Irish pubs are disappearing at an alarming rate. Since 2005, over 22% of pubs in Ireland have closed their doors, leaving many rural communities wondering what is going wrong.
I want to say a big thank you to Kevin Martin for participating in this video and sharing his extensive knowledge on Irish pub culture.

The wine industry in California and the world is in decline as well as young people are either smoking dope or drinking hard seltzer. My local grocery store has a great wine collection but it's a veritable museum because they've jacked prices up so they just collect dust. Reminds me of the wine cellar scene in the Omega Man. The wine industry is facing a reckoning with their unashamed appeal to richer people with their high priced wine.

It has been truly amazing seeing the response from everybody and I wish I could thank them all individually. I love what I do and want to continue making entertaining and thought provoking content, especially for Irish audiences. Yes, I take your point on Evan, but I wanted to use him as his expression in that moment captures a lot of what I think rish fans are feeling - a sense of deflation and disappointment. But as you noted, it also helps generate interest in the video and attract clicks. This is an unavoidable reality of being on RUclips but I will try and tread that line carefully.

Pubs are declining because of the price of alcohol, people are spending money on other things like gyms, home cinema screens etc... Where they see value for money... Most people spend their money on mortgages and rent and other bills and want value for money for the few quid they have left... I say this as a pub drinker for 25 years..... The government and alcohol providers are pricing the pub out of existence... It's unaffordable now... Personally I have a few at home these days. at €5:40 for a pint of Guinness in my rural village they can keep it... Nobody in the pub as everyone feels the same... It's only a matter of time before it closes unfortunately

Pubs and their addictive drug alcohol that they sell legally to customers is the reason behind so much health issues to do with diabetes, mental disorders, sexual violence, cancer, cardiovascular disease the list goes on. The detrimental effects of alcohol are seen in the amount of money it costs the healthcare system. No other drug causes so much hardship than alcohol. The nonsense that pubs have this romantic place in Irish culture can be seen by the level of violence and intoxication every weekend in our A&E departments putting huge stress on healthcare staff, Gardai and Ambulance crews. Who pays for all this mess? Not the pubs and drink industry because they don't care. They allow 'customers' to become so intoxicated that instead of taking a duty of responsibility they just throw them out the door for someone else to deal with what they've allowed happen to that individual. We're all told about the dangers of hard drugs like Cocaine, heroin, Speed etc but the most potent and harmful of all drugs is alcohol. Think about it - you get ready to head out to the pub early on a Saturday evening to have a 'few' drinks and by the end of that evening or early morning your 'normal' mental reasoning has been impaired like your speech and your interactions with those around you. Your physical actions like walking have been affected by visual impairness. Most if not all individuals who are drunk become violent and leads to fights which can end tragically. It's so sad to see the huge damage alcohol does to society but what's even worse is the complete imbilavance of the Alcohol industry and the government in allowing this to happen with impunity damaging so many in society both directly and indirectly. Why is it that the Tobacco companies were and are highly taxed while alcohol which causes far more medical damage is free to advertise on TV as if it was a bottle of milk! The day has long gone where people turned a blind eye to the affects of alcohol and what's needed is a completely new approach to dealing with the 'scourge' of alcoholism in Ireland today.

Beer which is mostly made of barley and water it should be cheap but due to tax tax and tax it is far too expensive now to have a few pints! Same with fish and chips moneywise no longer cheap fodder for the masses. One other factor a lot of people do not know how to behave in public anymore who wants to listen to them! Then you have the cultural invaders who do not partake in anything apart from being first in the handouts queue!

Simple shift the excise burden: +%3 to supermarket/off-licence beers, wines and spirits -%3 for pubs. Even from a health perspective… it's better that you are out and about drinking (you have to get home at some point), rather than simply passing out on the settee.

BuÍochas/Thank you for posting this topical feature. Gabh mo leithscéal/Apologies, but I'd like to start my comment with a linguistic correction. The Irish word for a traditional Hostelry 'Bruidhean' is pronounced like 'Bree-onn', not 'briddon'. Secondly, under English rule, it was policy to encourage drunkenness and dissolution by granting liquor licenses indiscriminately, to keep the masses down. Under oppressive, impoverished occupation, the public house became a source of comfort and companionship, especially with Storytelling, Poetry, Music & Dancing as communal entertainment. The 'Limerick' (original, not smutty form) evolved from friendly competition between Poets who gathered in Croom, County Limerick, in the late-1700's. Le gach dea-ghuÍ/Cheers!

In Britain too, many pubs are closing every week. A very big partof the problem is the ridiculous levels of taxation. Ever higher rates of ever more taxes to finance an ever bigger state, growing like a tumour, with more and more useless staff meddling in so many aspects of our lives that are none of the state's bloody business, but needed to brainwash and intimidate people into accepting the grim WEF's impoverishment programme.

An example really I'd like to make. I started going out drinking in 2006. And from 2006 to 2008 it was like everyone had money. I could go out Friday Saturday Sunday and still have money left over to get by during the week. It all changed with big crash and greedy government raising costs and inflation rising. It will not change. The government don't want to see rural pubs or family owned businesses succeed. It's a shadow of the country I used to know. No wonder all the young people want to emigrate to ozz. Sure the living there is costly but wages are high and it's constantly sunny.. this government will continue to take take take until we stand up and say no once and for all.

There is no deep rooted love for "football" in Ireland for many reasons , not least of which is that football was and will always be associated with our greatest nemesis, the English. Also football is motivated by money while our hurling and gaelic are motivated by pride and honour which is something money can't buy. 👍

Hey JC, this has come up in the comments before. It is my understanding that excise duty is paid on the keg. The wholesale price would be around 130 and the excise duty on top of that is around 180. Would I be correct?

@@thomasblade1 Yes, probably correct about the Excise. What grates most Publicans is that the last increase by Diageo was listed as only 6c per pint. End of the day Revenue don't care what you sell a pint for once they get their cut but they look at Gross Turnover and Margin on the turnover. Tax Returned on Goods Purchased too low and get an Audit. And hell, if you still make a profit after everything is paid for they Tax that too!!
