Songwriter. Also Dad of three unschooled children with a full time job and that means no time! And yet I'm here to play songs. I've been writing music since I was tiny, and am in a band called Ether City, but never done much to share my music before - I released my first single, Craters In The Sun, in mid-2021.
Most of my videos are songs, largely played on guitar, but I also talk about what I'm doing, how I'm doing it, and what's coming up. Plenty of what I write is Rock music, but there's also Pop and more besides. I'm a songwriter primarily so like to experiment and grow. Every new song is my favourite!

Playing my Rickenbacker 330. The style of playing I took from Eric Clapton's Unplugged performance of 'Signe'.
Strat Jam!

Playing my instrumental piece 'Dick Turpin' on my Classic Vibe 50s Squier Strat. I wrote this a week ago just playing around. Amp is supplied by the Cali Clean setting on the Two Notes Genome plugin, though I'm using Waves' Abbey Road Chambers for the reverbs and delays.

Plying a piece currently and intriguingly called 'Toad Rock'. On, in case it's not obvious, a Rickenbacker 330 from 1988. No amp, just preset 9 (Vox AC30) on the Two Notes Torpedo CAB M . No other pedals.

Playing my 2021 single Craters In The Sun on a Rickenbacker 330. Using my fingers. Oh, and with my new Shure SM7B mic. Bit of chorus on the guitar too, must be honest. Spiral Array by Black Country Customs. Into the Vox AC30 setting on the Two Notes Torpedo. Then some Waves/Abbey Road J37 tape magic in Pro Tools.

