Gaia neutron star candidates
This video was published along with a story on Gaia Cosmos: Did Gaia find its first neutron star?: www.cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/iow_20240528
This video shows the orbits of several binary star systems, which consist of a luminous component (identified with a star) and most probably a small dark component like a neutron star (identified with cyan point).
The orbits are shown of both the luminous component and the dark component about their mutual centre of mass.
The forecasted Gaia observations over this period of the luminous component are plotted on top of these orbits, in red dots.
These candidate neutron stars are being followed up spectroscopically to verify if they are indeed neutron stars...

    This is incredible. I never heard of the original idea that it could be done 100 years ago but it makes sense when you hear it. GAIA is the project that keeps on giving. I was so glad when I heard that there was finally going to be a follow up mission to Hipparcos. Astrometry was the Moon mission for hundreds of years because there was so much that could be learned from fundamental data. I wish that Halley could see what became of his idea that the stars moved.

    I've been arguing with some Flat Earthers who claim, "stars are local". I knew that such parallax-based range-finding to the stars based on Earth's perihelion and aphelion in its solar orbit, must be possible, and went looking and found this. THANK YOU!!!!

  • @jeffreybout
    @jeffreybout Год назад

    In the upper left corner of this plot and in the lower right you see more variation (distance wise from pluto) than in the upper right and lower left corner. Is this due the the orbit of the earth around the sun? That we are looking from different angles during an earth year? Or is this because pluto and its moons have passed a substantial part of their orbit around the sun in these 100 months? (3.4% of their orbit, but 13% of a 1/4 orbit)
