barrel. Over time it will wear out. You will need to disable the body and patch the flexible material or replace it. My guess is that simple black tape should do but it might be too thick.
Did someone find a solution for this problem?
I have exactly this does any one know how to repair?
Did you center the pinhole in the assembly by eye or used some other method? Cheers
I eyeballed it
Could you install a correct sized black O ring around the edge to prevent light leaks? With mine I’ve noticed this is where the leaks are coming from too
I never tried that but I imagine it might be possible to slide on an o-ring once the lens is extended. The problem you might have is the fact that the lens moves prior to the exposure being made. I actually gave up trying to find a solution and sold the camera "as is". Good luck!
Any luck? I have the same pattern of light leak as yours.
Unfortunately I was never able to fix the leak. It’s too bad because I really liked this camera.
The Pen EE2 has a fixed shutter speed surely the camera will be fine using the aperture settings ?
Really good video, I want one too ! Well done, keep them coming. Let me know when you have one for sale please. Larry McCormick
Very cool and informative video. I just got a Clack for 5 bucks on ebay and I'll sure follow your tutorial to convert it to take pinhole photographs. Thanks, man! cheers
Thank you! Did you ever do the conversion? How did the images come out?
hey... a while ago I bought a cheap Pen ee. but didnt fire, so I opened it up and noticed that the needle for the lightmeter became stuck in time. now it's working like new! very happy with that! Try opening yours, you never know ;)
I've asked you more than a few questions on Flickr about this camera. Thank you for making the video. I'm seriously considering buying one if you put them on sale. Please let me know
You're welcome. It's so much easier to show the process in a video rather than explaining it in writing. If you are interested, I'll make you a deal. I said $45 plus $10 for USPS Priority but I could also ship it from here (I won't be in the States for a few weeks still). Here's my offer... Instead of $55, make it $65 and I'll include an ever-ready case and a surprise roll of film. If that peaks your interest, send me a message and we'll work out the details (Address, Paypal, etc.). Oh, and you can choose which one you want.
I don't know how send you a private message here so if it's ok, I'll contact you through Flickr.
Perfect.
The seller was very receptive to my concerns and we came to a mutual agreement.
The same here.... :/

so what about shutter issue? is there a fix to it? sometimes happen to my camera too
Sorry, I don't know if there is a fix or not. I never attempted to fix mine. I just used it knowing I would miss some shots.
Most likely to be low battery borderline ...which is why after waiting a short while after misfire it allows the battery to recover slightly enough to trip shutter...the critical stop pint is 2.2 volts so fresh batteries supply 3 volts...once that drops to 2.2volts you start to get misfiring...and if it happens soon after replacing new batteries..it could be a short around R1 on the circuit board...this is notorious for battery drain on these models...the other is the c105 which typically gives shutter actuation via self timer but not normal shutter usuage.
Yup, for all people getting here to find answers to misfiring on the xa2, check your batteries first. It’s most likely linked to that from my experience. For example, I shot a whole 36 shots film and had issues with the shutter button, and unmounting the body (which was completely unnecessary), I noticed I didn’t screw the batteries holder all the way … hope it helps
yep, having the same problem, not found the sollution yet...read some forum threads, some suggest taping over, but im'm not sure where it would be effective, someone noted there's this ring around the lens protecting the film chamber from the weather/light...that can get worn out...Have you had any luck?
Unfortunately, no. I made a makeshift lens hood out of gaffer's tape but it did not work the way I had hoped.
Hi, I have the exact same light leak between the lens and the camera body. Any luck with the possible solutions you mention above? I'm going to try covering the leak with black tape so the lens still can move forward when shooting -not sure how
That's exactly the fix I attempted. I made a makeshift lens hood out of gaffer's tape. I made it in such a way that allowed both the lens to operate and the cover to close. Unfortunately, my experiment was a failure. The leaks were different so I know I affected them in some way but I did not eliminate them. I have another idea involving a short round cylinder lined with felt that would allow the lens to extend but I'm not sure a want to bother trying again. It's too bad because I really like this camera.
Ganz großes Kino!!! Well done indeed, Craig!,