You're Going To Have To Steal This Heart...
It's a pedal bud not a light switch hit it with your foot lol, also hard to compare them when there's a 5 sec pause in between
what kind of strings?
I think d'Addario Phosphor Bronze 12s.
Nice guitar but clean that fingerboard!
Not really a fair comparison when your finger technique is light years ahead of your picking technique 😝
It actually took a hell of a lot longer to get the finger bit done...
Oh, interesting! Your finger style was so smooth. I’m not even a guitar player-I’m a drummer trying to teach myself bass-and I still find using a pick much more easy and natural. But I’m trying to learn both styles.
Good song by the way
I like the SG with p90s
Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if I got one at some point.
I fancy one
The 50s one may be even sweeter.
Is that an inspired by Gibson lp?
Yes, it's from the 'inspired by Gibson' range. Specifically the 60s Les Paul. Slightly more juiced-up pickups than the 50s ones; the 60s neck pickup is the one in the bridge position in the 50s one. I got it to have something with a bit more oomph.
@@jamescaseymusic it's comes up as Wendy but call me Jase
Green I believe is a Fender Deluxe, not a Twin. Red is the Twin Reverb
Now we have the Champion II, with no Chorus and Reverb, or slapback Delay.
Try this: Gain 5, Volume 4, Voice: Tweed green, Treble 8, Bass 3. Gives you a nice fat Vintage Sound
In short this amp sucks dont buy it, it is the curse of my life
Why
I cracked up, totally unexpected! 😂
I have it also lmao it’s like perfect to travel with but man did I really start to hate the sound, I bought a Boss katana 100 watt with two 12s, night and day difference 🤣🤣 the boss is an absolute monster!!
Wonderful brighting inspired and talented musical production! Splendid and luminous! Big big like!
I wish I was still in a band
It has been really rewarding doing the songs with them. More so than when I did a single in 2021, because although a couple of others were involved, it was under the banner of 'James Casey'. I find it more enjoyable as a band.
Just been looking at the vintage 335 12 string copy. ..don't like the off set body but it sounds pretty nice.... I got a vintage sg in a closing sale for £100 and that pups are really good , better than an epiphone I think. So yeah ...
The VA500? What colour? Never owned a Vintage though did buy one for someone once. The SG, as it happens.
@jamescaseymusic quite thick gloss black
@@jamescaseymusic it's actually pretty chimney and clear sounding
@WendyWalker-k4h the 335? In videos? Or have you been able to play one?
I've listened on here but I've seen one or two here and there you know....
Sounds like an orange juice ballad. Nice playing...
Thank you. It's one of my favourites for fingerstyle, not least because I'm amazed I can play it.
@jamescaseymusic poor old Edwyn can't play anymore of course....but in his prime he was the all time God of all things rhythm .
Lovely tune
Thank you, I really appreciate it. This one was a big deal for me.
@@jamescaseymusic i hope you get more views, you deserve it
😊 I get to do music and that's the number one reward. This song was my only actual official single release, back in 2021. Doing another one in December with my old band mates. That's what it's all about really.
Wow... sounds like Pretenders meets Smiths meets Lush. I like it! Keep us posted on your release!
Try that first riff with octaves.
Good idea, just tried it. Makes the move to the A a bit of a jump but sounds good. Octaves always remind me of Cherub Rock by The Smashing Pumpkins.
I've got one of those...nice guitar.
At some point I will have to get or play a Fender for frame of reference but there isn't anything I would change. I got the action lowered and I think it's actually too low, a bit buzzy, but it sounds amazing for anything other than string bends.
@@jamescaseymusic i put 0.10s on mine that helped was watching Johnny Marr yesterday. He uses 0.11s....
@@jamescaseymusic I like positions 1 2 & 4.. the others middle and bridge I've got other guitars that sound a bit sweeter.....
@WendyWalker-k4h I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the guy who had my Rickenbacker before me got it set up for 11s and that's what I have on it today. Otherwise I use 10s. I find 9s unwieldy.
@@jamescaseymusic no I don't like nines....too light... don't tune that well...don't stay in tune.....I use 0.10s cause they're the best compromise between playability and intonation....
great tone. curious what year is your 330?
1988. I know. It looks like 1878.
@@jamescaseymusic awesome, looks worn in just how a guitar should look
Another day in the park😎
Great song, and the Rickenbacker the perfect guitar for it! I bought a 330 brand new back in the 90’s but sold it a few years later, so wish I’d kept it now, such a great sound👍
is this song avail on streaming platforms?
No 😊. Working on a Christmas single with my band Ether City. Others maybe to follow...
I've also got a very bastardised 1963 Hofner Verithin.
Mine's a 2007 jetglo 330/12
I bet it sounds amazing.
@@jamescaseymusic it does sounds lovely but it's the easiest to play
like dear prudence's riff by the beatles
Might want to clean that bad boy the next time the strings are off. EPA Superfund level nut.
What amp are you running?
None. I'm straight into an amp pedal, the Two Notes Torpedo CAB M+, on preset 9 which is pretty Vox-like.
I've always used finger and not a pick. 12 strings are a bit of a challenge with just fingers though. That song you played, to me, very reminiscent of the style and sound of The Young Marble Giants track "Posed By Models" from the Test Card EP from 1980.
Yes, I see what you mean. I misread this and thought you meant the most recent song I posted, which weirdly enough also sounded a bit like it. So maybe I just do them all the time.
Questa Rickenbacker andrebbe tenuta con più cura , la vedo trascurata ...
È vero. Ma non sono il primero proprietario.
Great! Nothing like letting the strings ring out on a Ric... Nice Burgundyglo, if that's the color👍
Couldn't agree more, open strings sound so good on a Ric. And yes, Burgundyglo I think!
Beautiful tune.
Thank you very much. Happily, not too difficult to play!
AWESOME!!!
Thank you very much, I was particularly happy with the sound of the guitar, I don't feel I've done it enough justice recently.
Nice song man, I truly enjoyed it, so many transitions. Catchy hook, and this tapping solo surprised me as well.
I had COMPLETELY forgotten about the tapping, I had to watch the video to figure out what on earth you were talking about. Thank you for the kind words, it's one of my favourites of my songs as much to perform as anything.
I appreciate that it is clearly a well-loved instrument
I gave it a clean recently which brought out some scratches I didn't even know were there. There's a lesson there somewhere.
it's only work for cheap guitar to be honest😂😂
So for a cheap guitar it’s work?
david gilmour has used one of these his entire career, that's a big reason to use a dyna comp
@@Asorey_06and not just Gilmour, many other awesome guitarists used comps, like John Frusciante
That 330 has been through hell and back.
What tuning were you using?
It's Open D. D-A-D-F#-A-D.
And some video engagement love from one 360 player to another 🤝
Please do metal and play ride the lighting
Love me a Rickenbacker. Your 330 looks like it has had a decent life. What model year is it? I know that RIC produced Burgundyglo / Ruby red / Wine red models from the 1970s onwards. My guess is that yours is a mid 1970s one looking at the chips on the paintwork and the wear on that lovely fretboard. Looks beautiful just the same. And sounds great. Cheers from the Land Down Under.
I think it's 1988 judging by the serial no.
1988?! My god, man… I have a 1979, and it looks nowhere near as rough as that. 😄
Not sure if you're familiar with the song, but the first few notes sounded like the intro to "Too Much On My Mind" by the Kinks. Lovely little song
@@jckistan Yes, I see what you mean, very similar.
beautiful
Im probably just uneducated but it reminds me of dear prudence a little bit
At the very least it's a similar picking pattern. The pattern is based on, though not the same as, the one Donovan taught McCartney and Lennon in Rishikesh. Features on the White Album on songs like Blackbird, Dear Prudence and Julia.
Pickenbacker
de que año es?
