The old guy in bed who gets a laugh pulling his pants on to go watch the fight is Francis Ford, John Ford’s older brother. He was a silent movie star near the end of his life and went out with a laugh.
I watch this through the years over and over. It’s amazing and makes me sad that today the industry cranks out so much smut and violence that I would not pay anything for. We are losing. It must be violence and smut. Even Harry Potter movies are gory violence aimed at kids?
If you read the book the fight is more one-sided as it would in real life!! John Wayne's character being a former fighter/boxer would be a winner sooner!
its a classic movie,but its funny as hell how ford was so romantic with the irish setting,its classic american cheese about how they think ireland was but it works well for this movie
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have lost count of how many times I've seen it. I have never gotten tired of it and suspect I never will. I think this and the Shootist are my favorites and his best. Just my opinion.
The story goes that John Ford delivered the movie and the "suits" told him it was too long. He was ordered to remove enough time to keep it under 2 hours, so Ford cut this last fight and ended the movie with John Wayne throwing his first punch. The execs were so enthralled in the story that they insisted the fight had to be included before release. Oh, for the day when "artists" crafted movies and executives handled the distribution and legal stuff.
The pints was only 3/4 full and barman only pulled the had pump about an inch WHERE was the continuity girl other than that great film remember seeing it on telly in 60s
I liked this movir when i was a kid, I was from Dublin so didn’t understand the nuances of country rules of dating, looking back on it in these times, its a Hollywood version of Ireland and stereotyped. Never the less I smiled through many parts of this scene now. I feel nostalgic for these innocent times of entertainment.
In a interview Keith david said that in the movie they live the fight scene took inspiration from this scene so awesome how cinema takes inspiration from cinema

Ireland herself should have been given an Academy Award. The scenery was breathtaking. As was Maureen O'Hara.
