Phrasing in West Coast Swing - How to never miss a phrase change again

The "Science" of Songs! Hoping this can help you to learn Music Structure, Phrasing & Musicality, so you can be more musical and have more fun dancing - both as leaders and followers. This video focuses on the theory. We will be releasing a video next week on how you can apply this in your dancing and how followers can save the phrase change if the leader fails to set it up. But you need to kno...

BLUES FOOTWORK Variation - West Coast Swing
Very inspiring! Thank you Rolf and Karin 😃 I hadn’t thought about flipping the hand before rotating the follower in the middle part of the move - looking forward to trying it!
Did you also do double resistance on the "wrong foot" 5-6?
Fun
Luv u Karin
12:32 - what to do if the leader doesn't do anything :)
Love the dance and the laughter too ❤️
Thank you for great explanation! 🔥
Thank you for this fantastic video!
Can you please send me me the link for part 1 , thanks
Phrasing -- what a game changer! Thanks for the great video. Does the count change if the accent note is the last note in the current ending phrase instead of the first note in the next starting phrase? I have seen songs that have both of those versions in the same song. Also this seems hards to predict but might not show that much since it only differs by one beat.
Hi! Do you have an example of such a song?
Wow 😮 I’ve been looking for a tutorial of this move for sometime. This definitely helped improve my dancing
Thank you! Very nice 🎉
Great video - do you have any examples of songs with the three different type of phrase changes?
Love this!! Thanks!!!
Great content. Karin, my wife wants to know where those shoes come from.
очень классно
I just love Karin!! She is an excellent dancer and makes it look so easy, i would do anything to meet her and Tatiana!! They are my favorites in the female groups, and the males Ben, Jordan and Pj are my favorites! I would love to watch them all dance live one time before i leave this world!
So very well explained. Thank you both
Thank you very much for this video! Going to do my homework now.
"men" wearing masks... LMAO
Toda raba
Love your videos! Thank you! Just a heads up that you added end screen cards that cover half the video so the viewers can't actually see you doing the variation.
I find it fascinating how even though the do not know the song is how they can feel the beat at the precise time with hip moves and the spins and yes even the booty pops. Pretty awesome!👍
There is a difference between knowing the song and knowing what song they will be dancing to.
@@GFSwinger1693 um okay....
just what I was looking for! thank you
Bravo ! Delightful to watch!
Me watching my “cool moves” on video: “That was so much cooler in my head!”
Thanks so much this was great! Do you have a 5-count pattern to hit the one when it is the leader's right hand connected to the follow's left hand? <3 <3 <3
She is on a role!!!! AMAZING!!!!
Great , thanks a lot
Thank you ❤
Awesome video! I was wondering, when you move your left foot a little after 0:38, that's your count 6, correct? If you guys ever get your website up and running I will absolutely subscribe. I love the way you explain things :)
Just practiced this variation yesterday and now RUclips recommended me this video. Hmm. AI is watching me! :)
I think Jordan calls this a Top Spinner
I think that's an inside turn that first turn. Just my humble opinion.
Doug Silton does this and he calls it the car wash whip.
hey some west coast swing dancing videos with music would be cool :)
Fluid motion!!

Great breakdown! ❤
They should be figure skaters
Don’t know the song freestyle choreo I cannot fathom how this works but clearly it does !
You need to release your mindset from the word choreography. When you go out on the dance floor at say a wedding and you start shaking your booty. Are you dancing to choreo or are you listening to the music and letting your body take over. That's what dancers at this level are doing. They listen to the music and let all the body isolation movements that they have worked on for years take over. They are just very well practiced at this.
SO FIREEE
🌹 👏🏻
Uhm.... the actual CRAZINESS of the reflexes required to execute this so confidently and not get dropped. They were absolutely LISTENING to eachother. Very impressive.
❤
Really helpful. Thanks!
Always so much fun to watch!
🔥💕🕊
SUPER AMAZING
Hi are you only trying to hit the 1 on the 5th phrase? Not the 3rd one?
Hi. You can definitely hit both. But the 5th should be bigger than the 3rd. I refer to the third one as the 'midphrase' and the 5th as the phrase change. As a general rule, you can hit the midphrase a little bit smaller and with less of a build up, then hold it for 1 count. So hit 1, hold 2, then continue dancing on 3etc. For the phrase change you generally want a larger buildup + you want to hold the hit at least 4 counts (closer to 8 when dancing for a crowd. It t takes a while before the crowd starts cheering and you don't want to make them stop right away..). When I say hold I mean that you should not start dancing a new pattern.
@@RolfandKarin Thanks. What do you think of the idea of having ways to lead up to the 5th 1. For example: 4 6's and a 9? 3 8's and a 9? Etc Etc? Or after you just his the 1 and then you grove for 8 and now you just have to make 25. 2 8's and a 9 or 3 sixes and a 7? (After the 8 count groove makes it 33. I'm asking this because I was going to take some lessons and practice these ideas but I am not sure if my insructor would think it's not too much math and then if its too complicated I'm spending a lot of $ but not really having a good strategy. I mean I like your approach but it leaves you vulnerable to being on the 4th 8 and having to think, OK do I need a 5,7,9 or 3? Where as if I plan into it, I know which hit I will use. And of course I am only referring to the strong hit on 33. Not 17.
I get it, and I hear you. Eventually, you'll learn to catch the phrase change, but it takes time. Dancing within set structures can be fun in the short term because you might hit some phrase changes, but it's not a sustainable way to approach dance. So, it's better to avoid learning and sticking to a specific 32-count combination. It limits the dance and partner's creativity. Plus, not all music follows a 32-count structure, so it won't work for most songs. Flexibility is key. Improvisation allows for more enjoyable and creative dances. Instead of fixed patterns, focus on practicing counting music and recognizing the last 8 counts before the phrase change while dancing. At the very least, you only need patterns for 1 count, 3 counts, 5 counts, and 7 counts. If you have 9 counts, simply do another basic step, and you're left with 3 counts before the phrase change. By the way, another approach we've used when teaching this is to just stop your pattern when the phrase change happens. So whatever you're doing, just stop and dance in place. It can be useful if you struggle with counting. Good luck!
@@RolfandKarin Thanks again. I'm in Albuuqerque NM. If you guys ever want to come out to do a workshop here I can get you right to the heads of all the swing clubs.
